Several postings on the ole interweb and twitter about the possibility of the France family looking to sell Nascar. That could be a bad thing or it could be a good thing depending how you look at it. It is true the ratings and attendance has been falling since 2008.

Ever since Toyota was allowed to participate in Nascar, fan attendance has really dropped off and that's not a coincidence! :bye:

That's EXACTLY why I lost interest real quick....I was never a huge fan....but was absolutely flabbergasted when Toyota entered :crying: :looney:

Honestly Toyota was a part of it. Nascar has made some great changes as far as safety, no one has been killed since 2001 when Dale Sr. lost his life.  But Nascar has made some very bad calls over the years., which has seriously damaged their image. Its just like they are not interested anymore.  My wife use to get mad when I would sit at the house on Sundays watching the race. Now if I miss a race so be it.

Skid Row

Started following NASCAR in  1967 (I was 8 yrs. old) when my dad took me to Bowman Gray stadium  "Saw my first race". Was 50 feet away when James Hilton Grenaded a HEMI in 69 at the North Wilkesboro track, Quit following as much in later 70's when Bill France Sr. sold out to GM (Let them run non factory  "Brodax " heads) Quit following altogether when Dodge left a few years ago.
Right now I hope Subaru buys them and Honda wins the manufactures cup.

My take is that in an effort to bring in more fans they abandoned what got em there and when the late comers found it no longer fashionable & left for the next shinny object the base (us good ole boys) were no longer interested in the Monster they had created....
They keep trying to change the formula but don't seem to realize they had it right 30-40 years ago.....
Loose the rules/templates/cookie cutter cars & people n let em have hat it...  :alan2cents:

Yup

It hasn't been "stock car" racing for some time.  Can understand why with the technologies, speeds, etc.  But even as that began, they had their solid base.

Other factors as well. Car interest of people isn't what it was. It's not dead. But it's changed. And I am sure per capita involvement down.

I watched as many races as we could in the 70s through the early 80s.  I can honestly say I haven't watched one whole race since with the exception of going to Indy in person couple years.  The only real highlight was standing 4 feet from Richard Petty in the pits ... I turned the corner and "bam" he was just standing there by himself.  The King is the King.

Good, Jr killed it........when contract runs out car owners will demand more as they should
New owner will need deep pockets so makes sense a media giant buys it.

Too bad can't turn clock back 10-20 years because that when it was real

I don't know what to think. I loved it in the 60's and 70's but things change. I would like to see a stock derived Charger or Challenger race against a similar Camaro and Mustang but the majority of people under 40 probably wouldn't be interested. Another thing that is ridiculous is trying to make it into a basketball game. It should be 500 miles, best team wins. It's become silly IMHO but The younger generation that value their phones more than cars and grew up playing computer games are the current market I guess.

Hey!!! Just cuz we like a car to turn right once in a while is no reason to berate us!   :stayinlane:  See? We even have an F1 emoticon on this site!

Seriously, I like them both but noticed the distinct lack of fans at Nascar races. Last race on Sunday had really sparsely  filled grandstands. I was really disappointed. The poor attendance made me wonder how much time nascar has left in it.

Well, maybe it's my dumbass Canadian perspective, but I think, as mentioned, that the restrictor plates, loss of individual bodywork and displacement restrictions played a large part in the decline, but I also think that the cost of going to these mega palaces has placed the working man out of the ability to buy a ticket for himself and his kid(s) and those with a big wad aren't the same types of fan as the regular guy and are, as also mentioned, moving on. The fuel injection thing was, in my mind, also a desperate throw towards hip-ness. Sell me a $25 ticket and a $5 beer with a $3 hot dog and I'll go- and I bet there'd be a hell of a lot more go, too.  :alan2cents:

I feel the #1 killer for me was restrictor plates , it was fun when 3-5 cars would draft & get away from the pack , they had to know & respect each other to make it work  , restrictor plates killed that , all engine innovation was gone , it didn't matter what engine you ran as long as it would last 5-600 miles & could make more than enough power so the restrictor limited it , that was all you needed . The restrictor plates caused 30 car wrecks , 1 mistake & everyone you were rooting for was out of the race by lap 20 .
After that everything else took away the fun even more , Dodge / Mopar quit , toyoda joined , unidentifiable jelly bean cars all looking & shaped the same , Cost of going to races , varied championship formats ... the local dirt track is far more fun . :alan2cents:
