I have an earlier 383 that came in my 73 challenger that is extremely fast.
I am planning on tracking down a period correct 340 for my car and selling the 383, but for now I would like to know the year of the engine.

Casting number is 2468130.8 which is383.
On the engine ID pad all it has is 0B144335

Am I correct that the 0 is 1970 and the B is Hamtrack?

correct, it is a 383 from a '70 Challenger built at Hamtramck

what is stamped on the pad below the distributor?

How can you tell what type of car from the partial VIN?

He makes an assumption based on other cars he has information on... Similar cars were built in batches. :alan2cents:

RUNCHARGER

If it runs great I'd leave it in. They're great for teaching Chevy guys what a real 383 is.

I'll post up what's on the distributor pad when I can; I've got the car up on my lift right now rebuilding the front end so it might be a day or 2

If it is a HP motor and and early NOV assembly date I would be interested in buying it. But going by the VIN I would say it was a late Sept or early Oct. built car.

Sounds good; do I get that information off of the distributor pad?

I'm having a hard time finding that number with all of the stuff on the engine in the engine bay.
Can you describe exactly where it is for me?

One picture is worth 1000 words--The alternator hides it.

Got a bit of time today and was able to clean up the spot pretty good with a brass brush. Still can't decipher what's on there, I'm guessing I'll have to pull the alternator to clean it up properly to see what's there.

Could have been machined off if the motor was ever decked  :dunno:

Very possible Alan--do you know if warranty block came stamped with this info-I know they did not have the VIN on them but no sure about the assembly date info.
