I like '71s, but IMO price is close, but a little high. doesn't mention any bodywork at all and we all know its tough to get AMC parts, there are no repops. the paint job was a BAD BAD job, look closely at the engine compartment and that tells me a lot. no care in how/what was sprayed, so probably shoddy bodywork and quarter panels filled with bondo. the interior is a bit shot and needs a lot of love. :alan2cents:
I'm wanting to build a clone/tribute car of Mark Donohue's trans am race car ( street car) car so paint quality is a non issue. Solid body is what I'm wanting. I'm planning on stripping it down and going on a rotisserie. I've researched about parts and your right they don't exist, tail lights for example IF you can find them go for crazy money .I agree dash is hacked up? Planning a manual transmission..... I have an extra pair of Hyundia seats like I used in my Challenger.... :thinking: Motor would do for now if it's good.... Rear end I'd likely just get another Dana from Cass.... :thinking:
I have the cash sitting here , sticking point is the wife. The Challenger almost caused a divorce when I bought it.... :))

if the body turns out solid than its not a bad buy, I'd still try to get him down to $6k. but solid usable parts are worth a lot, especially if the plan is to do a Donohue clone (which would be seriously kick ass IMO).

This is really good advice. good eye.
The price does not seem bad, not that I have been looking. The other thing you have to consider is how often do these come up. If I had the money I would be having a look at that car.
From the pics and it is really hard to tell from the pics, in addition to
@ec_co (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/ecco_77) 's comments I would be looking at that passage side door...it could just be the pic, but that gap looks really bad. Could indicate something worse.
I am also troubled by the one and only hood spring..is that normal??

Brad, you don't want a divorce. It will cost more that $7000. Rotisserie? Dana from Cass? Hard to find parts? Totally unknown metal work?
You were the first Ebody buddy I made so I like you. Yes I'm no car expert, but I know they are big $$$$ to restore.
If you were buying this car to simply have fun.... I think it's an awesome idea. Restoring this car all the way seems pretty crazy to me. But that's just one opinion. It's not all about money, but these AMCs don't bring back the g's, they don't bring you back the dinero if you have to sell amigo. Then again you seem like you don't care so much about resell and just like to have fun.

I would think a driving complete car has to be worth that , it will cost a fortune ust for a few parts , you could probably part it out for more !
The kickers is making sure the body is solid .
What can I say about divorce you need a hobby the other car is basically done . this is what you & I were meant to do .
I can think of a lot of thing I could or should have that might have prevented my situation but it was not a good situation , divorce costs more than anything I could have done instead for sure .
If you can find a way to move forward without hurting the family I would do it . otherwise you will go nuts will nothing to build , I am ! :alan2cents:

It looks like there is a lift in the shop so I could take better pictures from underneath and also try a test drive to see how strait it drives down the road. I could ask a few questions that you want answered and find out what I can on it's history.
Let me know what your wishes are and I could go as soon as this Saturday.

There is very little in the way of trim parts, body panels, etc,( nos stuff is rare and crazy expensive. I've been looking into parts for this car for a couple years now) mechanical stuff like engines, transmission parts etc... are no problem. Buying a car with all the hard to find trim parts is key for what I want to do with it. I have no intention of a numbers matching type of restoration, just a fun driver . With this car I'd clean up the dash, new carpet, add my other Hyundai seats and drive it. Ian might loose his rims and tires though! :D Then do the wheel well mods like the race car and paint and decal it up, lower it some.... manual transmission down the road... You know me.... can't leave anything " stock" ! :no:
well if it is complete & solid it would make sense to grab it

