Looks like the AAR rolled? What's the story behind that?
That was Swede's car #50221. He rolled it in practice at St. Jovite (the 8th of 11 races that season). They had to go to Dan's car (50211) for that race. I'm not exactly sure when the third car (50231) was built, but they had to get it done quickly as the last couple of races of the season were coming up, and Dan was about to retire.
I would have sure like to have seen them run the 71 season. History might have been different. Pretty hard to do well in a 1st year racing program.

I agree. Swede took two poles, and ran well at several races. Just too many new un-tested parts breaking.

Some of you may know Team Cuda and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. They just posted this photo taken of the way down last year. Story is it was raining and hailing very hard at the time. Sadly, Jess and the 'Cuda are not running the PPIHC this year. In fact, the classic division was rolled into the Pikes Peak Open division to boost car counts. This has now become a catch all division that has everything from a '69 Camaro to a 2017 Palatav D2 (yea, I was wonder what the heck that was too: https://www.palatov.com/cars/d2/ ) There also is a Howe TA2 Mustang in this group this year along with a Nissan Skyline and some classic Porsches.

What's fascinating is to see the old "in race" pics. I remember some of those pics from my bible when I was growing up.. "Mighty Mopars".
95th edition of the Pikes Peak Hillclimb is complete. Fog, hail, and wet roads forced the finish line to be moved lower down the mountain some, but previous records still manage to stay intact.
The open class, which contains the classic cars now, was won by Peter Cunningham in a 2017 Acura TLX, placing 2nd overall. Second in class was Chris Lennon in a '73 Porsche 911 RSR, placing 25 overall. Third in class and 34th overall went to RJ Gottlieb in his '69 Camaro. Some of you may be more familiar with him and the moniker "Big Red" as this is probably one of, if not the first, pro touring build that has steadily been refined over the years.
Also absent this year was the Hot Rod Magazine Special Viper ACR in the Time Attack 2 class.
Whats interesting to see with the asphalt standard now, is that the unlimited cars no longer are the dominate class with lowest times on the mountain. The top 5 spots were, Unlimited, PP Open, Open Wheel, Time Attack 1, and Motorcycle.

John Sandberg's awesome SCCA C/Prepared Solo II racer! Read all about his car, along with my car, as featured in the August 2006 Mopar Action edition. The car was raced with the SCCA Solo II program, and related other clubs, all through the 70-80-90s (then it was triple black)... he still has the car.

What's the purpose of the window netting?
Keep body parts in and debris out. I believe it was Petty's Darlington crash, shown above, that created the window net after his arms were flapping about outside the car during the roll over. He also added diagonal to the roof halo part of the cage that is still referred to as a Petty Bar by some constructors.

I went to see the Martin Truex Jr championship car and trophy tonight at their race shop here in Denver They had a nice display of some other cars too. The car with the flag is the actual car he drove in Miami to win the championship. It is banged up, has a blown left rear from the burn outs after the race, and confetti from winners circle still on the car.

That Magnum didn't cut through the air very nice, I believe they reskinned that chassis as a GM and it was all over.
True the Magnum was not successful , 1 year & done
The nose looked pretty good, I imagine the backlite was the problem.
The 80s sucked for nascar "stock car" racing. Horrable areodynamics, smallblock engines, sanctions,
restrictor plates, body templates, etc.... Suprised they didn't make them run a smog pump..... :barf:
& since the 80s it has never recovered IMO :alan2cents:
even though the nose was angled back there was a ton more frontal area on the Magnum & the back lite would not be clean either .

The Magnum does get a bad rap, but keep in mind the GM boys were not particularly happy with the newer, more angular Monte Carlo, Olds Cutlass, and Buick Centuries. They all complained about high speed stability and poor handling.
Petty led 26 laps at Daytona with the Magnum and it actually was the fastest car in the field that day, before crashing out with a blown tire. A few races later Nascar mandated taller rear spoilers to try and improve stability for the fields. It seemed to help the more angular GM style more than the rounded Magnum. Petty had six top 5 finishes in the Magnum before retiring it for a Monte. He had three top 5 finishes with the Monte that year.
Also relevant was that 1978 was the year Iacocca took over at Chrysler. They were still hemoraging money from the 1976 F body recalls. Lee starting slashing budgets and selling of unprofitable aspects of the company. No doubt they completely pulled the plug on factory sponsorship of race teams and pushed more heavily into the parts supply business of Direct Connection. Despite his success, Petty was loosing funding and needed to align with someone who had deeper pockets.
Petty gave a lot of the Magnum program to the Arringtons, who were reasonably successful with it winning some races, qualifying high in the field, and setting top speed at some races. Eventually the Magnum was retired for the Imperial of the '80s.
Good insight, thanks HP. I remember the Imperials, I guess they were the slickest Chrysler offering in that time frame.

