The man wants to get paid.

Which brings up a chilling thought, if they are going to these extremes it must be bad. I.e. Debt, over bloated budgets, etc

Bingo...  10 years of liberal rule and Ontario's debt rivals California

Almost sounds like HP follows Ontario politics

No my friend, it actually EXCEEDS it! Ontario's debt ratio is the highest of any of the first worlds other states. As you mentioned, 14 years of Liberal rule has doubled out debt and the ba$tards just keep blowing dough like drunken sailors. Don't get me going about Kathleen, the ruler of the Peoples Republic of Ontario!  :steamingmad:
In the immortal words of Jimmy Scott- "pace yourself!"

If they would only quit spending money when they run out of money , like a drunken sailor has too.

On the plates/tags -- the rule has always been the same, though they appear to be enforcing it vigorously now.

And you are bang-on with respect to the Ontario government:

- largest sub-sovereign debt of any entity on the planet - >$300B and counting

- despite a 50% increase in government revenues over the past 14 years from taxes, fees, etc, the provincial budget is still running a multi-billion dollar deficit

- electricity rates have more than doubled in that time due to their 'green' policies forcing people to choose between heat and food, and forcing businesses to relocate

- an anti-business/anti-productivity stance with increased red tape and a top combined income tax bracket of almost 54%.  And at an income only half of what would be the top bracket in the US.  Plus a 13% sales tax on what's left, applied to almost everything but some groceries (yes, you pay it on your heat, electricity etc)

- outlawing the use of the words 'mother' and 'father'

- proposed legislation to give the state control over kids who claim to be trans, even over the controls of local Children's Aid Societies

- just introduced rent control

- proposing legislation to jack the minimum wage to $15/hour (from $10.50) - more than 2x the inflation rate

- proposing legislation to force businesses to justify why part-time positions aren't full time positions.

...and the list goes on.

Our premier (governor) is not only corrupt, but evil.

North Dakota has a similar license plate rule; 25 year old vehicle qualifies for a collector car plate, and a 40 year old vehicle qualifies for a pioneer plate.

I had a 69 Charger some years back and when it turned 25, I went down to get the collector car plates because they were a one time fee plate, good for life, and the gal at the counter IMMEDIATELY went into her speech on how I cant take it for a Sunday drive, I cant give anyone a ride, I cant take it to work, I can only take it to car shows, on and on....until I said just forget it...

So when my 70 Coronet turned 40, ND has a rule that you can use an original, year correct license plate as your pioneer plate. So I found a nice set of ND, 1970 license plates on Ebay and waltzed into the DMV and told them I wanted the pioneer plates on my car and these were the ones I wanted to use. The lady at the counter quickly said "nope, you have to use the standard issue pioneer plate". Luckily, I had done my homework and had printed the official policy from the DMV website stating that I could use my own plate. I showed her the info, she called the main office for advice, and a few minutes later I had my original 1970 plates on the car. Felt good to win a small victory with the DMV....

On the other hand, I do see a little of the other side of the issue the OP brought up. I see a few vehicles from time to time wearing collector or antique plates that have no business wearing them.I know I am in no position to define what vehicles are "collector" or not, but I see vehicles that are just junk and the only reason the owner puts collector or antique plates on them is to save the registration fees.

Ontario has something similar to pioneer plates called YOM (Year Of Manufacture). I had a cool pair of Ontario 1970 plates but scrapped the idea after finding out the MTO (DMV) wanted $250.00+ extra plus they still had to be registered yearly at the daily driver plate rate.

I win Calif has 458M in debt and this doesn't even go into the unfunded liabilities like pensions that are not even covered. Saw a news piece which showed that every Californian owed 90K each for all the pensions they handed out.

Resurrecting an old thread

Below is an email I sent to Service Ontario, they passed the buck to Driver & Vehicle Contact Center. Maybe I should go straight to Doug Ford with this. I wonder if more Ontario historic plate owners wrote to the MTO (or whoever) it might get some traction.

Re: Historical License Plates. Now that the price of historical plates is the same as regular plates ($0.00) are the driving restrictions no longer valid or are the wheels in motion to have them eliminated and the policies affecting them lifted. I believe the low annual fee of $18.00 was a result of driving restrictions. Since that cost is no longer relevant, shouldn't the restrictions also be no longer relevant? Thank you.

I have heard that Ontario is planning on introducing mandatory safeties every two years instead of this license renewal. He just hasn't revealed his whole plan yet, till the elections are done that is.
Don't have any credible facts on this, just from a mechanic who mentioned he has to buy a 32k machine to do this. Again rumours, but I would not be surprised, they don't usually give you money , they will take some other way

Weird, this is the first I've heard of this :dunno:  Maybe that's why I don't see a lot of those plates out there ...
I've taught you everything you know....but I haven't taught you everything I know....

What I've read is that safeties will be every three years. Will cars with classic plates be exempt? I'd love to know. If not, will we have to go back to full exhaust systems with catalytic converters? I expect there's lots of classics that wouldn't pass a safety right now. Is it possible we'd get grandfathered in to any new changes or restrictions?
