Lake Tahoe..... What's the must see and Do's?

Tahoe..... we want to go there and check it out..... Wife born and raised here, but has never been there. I was there long ago just don't remember other than 1 overnight camping. So anyone who knows this place where are the places to see visit, and if course any good eats!

If you can make the time drive completely around the lake..... Definitely find the time to hit Emerald bay.. A ride on the Tahoe Queen would have been great but unfortunately the Tahoe Queen caught fire in late 2016 while being repainted.... They have another paddlewheeler the M.S. Dixie II you might look into...  Personally I'm not into gambling or clubbing so I prefer enjoying the incredible scenery around the area.....  Another tip... Rather than fly up Highway 50 like most folks do consider taking Highway 88 up through Jackson Pioneer Station, Buckhorn, Cooks Station, and Ham's Station before entering the state game refuge. SR 88 continues paralleling the county line with El Dorado County in El Dorado National Forest before passing by Silver Lake and Kirkwood, where SR 88 crosses into Alpine County.  In Alpine County, SR 88 continues by Caples Lake.... Just past Caples you'll take a left onto hwy 89... 89 joins with Hwy 50 in South Lake Tahoe... Much more scenic that 50.....

BTW On the drive up grab lunch at the Kirkwood Inn...Just past Silver Lake you'll  Kirkwood Ski Resort will be on the right, just past it on the left is "The Kirkwood Inn.... If you see Caples Lake you missed it, go back.... 

There are great stops all the way up 88....

  Drive around the entire lake. Really beautiful. You are also close to Truckee, CA and the ranch where the Ponderosa TV show was filmed. Don't forget to go swimming and boating!

More about the Kirkwood Inn...  BTW yes kids are more than welcome...


In 1860, pioneer Zachary Kirkwood moved to the area from Ohio. He acquired three 160-acre parcels of land. He used this land for a cattle ranch. In 1864 he built and opened Kirkwood Station. It served as an inn, post office, and a restaurant. Its convenient location, where three county lines meet, made it a popular stop for cattle ranchers and passing Washoe. When Prohibition took place, the inn had a bar on wheels that they would move across the different county lines that met in the bar depending on which members of law enforcement from certain counties were visiting. It is also believed they did this to avoid paying tax collectors their cut of liquor receipts. They also had slot machines hidden in the kitchen.

In the 1960s, when the founders of the Kirkwood Mountain Resort came to visit the area, a snow storm took place. The entire inn was buried under the snowfall. The founders had arrived with a team for a snow survey. They used the survey poles to find the top of the Inn. After locating the structure, they were able to access the inside of the Inn. They lived in the buried building for eight days.

This is perfect! Awesome, we have had some of our best trips doing it this way!
When we go to Pismo beach mostly we just shoot down 101, but the best time we've had was cruising hwy 1 all the way down. Instead of 4-5 hours, it took us all day, but man it was just a great trip.

Really depends what you are looking to do.

My family had a place in North Tahoe for quite awhile and I prefer North Shore over South as I'm not a big fan of the casino's down there or the crowds. Paddle wheeler is kinda fun but I would also recommend renting a boat from around the Tahoe City area and then making a trip south and then through Emerald Bay.

If you want to make a fun side history trip - head over to Carson City and walk around an old mining town. It's a real step back in time and kinda fun.

 I usually try to swing by Summit in Sparks and pick up a few things. Another history point is the Donner party information center. Have fun on your get away.
