Interesting.  So IIRC this is one of two '71 V-code 'Cuda projects that Rick had for sale back in '91 or '92.  Both non-shakers, both 4-speeds and both with brown interiors.

Both cars appear to have been sitting outside for a length of time.
What a shame as they probably were in beautiful shape to begin with.
There is surface/flash rust all over the engine compartment and underside.
The Challenger is in worse shape than the 'Cuda.
The Challenger has bubbles on the quarter panels and a quarter size chip in the paint with rust starting under it.
Paint on the Cuda is better but a little faded and weathered. The Cuda's roof is looking a little worn.
Neither of the cars run and they both would need a fair amount of work done to them to get them ready to even try to start.
I lifted the shaker assembly and there was water everywhere underneath.
The engine in the Challenger appears to be modified and has headers, aluminum valve covers etc.
Interiors on both cars seem to be in nice shape.
I didn't get a good look at the underside but they both appear solid.

I would be curious of value/price estimates as well.

There are a number of local Mopar guys interested and some have very deep pockets.

I've been to Marshal's collector car auctions at Skipco before and they are a reserve auction.

They usually know the value of the cars and set the reserve pretty high.

I've seen the same Marshal cars go through the auction a number times.

It's been raining for the last few days and it just kills me to see the cars sitting there with their hoods popped open :'(

The emblems on the Shaker are broken(someone probably tried to steal them) and the shaker is sitting all crooked with water everywhere on top of the engine, the hood itself won't even close.

Not that I'm aware of.

I don't understand why the cars are sitting out, usually the high end Marshal cars are inside....

The Challenger may go for a fair price but with restoration costs the new owner will still end up upside down. I bet the Cuda will go for a bit less than restored. With the internet these auctions are seen by everyone and the 71 Cuda foamers will be out in force.

In my opinion, judging by the pictures and not knowing how these auctions work....

I would guess or hope that the Challenger will fetch in the $45K-$55K range and the Cuda will likely surpass $100K if more than one person wants it....anything under $100K would be considered a bargain.

Thinking the Cuda would be the $45K range would be considered a dream come true :veryexcited:

They told me the same thing this morning.    Doesnt sound like its going to be a well run auction for these cars.   They think that both cars are restored showroom pieces.   They definitely arent that caliber of car, instead they are sitting out in the weather and rain..

If it truly is that difficult to place a bid, or if you have to be there in person with a briefcase of cash....then that will for sure hold back the price.
There would be a lot of potential buyers worldwide, but not if they can't bid :alan2cents:

From their website:

Sale terms: $200.00 cash down at the time of bid. Two working days to complete transaction by cashier or certified check with full purchase price. Failure to complete this transaction within two working days will result in forteiture of the $200.00 and all future buying rights.

Plan How You're Going to Make Payment
Skipco Requires a $200 cash deposit for all regular public bidders immediately after you win the bid on a unit whether it is "Pending Approval" or "Sold". (Bring $200 Cash if you plan on bidding on a unit or $200 Cash for each unit if you plan on bidding on more than one!)
Buyers fees are tiered. To view current fees, come in and have them printed with your registration.
Additional $35 buyer's fee for online purchases on simulcast.
No Buyers fee for US Marshal's cars purchased.
The remaining balance is due within 2 business days in the form of a Cashier's Check or Money Order. We do NOT accept cash for the final payment.
ALL vehicles "SOLD" on the block and not paid for by 6:00pm on Tuesday will automatically be charged a $25 late fee and purchasers are subject to default of sale and loss of bidding rights. Vehicles purchased "ON APPROVAL" will be given 48 hours from time of approval to complete payment, after that time a late fee equal to your buy fee will be imposed and purchasers are subject to default and loss on bidding rights. THIS POLICY APPLIES TO ALL PURCHASERS.
Skipco does not offer financing, it is your responsibility to get pre-approval before you bid on a vehicle. Skipco does work with several financial institutions, lists are available on location.

If paid for on Saturday, the keys will be given to you at that time and you are free to take the unit.
The title will be then mailed to you, or can be held at the window to be picked up.
You have the option of paying within two full business days after the auction.

Oh that's another thing I asked about. They only take cash in 5000 or less. So you can't even show up with a briefcase full.   And both of the cars have a reserve.

Here is a photo of the car restored probably 10 years ago.It was restored by a shop in the Twin Cities area. I sold the car to Lee Hoffman who was a banker in Chicago. You may recall he was involved with the blue 4 speed Hemi Cuda convertible that was the first musclecar to sell for $1,000,000.

I thought the Cuda would have went higher actually. I figured the Challenger would go that high, but the bidder would be much better off just spending $70k up front for one in better condition. JMO.

The bidding blew past my $50k bid quickly, I'm not a huge 71 'Cuda fan but I thought the 'Cuda was well bought especially with all the verification and history given here on the car.:alan2cents:
The winning bidder was present at the auction, maybe somebody here?

The 'Cuda's cosmetics probably can be corrected fairly easy so as long as the engine/drivetrain were good the car had the potential to look as good as the restored pics.

The Challenger bidding did not meet the reserve. There might be some behind the scene negotiating but I wouldn't be surprised to see it on the block again.

The wifegod did not win the 1970 Camaro either.....

I'm sure the Marshals had them appraised.