Well after 6 hours of driving I'm undecided. He is asking 7k and after seeing it in person now way is it worth that. Interior is roasted. He actually cut a hole in a good dash pad to mount a stereo ....IN THE PASSENGER side??? Like you couldn't reach it from the driver seat! :Thud:Needs exhaust, just has scabby tubing with two mufflers that end at the rear end. Floors have some area's that could be fixed with a patch. I could do that myself no biggie. But it has the wrong grill , no biggie as I was planning on the AMX mesh screen grill
( likely make that too) It has a 9" Ford rear end which to some is a minus but to me I could work with that. I've used them many time, actually I'd prefer it over the AMC rear end. Engine seems to run strong, that's a plus, never did drive it though . The paint is horrendous , looks like he used a shop vac to paint it with. :rofl: That also is no biggie as I had planned on stripping it all off anyhow. Firewall and under hood area is super solid. The big ticket items .... the rear tail lights are what you would expect for a 47 year old car, one is cracked but the rest has spider cracking which I'd expect for the age. Bottom line is I'd HAVE to have new tail lights and they are not repopped so big bucks IF you can find them. I highly doubt I'd find a car with really nice tail lights anyhow just due to age.
Rims and tires are junk, well junk to me anyhow but I already have rims and tires to go on it. Body panels seemed pretty solid, fenders were great. Rear quarters ( wheelwells) did have some bondo so I'm sure they will need a patch or two. But then again I had planned on cutting the wheel opening to match the race car and lowering it. Glass all seemed ok. Passenger side door needed adjustment. Owner pointed that out. He showed me pictures of how he bought it ( in primmer) Original owner had passed away, so I can see he is trying to give it a quick spray of paint , get it running and flip it. He said he has 4500 into it. I very nicely pointed out why it's not worth 7 K and he understood. Said well make me an offer then? I siad not trying to insult you but I'd say 4 k maybe 4500. He said he would take it. I was shocked, I figured that would be the end of our conversation. He said he would even deliver it all the way up to Barrie for me for that. I back peddled and said I would think about it on the way home.... He tahn said he had someone else comming to look at it offering 5k certified. No way this car will certify for a safety! :rofl: ( its a project car!) I said well if someone comes with 5k take it, other wise call me if you still have it as I need to think about it more.
So that way my day.... :D

A bit of both.... more so the wife issue and lack of storage at the house till I can build a shop. I'm dying to dive into another project! I'm bored! Challenger is done except for a complete paint job. I'd rather have the Javelin than paint for the Challenger.
The city has taken 15 feet off the front of my yard to widen the road and paid me 40k for the land. That should be enough to build a 25x30 or 25x40 shop..... I haven't received the money yet tied up with lawyers but I know for sure it's coming in the next few weeks ( Lawyer was on holidays)

As much as I'd like to get out of this bankrupt socialist hell hole it would take quite a bit more money and 3 almost adult kids to consider..... maybe retirement buy a place down south for the winter and more sort of a thing? I MIGHT HAVE THE ANSWER! if you want the wife on board with the Jav, tell her that. And ask what it will take to make that happen. Hopefully it is something easy like staining the deck and not a trip to Turks and Caicos or an Hermes bag or whatever the cool chicks do these days.
I try never to give personal advice so this is just my opinion on what I would do in the same situation. Being a responsible family man is a huge priority. If it was me I would make a huge effort into building a proper shop and if another project car right now was pushing my wife's buttons I would back off. One thing I have found in life is that car projects come and go and there is always some cool project coming up better than the last.
40 ft shop for sure! You'll never regret it.
I'm staying out of the car conversation. Good luck with your decision.

