I understand I am glad it feels the same both ways , I have dealt with the same issues trying to get max air flow , I found the Fliter tops really help .

I have an air gap on a 340 1973 Cuda with a rallyeh hood.  I've run a Carter 600??? and Holley 750 double pumper that I used a drop down air cleaner and have plenty of room and doubt that helped you at all but that's all I got.

oh I ripped the motor mount and shovef the air cleaner stud through the hood after I got freshly painted.  That was a ton of fun

I am not sure sure about "a ton of room" LOL
you also experienced airflow problems , the hood  :-X

Air Gap fits under my stock raisin bran hood. I even use the stock orange "tennis racket" air cleaner. I've used various different carbs over the years-stock AVS, Holley mechanical and vac secondary, Street Demon and all fit even when running a 3/8" thick insulator. If you run the factory insulation pad it will rub on the corner of the snorkel. My personal experience with the Air Gap is that it gets very hot, hotter than my stock intake with a functioning crossover, but this may be due to my 11.25 to 1 compression and aluminum heads. Heat soak is an issue but the carb insulator minimizes this

I don't have any pics of it with my 870 holley but it clears even with an insulator under it.

It's sounding like the air gap intake will fit with stock cleaner...

The alum intake being the high point & heat rising it will pull a lot of heat from the heads .
evrything has a variable from tired engine mounts letting the engine sit a little low to which air cleaner is used , I guess you could possibly make it fit with a stock air cleaner depending which one is used but not with a lot of leaway , my experience has been different , it i s just too tight with the stock AC , seems to need a drop base

Motor mounts are a good point. I am not using stock mounts-they're called Dynamount or Mighty Mount(great setup by the way)- Not sure because it's been a long time since the engine build(2003). These are a copy of the stock mount but instead of all rubber they use interlocking metal tabs that are encased in rubber, very rigid.  I suppose there might be other little differences between the early cars and the 72-74's that might change the dimensions.

Mancini has motor mounts with safety bolt built in to protect...   I also ripped a standard motor mount in first six months..  since putting on Mancini 2 yrs ago no problem.

It's a tight fit but I think the hood will clear.