I believe Mr. Petty's favorite racecar was the Gen 3 Charger. He had great success with the 66-67 boxcars but I think that was based on driving skill and brute HP.

OK you guys may have changed my mind from jacked up rear and L60`s to more of a road racer but still want the vintage look. What wheels other tham Minilites were used for road racing back in the `70`s? I want a period correct wheel and I love the Minilites but there is an Orange AAR local to me a friend owns and we already get mistaken for each other a lot when driving and he has Minilites so I need to have something different for wheels.

They're fair. SRs are decent priced, H speed rating, newer carcass. Aren't the grippiest and are still a 2 ply radial sidewall, but better than many other 15" street offerings.

John Sandberg and I have campaigned our cars together for many years... since we met in 1975... autocrossing has been a blast!
At mid-season 1974, Columbia Speedway promoter Don Sharpe dropped the NASCAR sanction in hopes of getting more cars and drivers to compete in the Late Model Sportsman division, and Pete Hamilton showed up in this Dodge "Kit Car" and blistered the competition so badly, that Sharpe asked him not to come back after two weeks of dominance. The car was very much illegal, as well.

He had balls , over 200 in the 88 car , this was incredible , nothing was as fast in 69 , Indy / formula 1 purpose built cars were not running over 200 , even Can Am was a couple of years later touching 200 with Donohue / Porsche .
Hard to believe a basically factory car modified was the fastest race car in 69
I saw a picture of Buddy Drifting high on the bank in the 68/69 charger , should have saved the picture , I cannot find it again now !! running 180+ MPH & sliding :worship:

I agree Buddy was fearless, he broke a few engines but you don't win with a light foot usually.

What is really cool in this video is the 3 lead cars , the mustang & camaro are loose & sliding constantly but they still cannot drive away from the javelin & you never see the javelin sliding around , it is the same where the Challenger is shown , the Camaros behind it are loose where the challenger is just locked to the track !

Ahhh, the Glenn Bunch Hemi powered road race Challenger. I haven't seen that one in a while. While that things has evolved into a full tilt, tube chassis road racer, it started life as a real, steel bodied, street going Challenger.

I thought you all might enjoy a couple of pics of this very rare 1957 Chrysler 300C factory built for NASCAR. It is one of only 17 with
the Holley Carbs & only one of two with an automatic transmission.
I apologize because I cannot remember the mans name for who it was built for, I am sure many of you would recognize it. The car is owned by a good customer/friend of mine Wayne in Texas. I delivered it to him from a restoration shop in Iowa after being there for 9 years!

1970 AMX before and after pictures: Swollen fenders, headlight removal, more pronounced spoiler, missing wipers, more tire...all for the need for speed.
The first pic is a lot different from the second one , the fenders were nto swollen & the scoop was blocked off .

On the Javelin /Donohue picture I don't think they are the same car, roll cage is different, exhaust pipe exits at a different spot.Quarter panels have been reworked, fenders too. I wonder if the first one was a "show" car and not a real race car. Cool to see the subtle differences that add up to big results though. Common trick back in the day for superspeedways was when the car came into pit they would yank on the fender opening in front of the front wheel to make the fender wider. The fender brace behind the fender was made pre bowed so when they pulled on it it ( tire changer) would go straight holding out the fender. ;) I'm told doing that could gain 1-2 mph at speed. During/after the race it doesn't need to pass any template rules! 8)

In the era pictured, these cars were so fabricated that they simply riveted a sheet of steel in front of or behind the headlight area.
I have created and put covers on my Challenger in anticipation of those track days were they might request the headlights be tapped up. No way of easily putting them on without drilling. I limited mine to 2 screws per side, holding .125 thick ABS sheet, painted to match the grill surround. Drill holes are .125 as well, so not hugely obvious, but holes none the less.
I'm sure a creative person could come up with a less invasive attachment method using some clips mounted behind panels. But when the covers are off, you will have these exposed clips visible.

Mainly an account of Neil's 1977 NASCAR season but gives a quick overview of what led him to stock car racing and driving for another of the Alabama Gang, Bobby Allison. I had heard long ago the the last NASCAR event (I was there) at Milwaukee Mile was that the promoter never paid NASCAR. Has not been anything there to speak of since. At this point I'm sure the track surface could use a little Luv... The track is also right in the middle of a heavily populated area. Noise complaints .... very possible by this stage of time

That one got wrecked first time out I think it was. Rebuilt another black/green and it too is sidelined with damages. He is still running the Falcon and a Porsche I believe.

between the distributor location, plug wires angle above exhaust, valve cover pattern & intake bolt angle I believe it to be an LA Mopar
Saw a couple articles On it. I one they said AMC engine parts were to hard to find so they petitioned the sanctioning body for an exception, which was granted. The article said was a Chrysler 360 but another said it was an aftermarket block and heads with no brand affiliation.
I figured it looked like a small block Mopar also .

No, we took it to the MATS in 2012 and I drove it autocross there. Fun car.
Great , Having fun with the cars is what it is all about , I guess trailer queens are fun for some people but driving the H3ll out of them is what it is all about !
Yeah that car was a blast, slant 6 4 spd manual steering and brakes. Definitely a race car but fun to drive nonetheless.

Yea, I think its been at least 17-18 years now. I recall reading over these back during my turn of the century unemployment stretch back in 2002. Its interesting they say "pre-restoration" in all the photos but have never posted any restored photos. The picture of the BRE B210 is somewhat newer as I haven't seen that one before, but I think I quit visiting that site about 10 years ago.

True. Why go bigger and heavier on parts unless needs dictate it.
My uncle has some vintage Pikes Peak Hillclimb parts that paperweights compared to what you would think they should be. The reality is that weight costs power and these cars all have a finite time of operation, so as long as the duty cycle is within that time frame, anything bigger is overkill. In the case of hillclimb parts, they only had to last ten minutes, so why use 1 ton truck parts when econobox parts will be adequate.

Yea I'm really thinking of going that way. My paint job sucks - first home garage job that I made mistakes. Thinking of sanding it down where there is dust and leaving it as is, then having it lettered up. I drive the wheels of this thing so I don't want something I'm afraid to drive

The guy who restored the 1971 Penske Javelin in 2003 made this statement:
" I did the restoration of the 1971 Penske Javelin this year. I ran it at Monterey Historics and that was the first time it had been seen since being parked in 1976. Anyway it came with eleven 8" x 15" Minilites. 4 of those had been originally drilled for 4 lug, plug welded, and redrilled for 5 lug."

I read they changed the rules for the 71 season because on Penske/Donohue. I have a pile of the pictures he posted. Love looking at all the details! The reworked upper control arm mounts etc... Here are a few I have a ton more....

So a buddy wanted the body from my parts car Javelin for a circle track car. He called and said I should come out and have a look. So today I did. It's coming along nicely ! Not a fan of the bar in the middle of the grill , told him it makes it look like a 71 Charger? He replied it was for a "push bar" as the rules say no external bars....

Brad -- T/Anks for posting the Darrel Padberg autocross videos. I've known him since the late 70s and raced with him all through the late 70s-80-90s-early 2000s. I'm certain I raced at some of those same track events that are in the videos (I'm probably in the backgrounds at those same events, or maybe working some of the corners, taking pictures, etc)... many at Milwaukee County Stadium (aka Brewers Field), Portage Indiana Street Gran Prix, other locations. Darrel has been known as having the "fastest hands in autocrossing". He always emphasized to set up the car as stiffly as possibly (next to zero lean/lift/dive) with biggest springs/torsion bars, then use the sway bars as a tuning device... its worked very well for my car and proven the best way way to setup for autocross competition. He progressed from his 71 AMX, to his 70 short wheelbase AMX, then later with the low-cost Ford Mustangs in F/Stock, then C/Prepared. He ultimately departed form the AMC cars because of the rarity and difficulty to find replacement parts (engine parts, suspension, etc), and the attractiveness of the ultra low-cost Ford Mustang ... he has always been a top SCCA Solo II national competitor... In fact, while I was developing my T/A, aiming for the SCCA class E/Street Prepared (also being a highly competitive and very popular national class), with the AMC and Mopars having the same rim bolt pattern, we bought some multiple same sets of Centerline "X-series" 16x10 lightweight racing rims (I still have mine).
Also, fellow SCCA autocrosser John Sandberg, with his C/Prepared AAR 'Cuda, was very actively racing against Darrel's AMX during those same years (mid/late-70s, 80s, 90s, early 2000s. Those were some of the best hey-day years of the rapidly growing popular SCCA SOLO II autocrossing racing throughout North America.

you bet it does Wade! Saw Norm run many times. Hell I even remember the Kilbourn Gardens, it was there for a long time. Norm was another one of the USAC crowd. Back in those days races at "The Mile" were more frequent than they are these days. I'm sure somewhere in the old 'home movies" I've got footage of Norm and Butch running. I'd steal dads Bell & Howell 8mm camera an off to the track I'd go. :stayinlane:

Definitely not photoshopped; they didn't have photoshop back in 1970.. For sure, they put in too much helium to make weight, and some one over filled the tires. It has to be true. This is the interwebs, right??!!

I never though of that. Did they build the superbird for the entire model year? Or was it like the AAR-TA limited time span.
The kinda got away with it , the Daytona used 70 front fenders but was sold as a 69 so it got away with 500 units even tho they only got to about 480 built
The Superbird had to have 2000 built very few were ordered as they were too radical & considered ugly so Mopar pumped 2000 out mostly with few options & low cost , many sat on dealers lots for years or were converted back to regular Road Runners , built mosty at one time as fast as Creative industries could convert them

Right after Chrysler bought them, Jeep/Eagle was trying to make a global presence of their equipment in various small series motorsports. That included the Commanche trucks in the SCCA truk series and the Eagle Talons that were in the World Challenge Series with the Archer Bros, who also raced the SCCA Trans Am Daytonas.
The Cherokee immediately above is from the Grassroots Motorsports Magazine $2013 Challenge. The whole point of that competition is to build a race car for whatever value is the year. They are then judged on appearance, drag strip times, and autocross ability. There are some scary fast and capable vehicles in that series.
I was glad when Dodge brought the Challenger T/A back.

I've always thought the Silver colored 'Cudas were an excellent choice color! I'm pretty sure that picture was taken at IRP (Indpls Raceway Park's road course).
The silver AAR was driven by Sid Rust in the early-mid-70s .. he purchased the Gurney/Savage AAR from the local Indianapolis Goodyear dealer.
A story about this car when it ran at Road America one year... ~early-mid-70s (GT1 class, I believe): A friend of mine was running his ~70 Camaro (GT1 class) in the same class... but he had a very short rear gear ~4.11-4.56 or so... was maxed out running out of RPMs down the fastest stretch... doing about 120 mph... he saw the silver 'Cuda AAR of Sid Rust rapidly approaching from behind early in the race (~first lap or so)... Sid's "Cuda pulled along side of the Camaro... Sid waived at him.. and shifted into 4th gear .. and sped further away from the slow running Camaro. They later talked and laughed about it.... Bye-bye!

The road race AAR/T/A fender flares are purpose-made for the race cars... common of that era.... personally, I've always liked fender flares when done aesthetically.... adds beauty and function! I wish Ma-Mopar would've made the fenders/lips more accommodating to larger tires (perhaps with more radius).

There were several 'silver' colors at that time, some used on e-bodies, and some not. EA4 and EA9 would have been offered in 1970, and in fact several RT/SE's were 999 paint code EA9's. There may be several EA4 examples that exist, one maybe identified as Dick Landy's personal car. Here are two examples, one of each it appears:

GA4 was offered in '71 & '72, and JA5 in '73 & '74 for e-bodies.
Quite a rare color back then, as opposed to today where almost every other car on the road is some form of silver.
My 73 Cuda is definitely JA5, shown on the tag and build sheet. I've seen a couple shades that are supposed to be that, but are slightly different from each other. Could be the lighting I guess. I think this one below is about right, or at least looks like the original paint I've uncovered on mine.
Speaking of flares, they are growing on me a bit.

Can't say that look does much for me. I know it was quite popular with the oval track crowd for a while in some divisions.