:) Thanks but not necessary. I have the money sitting here for the car. The wife is the issue. In her mind I'm lucky to have one car. Which I understand and she is right to a point. But what she is not seeing is one.... this is my passion, it's what I do, second 20 years from now 4 k is going to seem like peanuts. Meaning it is a type of investment. Sure there might be better ways to invest money that give better returns but for me personally looking at a piece of paper with numbers on it that may or may not get bigger every month does not excite me like getting my hands dirty and creating something out of a rusty mess that I get to enjoy and drive . She still see's it as a " car that we don't need" hence my dilemma but still working on her.... I'm not throwing in the towel yet! :D
When I bought the Challenger I won it on E-Bay . My mother had passed away and left me a little nest egg. I paid off the house bought the Suburban and a new travel trailer and with the rest bought the Challenger. I had been bidding on them 99% for entertainment purposes. I'd get outbid in minutes as they would always go for more money than I had. . I had a BB Buick Grand National clone at the time I had built and was looking for parts for it when I stumbled across the Challenger. So I bid on it like I had done with countless others. Well to make a long story short I would come home from work everyday and check E-Bay and I was still the only bidder. I didn't get to excited until the last day of the auction when I was still the only bidder. I watched the timer count down at midnight thinking OK someone please bid on this but I was the winner and only bidder. I was shocked! To make matters seemingly " worse" the car was in Stockton California over 4000KM away. I kinda winced when I told her " ah honey I just bought a car" YOU DID WHAT! was her reply or something similar... She was quite upset that I had bought it with out so much as talking to her about it. I get that.... my bad. :-[ But I really didn't think I had a snowballs chance in hell of getting it.
It could have turned out very badly as I had only seen like 4 pictures of my car. Could have been a rot box or worse ,NOT how any sane person would buy a car for sure! "Someone" was looking out for me! So I paid I think it was $2700 to ship it to me from CA and was very relived when it finally came to find a nice typical rust free CA car. I couldn't get over with just a wrench cracking the original brake lines and replacing the rubber flex lines! 2-3 years around here on a new car and lines are rotted! It could use a trunk pan and drop offs but I'll do that someday..... too busy driving/enjoying it now!
Anyhow .... now you can understand why she is so " not into " this purposed project?

To make matters worse .... I was at a customers on Thursday, mentioned the Javelin and he said "Oh I know where there are 2 more for parts cars, sitting in a barn being stored with my project. The owner sold the Javelin without restoring it and these two are just sitting there" :rubeyes:

Technically Chrysler bought AMC so seeing that at the show would have been cool.

It really depends on what he will take in trade and what size(dozer/excavator). On the smaller end, if he will take used gear it can be from 15-30k.

I have a 68 AMX "GoPak" 390 and have found rare parts for it at Galvin's in Lodi, Ca. They sell used and new parts for AMXs and Javelins. The 68-69 engines were not vin numbered by AMC. I have a " thing" for Trans-Am cars from the 70-71 seasons and am wanting to build a " tribute" car of Mark Donohue 's winning car. Not quite to the detail of Wayne Davis's car :drooling: ( if you have seen it?) but a street version with the same paint scheme . I'd like to go to the Kenosha show someday. I was just there in Kenosha for Drag Week in September. Good to know about the timing covers I built a Buick engine and the designs are similar as is its better to buy a new cover than mess with old worn out junk. I've lots about Gavins! ( all good )

The 401 was available in the Javelin, Matador, and Ambassador car lines and in Jeeps from its introduction in 1971 through 1974. Brad, I have a 1973 Jeep Wagoneer powertrain 360 V8/factory TH400! Very rare! Question is can a 360 be bored and stroked to a 401? I got it to remove the heads and exhaust manifolds to put on my 68 AMX 390 (done). The 360 is a complete engine with all pulleys and accessories minus carb. It was a running engine and I have the compression figures for each cylinder. I had thoughts of replacing the 68 AMX M12 Borg Warner transmission with the Jeep TH400. I've kinda lost interest in the 68 AMX, but we'll see.

