Many years ago when I put my car together. My car had a 318 / 904 combination now it has a 340/ 727 combination. I did not change the dive shaft because it fit and information was not as easy to come by . Should I get the correct drive shaft ?

The drive shaft from the 318/904 combination would not have fit the 340/727 combination. So you likely already have the correct driveshaft.
I think the difference is about 4", so unless you moved the rear end an equivalent amount to the rear, you would have never got it in there.  :alan2cents:
