Can you remove the fuel sending unit on a 73 challenger with the tank still in the car, or do you have to remove the tank?

RUNCHARGER

You can do it with the tank in place.

Any hints or tips?

If you have dual exhaust with original style mufflers, remove the drivers side muffler and muffler heat shield to get access to that side of the tank.  Removing the rear tire would probably also give you more room to work.  The tool that Floyd referenced looks pretty slick, but I've always just used a brass drift punch and a hammer to tap the lock-ring loose.

If you're replacing the sending unit then re-use your original gasket and lock ring or check out the combo offered by DMT.

Yes, and make sure you leak test it, before reinstalling the muffler!

I couldnt agree more....Dont damage any parts when removed.  Allot of the aftermarket sender parts do not fit correctly, big time

As DeathProofCuda said use a BRASS drift punch if you don't have the tool to remove the ring.  Had a friend of mine years ago use a screwdriver to get the ring off and poof it went up from a spark.  Fortunately it wasn't in the car at the time.  We were all teens at the time and had a good chuckle.  But you can see what damage could occur.

I use a length of dowel rod and a hammer...   it works...  Just don't use ANYTHING that can make a spark.   PS, dont even begin to try unless the tank is less than 1/4 full !!   Or it will leak gas all over you !!
