Need a 450 CFM Carb - sources and potential discounts?

Hey folks!

My "new" '74 Barracuda has an aftermarket Edelbrock intake and a Holley 600 CFM carb.  The throttle response isn't great in the car, and through some research I've done, I think the carb is just too big for the motor.  It looks like a 318 motor works best with a carb in the 400-450 CFM range.

I don't know a TOOOOON about carburetors, but I know that I don't need anything crazy fancy.  I was thinking a simple Edelbrock 450 with an electric choke.

But before I grab one off of Jeg's or something similar, I was wondering if folks had better suggestions or knew of a source that EBO members might get a discount through.

Save your money and find someone to help tune your car. Spend $ on that instead. Typical recommendations for carb cfm are 2x your cubic inches. Therefor a 600 cfm carb should be right for your motor. Learning a little about tuning these old cars is paramount to really enjoying them. They all have idiosyncrasies that require occasional tuning. If you can't do it yourself, it can really turn you off to this hobby. Having said all that there could be a myriad of other issues besides a carb that affect drivability. I would encourage you to find someone local to you, that can help with any issues you are having, and learn a little more about working on these old cars. Money better spent on education than throwing parts at a perceived problem...FWIW my :alan2cents:

There are a lot of good running 318s out there with 600/650 carbs on them.  I would strongly recommend the Eddy 650 AVS2 if you want a new carb.  I've got one on my 340 and it was essentially painless.  I have no doubt it would work better for the 318 because it's a little lean if you stand on it on my mild 340.  Starts, idles, and cruises around great.  They are pretty inexpensive too.

If you are running a 1406, like I am, mid-range was a huge dog... I did some research on it, and ended up putting in jets and rods that are stock with the 1405, and WOW, what a difference!

I agree and here is my take on it. A stock 2bbl 360 breathed through a 400CFM 2 barrel. You would be driving your 318 on a 225CFM 2 barrel most of the time, it just isn't going to be optimal and it will want to tip into the secondaries all the time. Better off tuning up that 600, that way it is using the 300CFM primaries most of the time and it will drive alot better.

The Holley is a decent carb , tuning is key , a 390 cfm 4bbl works great on 318s too but why spend $500 if you don't need to

Ran my 318 just fine on a 650 for years. The engine will draw the air it needs, but you'll need to tune the mixture.