Chryco Psycho, I was thinking of my high school buddie's Superformance ac cobra. It has a Windsor 351 bored & stroked to 427. A 390 can be safely bored to .040 over, not sure about the AMC 360. I now wonder what a 360 can be bored to. Maybe it is the old 343 that has been stroked to a 360?
I would have to do some more research but you would need a lot of wall thickness to bore out 40 CI extra when .060 over might gain 8 CI
Stroking is where you really gain the CI
I've read the warranty blocks had really thick cylinder walls and could be bored 360 to 401 same block. But they are more rare than a virgin Hemi block. so good luck in finding one.
" There was also a "Service Replacement" block made as a modified GEN-3 design. This is a 401 casting (same casting number) without the displacement cast into the side and with a 360 bore and thicker deck. In theory this single block could be built as any 343-401 GEN-2 or GEN-3 engine. A dealer could stock one or two blocks to use for warranty replacement.
The main bearing web area was thicker in the 390, 401 and SR blocks, thick enough that two additional bearing cap bolt holes could be drilled and tapped for an aftermarket four bolt main cap, providing a stronger bottom end. AMC never built a factory four bolt main block, they sold aftermarket four bolt main caps through their Group 19 performance parts program.
The SR block also sold as a heavy duty racing block, which is speculated to be the real reason it was produced in the first place. It appeared in 1970 in time for the 1971 Trans-Am racing season, and was used in the factory Trans-Am backed cars prepared by TRACO for Penske Racing, with Mark Donohue the primary driver. Since it was a standard factory part it did not have to be homologated under T/A rules, and was not used in the 2501 "Mark Donohue" Javelins built to homologate the "duck tail" spoiler. Those received standard 360 or 390 engines, buyers choice. The only thing special about the Donohue Javelins were the spoiler and "Mark Donohue" signature decals. That makes it an easy model to clone, and makes it difficult for automobile collectors to identify original vehicles."

If you like it, run this to the end. I'm thinking if they are real sick, Meds can make a person incoherent. Also have seen people on serious meds sleep for days. Could be a scam could be legitimate. Heads up all the way.
The passenger door does not seem to open or close properly. I opened my 68 AMX passenger door to the same spots in the pictures above and my 68 door retains the same door gap top to bottom. Also, there is a long piece of wood pushed up against the seat holding the brake pedal down. Why?
Brake pedal is likely because the parking brake does not work.
Thought about that. Would it not be easier to block a tire or two? Still, the issue with the passenger door needs resolving.

It has a lot of cool AMX parts on it that are hard to come by. Oh I bought my first AMC part today. On a AMC board I belong to I got the reverse lens. :D Told the seller I'll take it and to figure out shipping.

Poor guy I feel bad for him. Rear quarters like our e-bodies is a common rust spot. It's a pretty flat are and easy to make a patch. Quarters are available repop, just not sure how "good" they are?

Sure, that would be great. Don't make a special trip though and the one caveat would be it has to have a title or I can't bring it home. So that is probably a no-go if it's been there forever.

Found it. ;) Big Bad Orange. Its an older one 68-70 has the " breedlove" roof spoiler too. The car covered up beside might be a 71-74 with the humped fenders, hard to tell? Might be a 71 Shaker Cuda too? :D

Brad, I studied the photo and am only slightly convince that AMX has a Breedlove spoiler. It may be a homemade one. Here is a pic or two of a Breedlove spoiler. BTW Breedlove lives about ten miles from me. I walked by his old shop last weekend where he built "Spirit of America" He lives in Rio Vista and I was there for the car show. Here's a pic of him too. I spoke with a docent at the Rio Vista Museum and they plan to include a tribute to him soon.

AMCs are bringing big bucks now. "The Machine" starts at $50,000, Most SC/Ramblers start at $50,000. The 68-70 AMXs range from $30,000 to $60,000. Here is a 1968 AMX with a 343 engine that fetched $51,700 at Mecum...not near original! I do like the "Skunk Stripes" down the hood.

paint/body looks nice. Not real "cozy" with the colours but I had planned on painting what ever I get anyhow..... My biggest concern is it being an Ontario car. I'm thinking/wondering how is it possible it's lasted this long here in Ontario and how solid is it really? Last picture is from it was stripped down for paint. One thing I noticed ( and not a big deal) is the heater core hoses have been looped? Dash needs some cleaning up.
Anyone else see any other issues? More eyes the better?

Seriously though I know it's a pretty good deal considering all the work already done to it. It's the most likely candidate for me so far. More money than I thought I would spend but I'd get more for my money that I would spend anyhow. Only thought is other than paint and a few bolt on's..... it's almost "done" that's the fun part? End of March or April ( when the snow is gone) I'll go look at it in person. It's 3 hours away from me. Wait a moment...Today, I just bought a front bumper ($475.00) for my 68 AMX and a Passenger mirror($288.00). The bumper box has AMD's logo and it says MOPAR Authentic Restoration Products with Chrysler's name on it. Oh, Bulltear Timing cover for 390 ($314.00)..... all the other timing covers are CRAP!

I hear ya, I have bought the rear tail lights NOS, reverse lens , tail light housings, 4 speed pedals, and a mesh AMX grill. :)

True, if it was local I'd buy it. But add in at least 3 grand to ship it to me thats now 5 grand US funds and I'd still have to build a drivetrain complete body and paint, all the trim and interior etc..... the green one money wise is a much better deal. Parts are expensive and hard to get for these cars for sure.

The 1972 Javelin SST could be a clone to look like a State Trooper car. Here's why: the door badge on a '71 was different... it read ALABAMA STATE TROOPER. The door badge on a 1972 read STATE TROOPER ALABAMA. Also, it appears the roof light is a 1971 light. And, ALL 1972 STATE TROOPER ALABAMA cars had "Wellengton" vinyl seats. There are some other subtle differences which require close
inspection. Example, the 71 came with a Borg Warner automatic. The 72 came with a 727 Torque-Command automatic.

Not sure but It's 3 hours away. My thinking is if I'm going to go look at it then if it's in as nice shape as he says then I'll be driving it home. Can't do that yet, too much snow and salt on the roads.

I like it! VIN indicates it is a true 4-spd/360 Javelin. A lot of $$ in the engine. The side pipes look good on it. The technical Service Manual has good illustrations on how to assemble the grill and miscellaneous. The restorers are watching this Javelin and the last minute of the auction should be exciting.....I'll be watching. :popcorn:

I've always liked those cars. We had a '72 Javelin 304/auto with the Pierre Cardin interior back in the late 80's. It needed some love but was a solid car. I think we gave $200 for it and sold it a couple years later for $500 without putting anything in it, just driving it. Had to go to make room for Dad's 36 Ford. That one would be fun to put into period Trans-Am spec.

Problem is the diffence in parts is about the difference in bidding price right now , no 4 spd , no grille , no hood , , it would caost most of the difference just to get the parts the other one included , brad should have gone $1 k more IMO

I was looking at that one too, but interior is a pukey colour , visible damages, says "rust free" but I can clearly see rust , a lot of damaged/trashed parts, etc.... Not the one for me.

The reason the reserve was not met is because there was NO RESERVE. If you go into the archives of sold 1972 Javelins and scroll down the left side it is the first one listed as SOLD at $7,600. That was a great deal for a lucky high bidder.

I figured with the extra cost of dragging it home from the USA, engine rebuild/replace? Then factor in the unknowns like floorboards, hidden rust, whats missing to assemble the car etc. $6700 US was all it was worth to me..... then when I know I can have that green/black one somewhat locally for 15k Canadian.... with a rebuilt 401, running /driving etc... Experience tells me it's all the little things to get a car running/driving at the end of a build that kill ya, not just the body panels and drivetrain.
There will be more.... that's half the fun, "the hunt" :D
Still regret not buying the first one I looked at for $4500 Canadian , delivered to my door :pullinghair:

The newer AMX 4 seaters; the grill reminded me of a Charger 500, or a 70 Challenger minus the recess- though the parking lights to me were over done! The car looked like it needed hide away head lights.

:wrenching: l have a friend who has been restoring his Javlin for 12yrs. now because he can't find anyone who reproduces parts for AMC and the parts he finds they want an arm and a leg.
It is unfortunate that AMX's and Javelin's that need a restoration are worth more in parts than as a whole car. I am the second owner of a 68 AMX 390 "GO PAK" . In the past four years used parts have sky rocketed. I think partly due to eBay pricing of what ever the market will bear mentality on collector car parts.
The guy with the Javelin is making his 12 year + restoration very expensive by taking his time while used parts are going up in quantum leaps. New after market parts have been staying ahead of inflation. And, heaven forbid if you want you want NOS parts. On eBay a NOS t-stat housing is $125.00 and NOS "390" quarter panel emblems are $395.00. I've seen a pair of NOS tail light assemblies sell for $3,500. How much are you willing to pay to take home a trophy at the AMO Nationals?
Wow: Yes I believe that buying stuff ASAP helps keep costs down. 12 years ago the fellow probably could have had the car done for 1/4 of the cost now.
And when you haven't spent enough, Visner Engine Development made fifty billet AMC 401 blocks that can be bored and stroked to 499 cu. in with matching heads for a mere $33,000 ( 45 available). Visner also makes a 426 HEMI.

