Challenger Exhaust Tip disassembly and restoration

I've never tried to remove the chrome exhaust tips from the housing but I imagine it's not too difficult to drill out the original spot welds and remove the chrome tips (famous last words)?  Anyone have experience trying?  How would you reproduce the factory spot welds?  Has anyone tried to restore a set?  Attached pic is just for reference (not mine)
