I like your combo Torred. If your J's are ported nicely I wouldn't spend the extra on Edelbrocks. I would wait and see what the Trickflows are like first. My gut instinct is they will be a good way to go.
My son is building a 240Z with a 360 with old DC 11.5 pistons and ported W-2's. I am expecting it to run very hard for a $4k engine. It should get into the 9's if we can hook it up.
As to the original question I would find a roller 360 block, stroke it, bore it the minimum needed so it has thick cylinder walls and most likely use Trick Flow heads. I would use forged pistons in it. Set it up to run pump gas and after I got used to it I would throw some nitrous at it if it wasn't fast enough.

That's same exact cam I'm running in my 4" stroke 416".

I'd think that XS274 would be a little rougher around the edges in a 340 vs 416 stroker. If you are ok/want same idle, pick a slightly bigger cam. Like a:

Comp XS282: http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=671&sb=2

Or between XS274 and XS282; the Lunati 30200741

Lunati 30200741: http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=3285&gid=342

All those two should somewhere just under and over 500 hp give or take. Not sure if your heads would be holding you back

I'm considering a SB stroker... new engine for this year of 2018.

360 LA (~77 year?)... squared block, 030, needs 1-sleeve (ran no more than about 25 hours... 22 years ago)
'69 340... stock short block
T/A 340 (just pulled from car after past 30+ years racing... 040 over)

above choices to work with...
prefer Eddy aluminum heads for weight loss
roller cam/hyd?

I fully understand the "Use what you've got" program, but honestly 89-92 visage 360's aren't hard to find at this point... Lots in junk yards... It gives you a roller cam on the cheap... You can slide in a different cam & reuse the lifters, rollers don't flatten cams... Build a 408 & go have fun...

roguedc72

lot's of good info in this thread, my 72 challenger has the numbers matching 340, it's not back in the car yet,I would like have some fun with this car without beating on the original engine, I like the idea of picking up a 360 to drop in instead, especially a roller as was mentioned, 87 to 92, I'm assuming this engine was used  in a pick up trucks?

RUNCHARGER

Yes: Pickup trucks, there's thousands of them in the junkyards and you can pick them up complete for less than the price of the lifters.

Barrel intake is a magnum motor.. Should be looking for TBI

So... what would be the difference/advantage of a barrel Magnum 360 vs a TBI (throttle body injection) ... for the block?

Question is what heads do you plan to run?  360 Magnum rockers are pushrod oiling so they eliminated to oil passages in the block to supply the heads....

MOPAR MITCH

I want to run Eddy aluminum heads... for lightening up the front end.... better overall performance for handling (accel/decel/cornering).

Edelbrock makes Magnum heads and LA style heads so depending on which you choose either block could work.... But the TBI block will work with either style head...
