I spied a Carter M4862 on Ebay needing a rebuild. I probably will see a couple at the 'Nats, but I felt like I'd better "strike while the iron's hot" as they say. A used pump for $63 plus a $24 rebuild kit is a heck of a lot cheaper than the $166 I would have to pay for a new one!

It won't be long until I have to start thinking about pushrods. I'm debating between hunting down a used set of factory mechanical pushrods, or going with Manicini's cut-to-fit set (MRE9284H). Anybody used 'em before?

My short deck height + the thick gasket I'll have to use should end up being a similar height compared to factory deck height + an .020 shim. So, I would think the factory pushrod lengths would be OK.

Junk gathered at the swap meet:

Notice anything peculiar about the block I'm using? The motor mounts were either destroyed, milled off, or both! Its the reason why the block was so cheap. The plan is to make custom plates with the proper motor mount holes that would attach to the block using the main cap cross-bolts.

Also notice the Ford blue paint and extensive milling/lightening. I like to tell people its my "Sox & Martin" block, lol.

RUNCHARGER

It broke a rod and spit it through the side of the block where the motor mount pads were. They welded in patches from a 440 block.

I like how this is going but in no way is it cheap.  I would say use an adjustable pushrod and get it right makes a big difference.  Keep on chuggin.

Thanks, I certainly agree in the context of building a wedge engine or x-brand engine, $7xxx is not cheap!

But, in the context of building a Gen II Hemi, that's half price to a third of the price of a build in 2019.

My brother has a pushrod measuring kit, I'm sure he'd let me use it if I go with the Mancini cut-to-fit set.

Parts Bought at the Nat's this year:

Crank Pulley-------------$10
Crank Pulley Bolts------$Free
Timing Cover Bolts-----$5
Water Pump Bolt Set--$25  :( (don't ask)
Misc Gasket Sets-------$75

A fellow was selling a pile of Gen II Hemi gaskets which turned out to be about 2+full gasket sets and included 8 steel shim head gaskets, 2 composite head gaskets, & 2 steel head spacers that I was needing!

You could use elephant ear type mounting, usually a plate bolted to the block at the front under the water pump these should be common for a 426 drag cars and rails wouldn't use side mounts.

I'd have to space out my crank pulley, power steering, & alternator to get my pulley alignment back. It would also move the viscous fan dangerously close to the radiator. I'm also not a huge fan of the way they look.

Not much new to report, just been cleaning parts & measuring. Juggling various projects.

QUESTION

Trying to add parts to my Summit order to get the free shipping, I need cylinder head freeze plugs for this project, but don't know the right size. I'm at work now and can't measure them.

I also need some hinge bushings or a repair kit for my challenger to align the driver door before taking the quarter off. Is there a particular summit kit you guys like?

I added power steering to my Hemi in a 1970 Roadrunner.  If you get one Hemi pulley you need all the Hemi pulleys to get things lined up.  At several car shows, I seen what looked to be just 440 pulleys on Hemi cars with and power steering.  Do some extreme researching or it get costly fast.  I even needed a spacer for the crank pulley to finalize it. Also a lot depends on the Harmonic balancer size/type too.

Topcat

Hemi's came with 2 different thickness sizes on the Harmonic Balancers.

That can be a factor on what pulley's are needed for power steering.

Wow has it really been this long between posts!?

Anyway, its time for pushrods.

I would prefer a used factory set of mechanical SFT pushrods if anyone has a set to sell. I'm gonna put out some 'want' ads for a couple days. If nobody has any to sell, I'll go with a set of new ones I found for sale in stock length.

Chryco Psycho

I have always ordered new pushrods from Smith Bros in Bend Or , overnight production & made to match the spring pressures

UPDATE

Factory Solid Cam Pushrods + Replacement Intake Pushrod: $86
Second-hand Schumacher Mounts for 3rd Gen 6.4 Hemi:     $150
Cam Sprocket Offset Bushings: $12
Head Bolt Helicoil Repair Kit: $10

The Motor mounts offer broad flat plates on both sides I can trim & space to suit my needs. I'll be making plates that bolt to the block through the cross-bolts, & those will be bolted to the mounts.

I think I figured out the PN of my mystery valve springs. They are P5249848 rated for a max lift of .540". My cam is spec'd at a lobe lift of .356", multiplied by 1.57 yields .559"...

.019 too much, I won't know for sure though until I'm measuring.

Everything else is sketchy on this engine, why not another thing...
