How's Cooper doing since his son has been gone?
It's kinda weird? I expected him to be looking for him? When I brought Wilson's body home ( I buried him the backyard) I let Cooper sniff him , thinking it would help him to know he is gone.He gave a quick sniff then took off running around the yard enjoying himself. Cooper seems to be enjoying being the center of attention again? We always walked in the nearby woods and when I took Cooper for the first time without Wilson, he kept looking around . Kinda like "hey something is missing here" but other than that I don't notice him missing him at all? He is definitely handling it better than me the wife and my middle son Sam. Sure been a rough couple of days......  :(' I miss Wilson like crazy! Sam is having a really hard time..... :'(  The  lack of hearing thump thump thump of this tail and welcoming you when you get in the door, or not hearing the click of his nails on the kitchen floor is deafening....

I totally get it... Like I mentioned, lost two dogs in the last year, both times brought the other dog along & had them in the room.... One sniff & they just know... Coral & I are tore up & the remaining dog is getting on with life....

Tough one to bear. 2 in one year. With Cooper as old as he is I might be in the same boat to , who knows. Ya I was expecting something more in the grieving department with Cooper but that doesn't seem to be happening. I'm just figuring out though how dependant Cooper was on Wilson. Cooper is going deaf( as well as blind) or at least hard of hearing. Wilson and Cooper would always greet anyone who came to the door now Cooper doesn't as he can't hear and he depended on Wilson to alert him. I would often ask "Hey who wants a special cookie" which is a big gob of peanut butter on a dog biscuit . :D  Tonight I asked Cooper and he couldn't understand what I was saying , before with Wilson around they both went into barking fits and bouncing around before I could get the entire sentence out.  Just thinking... I'll have to try the processed cheese wrapper? That would wake either of them up from a dead sleep no matter where they were in the house !  :haha:
It will be an adjustment .... but we will work it out in time.

This is one of my current dogs.

Romeo - aka Pumpkin-Head, Bud-nic, and 1000 other names.  Here we are out on a walk on my property and he can't understand why we stopped so he looks a little sad.

My wife acquired him from a man that was moving back to New Orleans and Greyhound would not let him go on the bus.  She gave the man $100 even though he only wanted $30

Had a proud of myself moment last friday when the owner of the GSD (German Sheperd) rescue called me to do an emergency evaluation on a shep who's owner was going into assited living. I've been involved in the rescue for a few years already but not on this level. Altho his "dad" had had him since he was a pup, demntia was causing him to "forget" to feed and potty him regularly. He was way under weight and I could see that was taking a toll on him. Other than that a great dog just in need of some proper training. Happy to report we got him surrendered and pulled this boy last Sunday. Fritz it will be better from now on buddy!

It's a hard thing, even though the man doesn't have the ability to be responsible for Fritz's needs it doesn't mean he doesn't still love Fritz or that Fritz doesn't still love him....

RUNCHARGER

Yes: That's tough for sure.

Absolutely positively no doubt about it !

The man's adult children contacted us for help. As they knew dad could not take him into assisted living.

This is a picture of me and my old female lab today.  We had her put down today.  Really took a toll on or family. My wife was pregnant with our daughter when we got Mojo as a puppy.  She was 14 and my daughter is almost 14 now.  My son is 16 so she grew up with the family.  Thankfully we have a good life so far and this is the first loss of something or someone close for the kids.  Still not fun.

So Sorry, it's never easy but the one that your kids grew up with is especially tough......

Brads70

I'm so sorry. I understand the pain you and your family are feeling. They just don't live long enough even when they have lived a full life in dog years. In time the good memories will outweigh the bad ones. We bought a shadow box and a picture frame that holds 10 pictures or something to make a sort of memorial , haven't done it yet as it's too soon but a place to put his collar and get a few our our favourite pictures together.  :sorry:
