I plan to bring my 8-3/4 back to it's original self (3.23) other than to cheat and go suregrip. The last owner tossed this in. Not much of a diff guy, so I'm reaching out. Keep? Use? Toss?
Car currently has a 741 SG with 3.91 gears. No way do I want to run with legs that short.
Dr Diff offered to set me up completely. I'll save where I can barring screwing something up. Any guidance appreciated.

well that would be the Auburn style sure grip & even the "weak" 741 carrier is decent

@Chryco Psycho  how does one determine if the sure grip is good or bad, good brand or not? Also, would I be more assured in just buying an entire ring/pinion/complete chunk from Dr Diff to be sure I was set up right? Keep in mind I'm no expert on diffs, but am very capable and proficient in micrometers.  I've just heard that one tiny mistake here can get costly. Dr Diff said they could send me all the literature I'd need to do the job complete.

My guess it that one is a good brand [original Mopar]  & looks like it is 50 years old !
the Only way to tell is open it up , if the cones are worn to the point were the cones are bottomed inside the case it is junk , yes you can machine the end off the cones & shim the springs to get some more miles buy why ? I looked at 4 20 years ago & I told the buyer & would take all 4 If I could open them up , all 4 were worn out .
Clutch type sure grips are far stronger & rebuildable , or the newer Trutrac design is far better yet .
All new parts is a good thing , have a pro set everything up with a warranty makes sense to me also . The hardest part about doing it yourself is the pinion depth , you have to press the brg on to get the measurement & either be extremely careful pressing the brg off to add shims or replace the brg again .

@Chryco Psycho your advice is always appreciated. We have a local shop that's been around for ages and is highly recommended. I think I'll back away from trying this one.
