Title: RESTORAG ...HAPPY CUSTOMER
Post by: anlauto on August 26, 2017, 05:50:05 PM
Picked up this new customer today, sorry I only snapped this one picture before I close the doors on it for a couple of months before I can get at it.

Little bit of a GOOD/BAD story to this one....with a twist....

GOOD: Owner has had the car for 38 years, bought it when he was 17. Enjoyed it for most of those years. It's an original 1970 Challenger R/T convertible, numbers matching 383 Column Automatic, FE5 Red, Black top and interior. He tossed the original tag years ago with the rusted aprons :pullinghair:, not sure if there's a build sheet, owner doesn't think so. Didn't see much else for options.

BAD: Typical "Body Shop Horror Story" Brought it to a local restoration shop for a ground up restoration in 2009. Spent a lot of money and had the rust repaired.....Still has a long way to go. Owner of the shop sold out everything and is moving this month....car was going to move with him, but the owner was tired of waiting and actually wanted the car finished....That's where I come in....

TWIST: Restoration is not going to be stock. The car is set up already for front and rear Control Freak suspension, Wilwood Disc Brakes, Tremic 5spd behind the original 383. TTI exhaust. Also going with 17" YearOne rallye wheels.

There's a similar type situation in my area.
Viet Nam vet bought a '70 Challenger R/T 383 4 speed vert new.  Drove it for many years, but eventually stored it away and it became a "gonna fix it someday" situation.
His kids must have watched that Chip Foose show, as at some point they got the car out of storage and sent it in for restoration without dad's knowledge.
It got completed, and is pretty sharp.  But the shop restified the car, it now has the 17" year one wheels, a T/A spoiler, a lot of mods under the hood, and a custom dash.
I'm a purist, so I cringe a bit when I see this car.
But dad is taking it all over the place and seems thrilled with it, so in the end that is what is important.

This will be a fun one to watch come together.  And it's in the right hands now too.  How did he get you to do a non stock restoration?   :pokeeye:

YES...Unfortunately the owner of that car stop paying and I had to give him the boot. The car was shipped back to California to be finished (I guess).
All I ask is to be paid for the work I do in a reasonable amount of time :bigmoney: :dunno:

I must be the only sucker that takes on basket cases....The parts for this car are so unorganized it's not funny.....not to mention I think I only received about a dozen bolts to put it back together  :'(

Oh well......now starts the daunting task of sorting and organizing !  :tired:

The good parts about this deal, is that you're the only guy I know who not only knows what bolts are required, but that you also have them and know pretty much every piece on these cars and where they go. The guy will be happy by the time you and your "guys" do your things, I know!  :bigthumb:

Oops...they did it again......
I can't believe what some shops will do because of their lack of knowledge of a particular car or attention to details :steamingmad:

Check out their idea of a spare tire bracket compared to an original....and the problems that could cause if found AFTER paint  :pullinghair:

Never owned a ragtop ebody, but don't the spares mount in a different location on a vert compared to a hardtop? Or was it if the car had a space saver regardless of hardtop or convertible?    :notsure:

Convertibles ONLY came with collapsible spares, and yes they mount farther rearward for clearance for the collapsed roof.

I can tell it's mostly new metal, but I am having difficulty finding a paint shop that will just paint over someone else's body work. My two primary shops won't touch it without stripping it back down to bare metal, which the owner wants no part of....I'm bringing it to another shop next week to see what they have to say...

I can tell you from experience why good shops won't go over something somebody else did. When something comes loose or bubbles the blame game begins. Body man says it's something with the paint. Paint shop say's it's something the body man did. Owner wants to know who's paying to fix it. Lots or scary potential problems.

I understand that fully....The car's owner made the choice and has been made aware of the consequences, not much more we can do  but hope for the best. :fingerscrossed: So far the guys doing the final block/paint have been pretty impressed.

When you do a car with moderate rust how long does the body shop usually take to get it done?

I split the two jobs...I have one shop do the metal work/rust repair and another shop do body and paint.
I currently have four cars in four different shops getting painted....and one car in the metal shop.
My main shop usually turns out body and paint in about 10-12 weeks. They've done 19 cars for me and have the 20th right now.
I've had them done in as little as 5 weeks as well.

This is the first time I've used the shop this red car is in because my other shops refused to paint over someone else's body work (refer to the start of this thread)

So I went and picked this up today from my body shop.....looks real sweet....This was easy for them, just said "paint EVERYTHING red" and they knocked it out of the park  :drooling:

For anybody counting along at home.....That's three fully painted shells I've picked up in 59 days, a little over 8 weeks......

Looks like I'm going to be busy for a while....

Looks nice!  That's a lot of red to spray. Do you now what stages they painted everything? Bottom first etc....    Did they jamb it in first or paint everything all together like the factory?
Title: Re: New at A.G.A.R.......RESTORAG BACK HOME !
Post by: anlauto on March 22, 2018, 02:17:32 PM
Bottom first, then interior and jambs and quarters. All other body panels off the car. I believe they color blocked the quarters and resprayed again, not sure if they assembled the car for color blocking the panels or not....I saw the panels being cut off the car, so I guess the final paint was done off the car, not sure when polishing was done, but final polishing was done with the car assembled.

The idea was to have a basically stock looking car on the inside, only the 5spd lens on the shifter will be "non-stock", and the outside appearance basically stock, with 17" wheels vs 15"......and then when you get to a show or cruise night...open the hood....BLING ....and the crowd goes wild.... :unbelievable: 8) :cooldance: :bravo:

I've enjoyed building it, and I love how it's turning out....but not my cup of tea either.....although i think I've said it a million times...I love the wheels... :drooling:

Title: Re: RESTORAG ...To Top it off....Outside pictures
Post by: RUNCHARGER on July 10, 2018, 08:51:37 AM
Well: When a Challenger is "right" the bumper and hood molding kind of make a beautiful loop. The camera angle makes this one look like it comes to a point and droops down a bit.
Actually in these shots of my orange car it looks like the bumper was angled up just a smidge (1/4" or so). When they look good the slight curve of the bumper matches the profile of the hood trim (as long as the hood has never been damaged either) perfectly. (ignore the incorrectly repaired left fender on the orange car, It's a bioch fitting trim to a finish painted car when a misteak was made like that).
Like I say I think it is probably camera angle that makes the convt. look pointy, on the road it probably looks perfect.

If you followed along from the beginning you would know I rescued it from another restoration shop, so I didn't have any of the rust repair or body work done. I did not supply any of the suspension. To date I would guess he's spent $80K CDN roughly.

Just looking over the invoices now that the car is finished.....

Interesting dates:

I yanked this car out of another restoration shop that was basically closing it's doors on August 26th 2017, less then a year ago. The car was in the other shop since 2009. :(

I put the car in storage and didn't move it into my shop until October 17th 2017.

So 291 days, or 41.5 weeks, or 10 months to finish what the other shop couldn't do in 8 YEARS ! :pullinghair:

I hope he registered with the e-bodies.org group. He's welcome to park with us either way on Diamond 1.

I doubt he's pre-registered and pretty sure he's not aware of this web site. :dunno:

@RUNCHARGER (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/runcharger_192) @Brads70 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/brads70_12)  Get a load of this....I'm not sure about "rubber on the ground" or "bugs in the grill" but here's a condensed version of an email I received from him today...
Hi Alan,

Decided to attend Cruise Night in Brampton last evening. Not a wise move.

I picked up my daughter who lives downtown near the SkyDome. Blue Jays game was on so we were struck in traffic for 30 minutes.  Cooling system worked well, guage started to move past the mid point but then the fans kicked in and cooled it down.  But after about 25 minutes the car started smoking from the exhaust...and it was sluggish.  I pulled into a parking lot and let the car sit for 10 minutes. Checked under the hood, everything was fine.  Started the car and no more smoke.  We drove to Mississauga and I filled the tank with some Ultra 94 at the Petrocan as I thought maybe the car had some bad gas.  Checked the oil and it was still at the full mark.

We drove up Highway 10 to Brampton when it started to rain lightly so we pulled over to put the top up.  Car still good.  We got to the Cruise at Shoppers World at 10 and Steeles but apparently there was a torrential downpour there and everyone had left except 2 or 3 cars so we turned around and stopped at a restaurant to eat. After an hour we left.

Got on the 401 and a torrential downpour started. I couldn't believe it!  Wipers on at full-speed and they worked well.  Rain subsided and then another torrential downpour when we got close to downtown.  White knuckle driving for sure.  I dropped my daughter off and headed home still in stop and go traffic and very heavy rain.  Car seemed a bit sluggish but temp and oil pressure was fine.

Car handled very well in the rain and water tight...

Creating memories I guess.... :dunno:

I'm just glad I'm not the one cleaning it.... :haha:

P.S. As a side note, his daughter is in her 30's and has never seen the car run... :Thud:

You know, I love it: It's a darn car and I've picked up new cars/trucks and drove them in the snow, rain, whatever, that's what it's for. Sounds like you did a proper job on the windows, weatherstripping, wipers etc. too Alan.
