I am sourcing a engine/drivetrain for my 74 Cuda and have a 360 engine transmission from a 1984 Dodge d350. The A727 tailshaft is incorrect and I need to source the correct tailshaft and tailshaft extension housing for an ebody. I think I found an extension housing with a Chrysler cast number of 4028191. Could someone with a small block A727 confirm this is the correct tailhousing please? Thanks

Mr Cuda

Using google, I found a couple with that number for sale. (For crazy prices)
They have the console shift mount bosses, so it would be correct to use on your car.
There are only 2 long tailshaft housings, truck, with no console mount, and car,- with.
Swapping the output shaft can be tricky. The spline changed in 75.
By saying d350, are you saying short output with u joint flange?
Are there no other trans available?
I'm overloaded with them.

Thanks for your reply. This car originally came with a 360 so when I saw a local ad for engine and 727 I jumped on it. The engine is a very good donor, and I thought that it would be very easy to find and swap out the tail housing. As you pointed out with the spline changes and everything else, I have changed my focus to finding a complete 727 donor with the correct tailshaft. If anyone on this forum has one for sale I would be very interested in hearing from you.

Again, thank you for your help!

Mr Cuda

If all you need is a tailshaft housing, that is an easy swap.
I could make a deal and ship one.
Thats why I asked if it was a short shaft.
Swapping the output shaft is a full teardown.

Sorry, I missed the question about it being a short shaft. The housing length appears to be 8" so that would make it a short shaft and would require a full tear down (and spline matching) to graft in a longer output shaft and with it, the correct housin.

New to this part, like drinking from a fire hose.

Thanks very much for your help!

So Mr Cuda, thanks again. With your help and online digging it appears that my 1984 Dodge D350 donor transmission is a non-lockup (input shaft is 24 spline - not 23 spline with a machined end) also, since 1984 falls between 1976-1993 the contact angle on the output shaft spline pitch should be 37.5 degrees.

Does that sound correct to you? I have found a local transmission shop familiar with A727's and can do the overhaul and shaft/housing swap. I just need to source the correct housing and the correct output shaft.

Did you say you may have a housing you would consider selling?

further investigation, I am just going to play it safe and buy a complete reman unit with a warranty - I have lots of other items to focus on. Thanks
