One of the things I really like about small block Mopars is how fast they wind up.  Could you get your HP numbers with stock stroke and higher compression?  :notsure:

torredcuda

I`d be open to stock stroke combos as well as long as they can run on pump gas 93 octane. I loved the old Elgin cam I used to have in my 340, powershifting at 7000 and it wanted more, sounded awesome!

Thing is by reducing the bob weight you can increase the stroke & still rev quicker than a stock 340.....  Stronger lighter pistons, stronger lighter rods... It's a win win deal...

Have a chat to Shane Kelly he is a member on here has a beautiful blue cuda it's stock stroke 340 and it flys yeah small blocks are pretty cool hey Shane builds his own engines ,

how long is a piece of string ??
so many ways to go here , 340/ 412
360 / 408
they almost gave away 360  LA blocks & with 408 ci you can build a monster
earlier 360 blocks are nothing special , but 87-92 have swirl heads & roller cams so that is an advantage .
I would put a better head on it yet , W2 is great , Trick flow is doing a small block head now .
You also have the 360 magnums which are different from the LA series
Then if you want to get real crazy you have R3 blocks with 6 bolt vs 4 bolt heads allowing W7 , W8 or W9 heads where 800 hp is possible !!

cam440

Yea those trick flow heads are the ticket I thought you were more a big block man neil

You can do this keeping it simple and not blowing a ton of money. Will be about 425 to 450 hp conservatively. 450-500 with porting and tweaking and $450 true 1.5 rockers that net a little more lift.

Mine is very streetable and runs off 91 octane California formulated gas. I drive it out to the local road course for occasional trackdays. That's why it's got the single plane, solid cam, rockers, and oils mods... all to shift rpm band up. But not necessary for regular street/strip/cruiser car

You can do this with a Comp XE275HL or Lunati 10200703 hydraulic cam, stock rockers and dual plane Edelbrock RPM intake. Pick the Scat balanced rotating assembly: cast crank 4", Icon forged 20cc dish pistons, I beam rods (no clearancing needed). Because it's a stroker it will make HP and TQ at lower RPM under 6000 without real aggressive cam that doesn't need stiff valve springs... so you can run stock rockers and save $450.

Add Edelbrock heads, TTI or Dougs headers, double pump good carb.

My Specs:

SHORT BLOCK: '69 340 block, now .030 over. Scat cast crank kit from Brian @Indio Motor and Machine.
BLOCK MODS: Oil passages smoothed and ported to reduce turbulence/cavitation and help flow. Valley smoothed and cleaned up to help oil drain-back. Water jackets/passages meticulously picked clean of rust and slag.
OIL PUMP: Melling high volume. Passages smoothed and matched to rear main cap.
HEADS: Edlebrock. Ported, intake and exhaust matched, combustion chambers matched to block,
VALVE COVERS: Old Cal Custom finned ($40 swap meet) with steel core MP gaskets for good no leak and removable seal
CAM: Comp 274S soild. .502/.511, 236/242 @.050
ROCKERS: Comp Pro Magnum steel rollers.
INTAKE: Mopar M1 Single plane, changed to squared carb flange, cleaned up plenum, port matched.
CARB: Demon Silver Claw 750 cfm advertised. Firesleeve on pump to carb 3/8" fuel lines
FUEL LINE: 3/8" sender and 3/8" body fuel line. Firesleeve near headers.
IGNITION: MSD E-Curve distributor
OIL PAN: Milodon Road Race/Pro Touring pan developed by Milodon from this project!
Windage Tray: Milodon with Milodon main stud kit
BOLTS AND STUDS: Milodon Made in USA all in house. Heads, Mains, Oil Pan

Yep.

And with a double pump carb mine surprises many how quick and responsive it revs.

We expected it to lag on the rev response. But we were pleasantly incorrect.

This sounds right up my alley as I don`t have a ton of money to spend on W2 heads or R3 blocks.. My current combo is a `72 340, stock forged crank, stock rods, old TRW forged pistons, around 9.4-5 to 1, lifter valley an oil holes deburred and painted, Comp Cams solid, forget which one of top of my head, heads are J that have been fully ported, factory 273 style adjustable rockers, Holley 750 DP with a Proform main body (flows 830), Hooker Super Comps.

How much will I gain going to the Edelbrock heads over my ported J heads? Any feedback on the Trick Flows yet, my buddy loved his on his Chevy Monza 350?

Really need to know what cam you have now. Stroker's soak up cam. Sorta like going up one cam size but getting idle and characteristics of smaller cam in a 340.

Of course you won't gain as much with edelbrocks over ported J's as not ported J's. Maybe you could take better advantage of the ported J's. Again depends on what cam you have now.

Could very roughly and a little oversimplified look at it this way... if you are at 1hp/cid currently, then you will gain 76 hp. And probably more torque. And you could bump the cam up one size and have your current drivability.

Shane Kelley

I have been waiting to see some more specs on the TF heads. So far everything I have read has been pretty vague. I have another build Im fixing to do and very interested in those heads. I'm thinking 340-416 stroker. But I haven't decided for sure. My other thoughts are stock stroke high rpm 340 like Cody mentioned. Something about big rpm's running through the gears.

Nothing wrong with ported X or J heads. Back in the day when Wayne County Speed Shop (Darrell Alderman Daytona Pro Stock) was big. I got my hands on a set of ported J heads they did. Real strong runner. But there are some advantages running aluminum heads over cast iron. Even if flow and blending is similar. The biggest one is they tolerate more compression. And that will wake up about any motor. Other advantages are weight and improved cooling.

The combination in my Cuda right now makes 358hp at the rear wheels. The short block is a very mild build with nothing special. Makes peak power at 6400 rpm but it will pull above 6800 in top gear.

Chryco Psycho

I would sell the X or J heads to anyone who still believes in them & find 308s , I gained 41 RWHP with ported 308s over ported X heads with no other changes
Don't waste your $$ on Edelbrock either , minimal gain & horrible core shift in the castings , use a good head if you buy aftermarket heads

That's about 55hp at the crank difference ported 308 vs ported X/J. Possibly the X/J's were tired and/or the port level didn't match the rest of the engine build???
