Hi,

I found this carb in the trunk of my car in 1984 when I bought it. Put it away till now. Was wondering if it is possibly the original carb.

Car is 1970 Challenger 440-4, no A/C. Car was built in April 1970.

From what I found on the sites, the date of the carb is Sep 1969.

Is the carb type correct? and could it be from Sep1969?

Thanks for the help

Is your car a 4-speed or Auto. It makes a difference.

Unfortunately don't have the build sheet.

The car is a 4-speed.

Sorry guys, my website got hacked and my scott@harmsauto.com address was affected. All is well here, business as usual. My other email is bugframes@msn.com and seems to be fine. Thanks!

the correct carburetor for a 1970 440HP 4bbl 4-spd car is:

CARTER AVS 4737S (49 state) or 4739S (w/N95 CA)

the above 4617SA is #s correct for a '69 model year 440HP 4bbl 4-spd  - the "SA" indicates it is an "over-the-counter" replacement carburetor

it was probably purchased new as a replacement for your car - not all numbers were maintained in stock (superseded / available / "same as")

The carburetor in question is for a 1969 440 4 Speed HP application. The date code, J9 indicates that it is a replacement part since 1969 production had ended by then.

Thanks very much, great info !!

Would you go with this SA replacement carb ? Or try to find an AVS with a 1970 Feb or March date code for an April 1970 built car?

Is the SA replacement correct functionally and performance-wise?

As far as function goes they are just fine. However there was a design change made for the 1970 and later versions which eliminated the dash pot and added the idle stop solenoid and bowl venting so while it will work, it won't be correct or allow you to use other stock components.