In lieu of the water jackets there are 18 head bolts instead of 14. This implies must use Visner matching heads.

It's sold now at $5250 but I've seen that one pop up on E-Bay before. I thought about reaching out to member 70RTSE383 as he lives closest but when you factor in shipping costs.... ? I got a couple of quick online quotes for shipping and they came back at around $1500 which seems low. ( Shipped to Buffalo NY) If it was local it would be in my driveway already.

Went to Canepa's website and watched a video of #6 Javelin racing 70 T'A's @ 2012 Coronado Speed Festival. Video shows a lot of foot motion while going through the gears.
I saw two over the weekend. A 69 and a 71 maybe. The 69 is for sale. I've seen it for a couple years on a used car lot. I stopped by to get a closer look on Saturday. It looks good from the street but up close it's pretty rough. The 71 was sitting out infront of a guys house...all in primer. Looked like it was in decent shape though. I thought of Brad both times. No pictures...

It's a 360, wanted a 401 but it will do for now. Lots of little things to do , wiring, carpet etc... but the major stuff is done . Paint is the hardest and most expensive part for me and I'm happy with it as is. Someone etched the quarter glass with a flower design? :drunk: so I'll have to replace them, already have a guy on the AMC forum ready to set me up. I just went to swap out the rims and discovered someone had slipped a Chevy rear end in at some point. Yuck wrong bolt pattern for my rims. I had planned on getting a Dana from Cass anyhow at some point, guess I'll start saving over the winter and see what happens in the spring, weather has turned crappy here so I'll put it away for the winter! I had already bought a t56 for this car so might as well do it all at once and get one driveshaft made

Using " search Tempest" I found it on craigslist in rhinelander wisconsin in the summer. After telling good buddy of mine a couple weeks ago about it and the price drop, he offered to drive down and tow dolly it back for me. 12 hour drive each way, crossed at Sault Saint Marie. Nice drive with the fall colours in full bloom! If it wasn't for Mike I wouldn't have the car. REALLY nice thing he did for me. I think he enjoyed watching me spend money for a change instead of him!LOL . We had a really nice steak dinner at some fancy place the locals suggested. We have gone on many a road trip chasing down parts, but it was always for Mikes cars. This time it was my turn! We had a great time , sure is a " remote" area. Reminds be of Muskoka but almost endless. Nice place to visit but I couldn't live there. Can't figure out what people do there for work to survive?
Guy I bought the car from said he got it from a local "collector" that has over 40 cars! It's going to need a bunch of things, and I posted it on a facebook group for a local Mopar club one guy responded that he knew where a parts car was at for cheap, with a 401 engine etc :fingerscrossed:

I've been buying parts for this car for over a year now. I have NOS tail light assembly, nice AMX mesh grill and 4 speed pedals and a T56 6 speed, so I WAS going to get one "eventually" just a matter of the "right one" at the right time. My 3 sons were at the wife pretty hard at times, so I think she realized it was going to happen. She is hinting at another crusie now. :Thud: :whiteflag:

Dragged home a 73 AMX for a parts car today. New ( not rebuilt) dealer installed 401 with ( seller says?) 5000 miles on it, lots of AMX goodies to sell off , even came with an extra AMX rear spoiler NOS in the wrapper still. I'll use , quarter windows, rear window, door mechanism as mine is wonkie ? maybe rear end ( has AMC 20 rear end) wiper arms, dash parts, console etc.....
Great score I figure I'll sell off a bunch of stuff I don't need and likely double my money and get my parts for free?

