Mr Lee

I just built myself a 28' wide x 24' deep garage mostly by myself.  Climate controlled, pine shiplap walls so i can screw a shelf or whatever else wherever i want into the walls.  One thing i added that I would suggest installing is a shutter fan into the wall for when you're dealing with paint fumes and whatever else you dont wanna breathe. Just turn it on, open a window and vent everything right out.   And don't skimp on the lighting and plenty of electrical outlets.

How High of a ceiling is needed for a lift--what do they cost ? Any prices on the spray foam ?

Mr Lee

Oh, and as far as slab thickness you'll have to check local building codes. But typically 4-5 inches
As far as single door or double is personal preference.  Personall i chose two single doors.  You can space them apart to your liking.  Also its nice to be able to open one smaller door and not let all the heat / AC out when opening an 18 ft wide door.

Spray foam prices will vary.  Get a bunch of quoted.  There are also diy kits for that

12 foot ceiling is what I have. My lift is the taller one thats available. You can move a 4 post lift to where ever you want it real easy and don't have to worry about thickness of concrete.

I was gonna suggest starting a thread on here about garages for people to post pics of their own garages / work shops... to see what kind of work space others have and maybe to help get some ideas.  I found that to be inspiring when I was planning to build my garage.    So, I just took a look and there already is one : )  But I don't know how to put a link in here for it  : (
I went to the Search and put in "Garage Shop".

Are you planning to have a big air compressor?  Welder?  Beadblast cabinet?  Air conditioning?   Make sure you have the enough power.  My house has 100 amp service and so does my detached garage.

No,  I am not opening a restoration shop-LOL. I have a blast cabinet and a small air compressor. I am 65 years old and just looking for some extra space to work on one car at a time. I do like the idea of a lift. That would make motor and trans installation so much easier as well as exhaust work.  I have have installed over 20 motors and trans the old fashion way with a cherry picker though.  I do have size and money restrictions though ( unless I hit the lottery soon ).
Lots of great input here and again I THANK YOU ALL.

Back in 2001 I had a 40x60, 10 foot ceiling built turnkey by Wick buildings. A super nice 4" concrete pour/finish with a 16x16 poured approach. 1 walk in door, and 16' double slider, no windows. R30 ceiling insulation and R15 walls. Ended up with about 25k in it after wiring it myself (I'm a career electrician). The days of those prices are probably over, but it's been a good building. I only wish I'd gone with 12 or 14' ceiling for a lift or two, but at least it's easier to heat.

HBO carports.  Crew came out of Mt Airy I think. Had some grading $500, before concrete $3900, and then the building, $7800.

24 x 30, insulated the top to prevent dripping.  Added electric, lights etc.  very pleased.

Thanks.  The wife calls it my play house.  Guess it is.  A couple more pics.  Can get about 13 channels on the antenna!