The 'Cuda is listed as sold

The Challenger bid is listed as pending approval.

They all Pretty well have reserves at these Marshal auctions.
Knowing the Cuda as I do the price was 'well bought'. I feel it should have been into the six figures.

The interesting thing will be the sheet. Most often when cars are seized paperwork is lost as the people grabbing the cars seldom know what it is or the significance of it. Sheets are seldom kept in a vehicle. The brown Canadian Hemi Coronet four door sedan lost it's sheet when the bank grabbed it. Luckily for Mike Ross I kept a copy from when I had the car and bought the sheet from a previous owner.

So I'm assuming the 79.5k on the cuda was without the fees which were maybe 10%. If so the 79.5 would be 87450.00

Marshal cars auctioned at Skipco don't have buyers fees, not sure if any other added "fees" apply.
Sales tax is added of course.

I could be wrong but I don't think there are additional fees at this one.

I was very tempted Sheldon to buy it back.

I'm even more surprised @JEJJ (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/jejj_169) that you have a "friend"  :haha: :haha: :haha:

I will clear some things up about the mystery Cuda purchase  and Jim's one and only friend. Yes I am his only friend, in Pennsylvania that is. He put me on to the car about 3 days ago. My 15 yo son and I took an empty trailer to the auction this morning. I had to see it in person and check all of the numbers before throwing cash around.   Mainly because I'm not a buyer of questionable cars, only stuff with good history and no stories. Jim has been there when I have bought a number of them.  He's a bit of a bad influence Alan. Anyway, It's been sitting for a number of years since the drug seizure but it is in beautiful condition.  A few minor things that need fixed, we will tinker with it over the Winter for sure..fire away with the questions..

I just figured out that the Cuda sold today for $79,500.00
Seems a little high but maybe not?

I was one of the internet bidders. I noticed some pictures were added on Skipco's website including a couple blurry pics of the block stamping.  I couldn't make them out, does the block stamping match the VIN?

Yes the motor matches the Vin as well as the radiator shroud and the cowl. The transmission does not match. I believe it was an automatic back in the day when it was found. I think Rick had something to do with it that that time..

Hey Dr V
I don't know you but Congrats on the buy.
Pretty cool you found out about the car and immediately busted a move on it.

Those Who Dare Win

When a good car pops up you need to be ready to make a move. I know personally I have missed out on a few good cars because I hesitated or didn't just hop in the car or plane and go get it.
Kind of funny, on the last one my wife even chastised me. " Listen man you can't be messing around if you find another good car, just buy the damn thing. We will figure the details out later".......LOL

Enjoy the car and keep us posted.

Matt

Thanks Matt I appreciate the great words. My wife is the exact same, she knows what a good deal is and what isn't anymore. She usually gets surprised though when the car Carrier just shows up in the driveway with it. Lol. I told JEJJ the same thing 2 days ago. If I don't go to the auction and the damn thing sells for 55K I will be sick to my stomach. It all worked out just fine.

No harm in asking whatsoever. I took a bank check with me today in the amount that I was willing to spend. It was well over what I paid for the car. They are sending me a refund in 5 business days. It was the only way the car could get released right after they hammered it.  By the end of the morning, they were quite easy to deal with. They just made it seem difficult a couple of days ago.

Thanks for the info.
When I looked at the cars in person they told me I could bid on the cars on the internet and pay for them on Mon or Tues but I didn't want to leave them sit there. I was surprised they were sitting outside as most high dollar Marshal cars at Skipco have to be stored inside.

So you were able to get the 'Cuda running?
Enjoy the great car.

The is a great score Dr V. You got to figure you got it for at least $20-$40k under market value....plus it is a pretty good story to tell how you bought it. Hopefully you can locate the original broadcast sheets. At the very least you know that Rick Simpson has a copy of copies of the originals for you.

What a cool car, I can't wait to see some more pictures of it.

Best of luck with it!

Dave

Little Update.   The car had been sitting for years and the motor paint was a mess from a leaky thermostat housing.  Carbs are being rebuilt as I type.  I gave the motor a fresh coat of paint.  Reassembly in a couple of weeks.  Wanted to get this done before the exterior paint correction in November.  Before and after pics

Well folks, I had the entire car professionally wet sanded and polished. We put a carnuba sealant on the entire car. There are 0 paint flaws now. All of the scratches from 7 years of sitting are completely gone. The car has a mirror finish and is like glass. Reassembling the motor right now. It is almost ready. Had to replace the gas tank. Moisture had settled in and ruined it of course. I detailed the Dana and everything else while the tank was out..

Well guys and gals, its finally done.  We did our best.
I put a lot of NOS Parts on this car, including door handles, multiple engine parts, and wheel centers.. I tried to  get as many of the reproduction Parts off of the car as possible and restored it with  a lot of NOS. I had a full paint correction done on the car and the paint is amazing. When they restored this car up in Minneapolis 10 years ago, it was done very well.  We did reshoot the original shaker bubble, it needed it. We set the timing today and wrapped it up.  We are gonna get it to the dyno sometime this winter. Big thanks to Jim Tanner. My behind the scenes Cuda specialist. Eric

Alan, I think that's going to have to happen next month. I dressed up the BFGoodrich tires as much as possible and they just aren't doing it for me. It needs 15in polyglas to be perfect.