Thanks , ya I agree I'm pretty happy with this deal. Can't wait to pull the engine and see if it's a service block or a regular 401 block. Service blocks go for stupid money. I started on pulling the grill tonight but it got dark..... the plastic grill is in great shape( they are usually broken) and it also goes for crazy money and I don't need it for my build. Everything sheet metal is trashed/rusted out no surprise there being an Ontario car. Owner had it since 1978, I sympathized with him as we towed it away . He said it was hard to watch it go.I get that. I told him when I get it all on the road I'll swing by and take him for a spin and that I'll do my best to make every usable part find a home to make others live. He smiled and thought that was great! Gotta love " car people" they are the best!
That's a great find. No way it was ever going back on the road.

I finished work earlier than expected so I started stripping it today. My youngest son helped for a while too. That was fun! Great way for him to learn. I'd think it was a pretty nice looking car when it was new, white with a white vinyl top. Interior is almost completely out , just a little bit more on the dash. ( most of the dash is out, it has the AMX gauges , I'll be selling those as I'll go Speedhut again with this build) Even has a tilt steering column ! I'm thinking I'll call a few guys I know and see if they want the body panels for a circle track car? There is a new series up her called the "Hot Rod series and bodys must be stock steel and I think 76 and older. I think it would be cool to reuse as much as possible. Brad, At this point, I'd say you did FANTASTIC! The 401 forged crankshaft is $1000.00 + itself. The 401 bare blocks start at $500.
BTW, Pretty easy to tell if it is a service block. There will be no cu. in. size on the side of the block...the pad will be somewhat smooth. You probably already knew that. Should be able to tell by putting it on a lift. Great find.
I'm just throwing it out there...but you could easily sell the interior for more then you paid for the car I bet...it looks to be in great shape :drooling: and very rare too :bigmoney:

We had a 72 or 73 Javelin back in 1987 that I bought for $150. 304 engine with Pierre Cardin interior. It was actually a pretty nice car. I sold the car for $400 and kept the front seats for my Dad's 36 Ford coupe project. Owner came back three months later begging for the seats with a real nice set of black ones for exchange, which I was happy to do. Wish I had a warehouse to store all the neat cars we went through.....

You guys are right, I had 2 guys wanting the interior , buyer coming Saturday to pick it up! I'm shocked! Using " search Tempest" I found it on craigslist in rhinelander wisconsin in the summer. After telling good buddy of mine a couple weeks ago about it and the price drop, he offered to drive down and tow dolly it back for me. 12 hour drive each way, crossed at Sault Saint Marie. Nice drive with the fall colours in full bloom! If it wasn't for Mike I wouldn't have the car. REALLY nice thing he did for me. I think he enjoyed watching me spend money for a change instead of him!LOL . We had a really nice steak dinner at some fancy place the locals suggested. We have gone on many a road trip chasing down parts, but it was always for Mikes cars. This time it was my turn! We had a great time , sure is a " remote" area. Reminds be of Muskoka but almost endless. Nice place to visit but I couldn't live there. Can't figure out what people do there for work to survive?
Guy I bought the car from said he got it from a local "collector" that has over 40 cars! It's going to need a bunch of things, and I posted it on a facebook group for a local Mopar club one guy responded that he knew where a parts car was at for cheap, with a 401 engine etc :fingerscrossed:

I've been buying parts for this car for over a year now. I have NOS tail light assembly, nice AMX mesh grill and 4 speed pedals and a T56 6 speed, so I WAS going to get one "eventually" just a matter of the "right one" at the right time. WOW - I have been to Rhinelander WI - TWICE. Nice little town. There is a mill there I think and I went to visit Superior Diesel who sell John Deere diesels for all kinds of applications.

