Guys, what's a good price for a 1973 340 long block, never rebuilt? Thanks

70 Challenger Lover

I'd say around $500 or so.

Matt13

That cheap? It seems like all the ones I see are $1,500-$3000!

68-71's maybe, 73's not so much  :alan2cents:

:iagree: Pretty much everything about the older (68 -71) engines is better. Cylinder heads are much better, forged crank is much better, exhaust manifolds, etc...

Thanks guys. There is one for sale near me but the guy is asking $1,500 for it. Guess I'll pass.

Well, a complete 73 340 Long Block in verified ready to run condition might be worth up to $1,500.   A 70/71 340 would run $3k+, but that's not what you were asking us about!

For the money, You would be better off finding a 360 block and getting a stroker kit for it making it a 400 + c.i.

Stock bore 340 block in good shape, $1500 seems reasonable. Many 4.07 bore blocks on Ebay are asking over $1k. All you really need to care is the block. Everything else you can buy new. I do agree a 360 block is cheaper.

I'm building a 340 now. Originally out of a 69 Cuda. The guy I bought It from wanted a stroker. Couldn't believe he was will to sell his numbers matching short block for $400

I would think a complete 340 long block in running or uncut condition should bring every bit of $1500. I haven't seen one for less than 2500 around here.  $500 for a stripped block.  I guess the earlier motors are worth a little more, but if you are rebuilding it, you can make it whatever you like.  The 360s can be had for a bargain usually, and unless you let someone crawl under your car, nobody is going to know it isn't a 340.

Well, this one isn't in "ready to run" condition. Needs a rebuild but has never been worked before. Just don't know if I should hold out for a more desirable older 340. By 73 it seems they were detuned considerably.

Damn, I'd drive down to LA all day for a $400 340! Nice find!

Unless  there ts a dire  have to have a 340 build, i would consider other options.  Unless machinist is a friend , mic. the block, cleaning,  bore check, sonic test all adds up $$$ Weigh the options/ cost. stuffs not cheap anymore

I would find & build a 360 / 408 instead of overspendin on a 340 block  :iagree:
