Thanks Fellas...I am pretty bummed.  I was looking forward to driving the car this weekend...but what are ya gona do.

I am going to call Lunati tomorrow and see what they say about the warranty on the cam.

As far as the engine, my plan is to drain the oil and see what it looks like.

Pull the filer off and cut it apart and see what it looks like and go from there.

I tend to agree that there should not be a large amount of metal in there...but I really don't want to put it all back together just to kill the engine. I don't need any more set backs.

Keep in mid this engine has not been rebuilt in close to 20 years.

Thanks Guys.  I am feeling better about it today. I know its fixable and hopeful that there is no damage.

I spoke with Luntai today, and their tech guy said they would warranty the cam, they basically go up to a year on flat tappet cams.

I have to go through Summit but he does not expect it to be a problem.  He did say if Summit was no help give them a ring and they would help out.

Tried Summit, but was on hold for awhile and had to jump on another call.  Ill try them again tomorrow.

Still a lot of work to do, and will have to eat the cost of the gaskets and oil etc., but that should not be too bad.

Once I get the parts I will have it wrapped up pretty quickly and be on the road!!!

One question for you guys...do you think I should go with the Lunati lifters or spend the money on Crower cam savers or some EDM Lifters.

Here are some pics of the oil filter...shiny, not good or good because they are still in the filter.

Drained the oil and it did not look shiny while draining!!!

To the best of my knowledge, EDM lifters are only applicable for Solid Flat tappet lifters/cams.

Johnson Lifters makes them.
Expect to pay close to $400 for them last I checked.

Which is why I'd grab the Crower Cam Savers which are for Hydraulic cams..

Doesn't appear that it's actually a EDM design.

Each lifter has 2 opposing small flats on the outside which allows a small amount of oil to flow along the outside of the lifter housing.

As the lifter rotates this oil sprays onto the cam lobe to give the cam direct oiling rather than the "splash only" oiling the engine came with from the factory.

I am running Crane cams 1.6 iron rocker arms on my 440, and with the extra valve lift

I wanted the cam lobes to have extra oil. Also have Smith Bros hollow pushrods for direct oiling of the rocker end of the pushrod.
But note the Crane rockers have a full circle inner groove that feeds oil to the valve tip and rocker adjuster.

Jason, I think I have some Fel Pro head gaskets that I scored years ago- still in new condition- and if I can lay my hands on them, I'll give them to you to try to take some of the sting out of this. OK?

Correct, it's not an EDM lifter but it does put  good amount of oil directly at the lifter/lobe contact area.... I'm running a set in my current 383, they put allot of oil on the cam lobe....

Wouldn't that Telfon coating they put on the sides of Pistons for break in be something to use on lifter faces?

It's those first 10 seconds that matter a lot.

Looks like the filter did its job
the cams are Parkerized which helps keep the cam alive
