Just when you thought you were about done with everything and ready to get it on the road, another issue pops up.

Brand new engine rebuild from a reputable shop and the freeze plug starts leaking. Looks like they tried to seal it and then paint the engine. Not an easy location to get to either.

Yuck, what a pain in the arse!

That sucks. If they offer any kind of warranty, I don't know why the heck they would try to hide something like that when it may just blow back on them. Just fix it right the first time, it's cheaper and easier to do it when they had it in the first place

I watched a Youtube video yesterday where Dave th owner of an engine shop in Utah was measuring freeze plugs & there was no consistancy in the diameter , probably all sourced from China now

If the "reputable shop" can't properly install a core plug, I would not be feeling very comfortable with the work they did that I can't see.

What kind of warranty did they give you, I would want them to fix it? They shouldn`t need sealer on a freeze plug, that is hack work.

Dave's Auto Center?? He is freaking awesome and *really* seems to knows his stuff, and when he doesn't he digs in deep. seems to be a very fair and reputable mechanic with no BS, a rarity these days it seems. I enjoy his videos

UPDATE: Got the freeze plug out and replaced it with new sealant. But there are marks on the inside edge. Is this normal? Or did someone try to "stake" it to try and hold better?

jimynick

Looks to me like somebody used a hard driver/chisel to take the old one out and gouged the casting such that it would leak. I'd JB weld fill those gouges before re-installing another one. Good luck

Think I'd drop the word "Reputable" from the shop's description. No excuse for that.
