Probably 20 years ago I bought a 1970 440 from a friend of a friend who told me the motor came out of a Charger. It was sitting on his garage floor and looked pretty much original. I got it cheap. It's an F code 440 but no HP stamp. I have since completely rebuilt and modified the motor and replaced the 383 that was in my Gran Coupe with it. Is there a way to tell what body the motor came out of?

If there is no HP stamping it most likely came out of a C body or maybe a truck.

IF there happens to be any original paint remaining on the engine, the HP would, of course, be orange, but a standard 440 would have been turquoise, I believe.

What about the VIN pad stamping? What does that tell you?

Start with the VIN and post it here.  Sometimes @6bblgt  can be a big help if you have the VIN.  The VIN will be stamped along the bottom above the oil pan.

the partial VIN stamping would point to what it was originally installed in
1970 non-HP 440 4bbl was painted "corporate blue"
1970 440hp was painted "street HEMI orange"

VIN stamped non-440HP would've been from a C-body
