Is there a trick to removing the fan/clutch from a 1970 small block? I cant see how to take it off.

Chryco Psycho

There are 4 nuts on the studs coming through the water pump pulley , remove those 4 & there is nothing else holding the clutch on except rust !, you can tap / pry to slide the clutch off of the water pump

There's four bolts (1/2" wrench) hold the clutch/fan assembly to the water pump, once the bolts are removed it should come off with a little effort. Once the assembly is off, you can remove the fan from the clutch by removing the four nuts.  :alan2cents:

These four holes around the pulley? I wonder don't have them, maybe I took them out a long time ago. But it doesn't want to come apart. Is it OK to persuade it? Or just I be gentle? Any tips?

anlauto

As mentioned, looks like the only thing holding it on now is rust...try a hammer :alan2cents:

I would tap on the back of the clutch where the fan bolts to the clutch or hold the clutch shaft & beat on the water pump , the clutch & the water pump are likely going to need replacing anyway so hurt the part you care about the least

tparker

Yeah, it might require replacing. I'm trying to resuse what I can to save some bucks, but will replace what is needed. I took a few "gentle" whacks with a hammer, so it's on good. I'll play with it tomorrow. Maybe I can salvage something. The clutch looks ok as well as the fan itself. The pulley probably is ok after it's cleaned up. But a new water pump is probably required.

Chryco Psycho

There is a center shaft on the water pump that goes through the pulley into the rear of the clutch so I would try not to put stress directly on  the clutch if it seem OK , try to grab the shaft going into the clutch & hit the water pump housing , soaking it with trans fluid or penetrant cannot hurt either

anlauto

Is the fan clutch still nice and tight ? Might be seized by the look of that amount of rust  :dunno:

i just pulled mine to replace the waterpump, can anyone tell me if you can test the clutch to see if it still operates? Its a '70 with the A/C style clutch.

Chryco Psycho

Hard to test off the car but it should have little resistance to spinning when cold & tighten when warm , the shaft should not wobble either . usually you can see fluid leaking in the center rear of the clutch if the seal is bad

Obvious answer is WD-40 or any rust penetrant and a little time to soak in. Someone is lucky it didn't come off at speed. Lots of potential damage there. Is the rest of your engine that rusty ? Maybe check a few other things as well.
