I'd sooner have a 4 speed A66 than that car. I suppose it's history drives the value up to a Ford guy who is into it's heritage though of course.

There's been a couple write-ups in the last over the last week about a interesting local Mustang.  The first documented Mustang sold, still belonging to its original owner.  It was restored not long ago by her husband and looks great.
https://www.motor1.com/news/262749/first-mustang-sold-original-owner/
Anyway, they say it's worth 350K and i wonder about that.  If it wasn't the first sold, it would be worth maybe 35-50K maybe?  So being first sold increases its value 10X?  And any owner always has the risk sales records might surface on one sold earlier, you never know.
I've seen a couple interesting Shelby prototypes.  One was local here buried under junk in a garage not far from me back in the mid 90s.  A 68 Shelby mustang convertible that really was a '67 and had been a test car.  I saw it when I went to see a Challenger convertible the Shelbys owner had.  He told me the story and he was angry the Shelby club wouldn't document the car.
He got divorced and everything got sold, the Shelby ended up restored and went through a few owners and is owned by Samantha Stiles.  All documented now.
Another I have seen is a 69 GT 350 prototype with a Boss 302 engine.
I wouldn't be surprised if either of those cars would sell for 7 figures.

I'm no mustang guy but I can't believe someone along the line didn't think "Hhmmm, Shelby GT500....this is a rare car and worth some money." Sometime before now i mean.

IRON MAN

I don't believe it is the original prototype. There was one GT500 prototype hardtop, Little Red" . It had a twin Paxton supercharged 427 engine, NOT a 428. This car was destroyed by Ford to avoid product liability problems. Source: 1967 Shelby American World Registry.

Here is a picture of the one I let get away. It took first place at the Diablo Valley Mustang Show in 2006.

What about the sucker who believes this yarn and pays gobs of money for it thinking it is the real McCoy? Is it  a cool story still? When my Mom told my younger to stop telling stories it meant to stop lying.

Well If Marti has confirmed it's authenticity either his integrity is bought & sold like that of a certain Mopar "Guru" or the car never got destroyed.... Considering the "Green Hornet" was supposed to meet the same fate & also still exists causes me to want to believe Kevin Marti's integrity is intact.....

As far as the 427 vs 428 remember the story was written not by a car authority but a news reporter.... But then they never confuse/mis-represent facts...

To bad you let the Shelby get away, looks like a damn nice car....

Yes a 68 500 is my favorite Shelby of them all. I love the hood and grille treatment on them.

Let's stick to the facts. Marti has not confirmed it's authenticity.

Marti does not list the 427 as an engine that came with a 67 GT-500.

Marti does say a 428 came with the 1967 GT-500.

Marti does NOT say a 427 came with a 1967 GT-500 or any 1967 Mustang for that matter!

The Shelby Registry says  "Little Red" was destroyed.

All facts!

From the article....

Along with Billups, he'd brought along renowned Mustang expert Kevin Marti to authenticate the find. Marti last year confirmed that a Mustang shell that had been sitting in a Mexican junkyard for years was one of the stunt cars used in the Steve McQueen film "Bullitt."

Sounds like they documented it thru the vin number and since the Green Hornet sold for $1.9 I would think this one is right up there as well. I`m  a diehard Mopar guy but if I had lot`s of money to have a large car collection there would be a Mustang and a Shelby in it amongst all the Mopars.

"All facts! "

how many times have we heard that over the years, only to see something proven wrong. It's a FACT that Chrysler never offered an FK5 Superbird .... yet there are a few *known* factory ones that were made. in this case he already owns 1 of the 2 that were supposedly destroyed, so why is it that far of a stretch that both survived? just saying, never say say never.
Growing older is mandatory...growing up is optional.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

IRON MAN

Oh  Boy, you sure like to stretch things. The mustang Steve McQueen drove in the movie "Bullit" was a 1968 Mustang Fastback GT-390, Highland Green. In the past  31 years I've owned six 67-68 Mustg Fastbk's and have shown them throughout NORCAL. How many  have you owned? I'd like to know who's playing Devil's Advocate with me?