Well, the weather finally broke today , hovering around the freezing mark so I started on my t56 to 401 (AMC ) project out in the garage. Sure felt good to get back out there "making chips" again after a long cold winter. I also ( while the wife was away at work ) got the sending unit mounted in the fuel cell. I had to machine up a spacer/adapter for that also. With the T56 adapter I made drawings like usual , but this time took pictures so I could make it again down the road if someone wanted me to. To often I toss my drawings then someone else says "hey cool, could you make me one" and I can't as the drawing is gone, and part it inaccessible due to being installed.. What I did was found a Jeep bellhousing on ebay for cheap, like $50 if I remember right , the aluminum plate was expensive , wow It's been awhile since I have had to buy material a 13x13x1/2" thick aluminum plate cost me $63 and change? That's nuts! So I set up the bell housing indicated it up , found all the holes and did the same with the mid plate from the t56. Made a drawing and the rest is just simple machining/drilling/tapping. They wanted over a grand for a quicktime adapter bellhousing so I guess I shouldn't whine too much of $60 for the material.

Well the adapter plate is all done. Next I need to replace the input shaft and install the midplate on the transmission, looks pretty straight forward. Gold cad plated grade 8 hardware is 7/16 fine thread
( stock is 8mm metric), aluminum adapter plate is tapped but installed longer bolts so I could also add lock washers and nuts on the other side adding more thread strength as it is just 1/2" aluminum plate Pretty cheap way to adapt a t56 to any stock bellhousing. Material was $65 and hardware was about $30. Priced out a custom bellhousing and it was over $1000 by the time it was in my hands. I've used/worked with quicktime adapter bellhousings in the past and was not all that impressed. warped badly, had to get it blanchard ground flat, and a whole lot of pissing around getting it lined up right.
I'll have to turn up a custom pilot bushing to make up the difference in the 1/2" plate adapter and likely shim up the hyd throwout bearing 1/2" as well. That's the easy part.

No bellhousing is cast, pretty light weight, I'ts from a Jeep application.

Thanks guys for the encouragement. Yesterday while my Internet was/is down I dug into the transmission replacing the input shaft. First time for me doing this job but it went pretty smooth. The camaro I harvested the T56 from uses a shorter input shaft so I bought a kit to swap it out. Comes with a new mid plate, input shaft bearings and shims. I did have to pull it apart 5-6 times to reshim before I got end play correct at .000 to .002" It's all finished sealed up and ready to go now. Next step is to wait till snow goes and drag the parts car from beside the house into the drive way and see if I can get the 401 running. I have a used torker intake coming from a member on the AMC forum from CA. The stock intake /carb has been sitting for too long and is not useable IMO. I have a rebuilt Holley 750 sitting in my parts stash that I'll use for this car. Finally caught some nicer weather ( no rain) and decided today was the day to harvest the Javelin parts car. My middle son Sam helped. We had fun and it was a great learning experience for him getting his hands dirty and learning how things are put together. Hopefully should finish up tomorrow as it's a sunny forecast. Wow 2 days in a row without rain! My buddy who builds circle track cars want the body panels so this parts car will be well used and not much left when we are done. Stripping it out for him to make it easier to skin the panels. Storing all these parts might be an issue, going to sell what I can and use what I need/want. It sure was rotten though. Somewhat scary crawling under it to remove parts, lots of jack stands just in case.
It was kinda funny when the wife got home from work..... the look on her face said volumes. She did say " someone is coming to take that away soon right?" :haha:

I do have the grill and grill screen off this car.The plastic grill tub is darn near perfect but the screen is just a wall hanger/garage art. I do have 2 other screen grills for my car not sure which one I'll be using yet....

I plan on selling the grill as I have a spare but I'm thinking I'll have to pull an "Alan" and say no shipping as they are super fragile and it would be just my luck to ship it, have it arrive in pieces then get stuck for shipping and no grill to sell. By park light do you mean the side markers? If so they repop them at PG classics If he has an AMX they didn't have park lights in the front as they were in the grill. The lower front valance has a plastic vent thing in place of the park/running lights If it's the ones in the grill I'm selling mine with the grill as they are so fragile there is no way I'm going to touch it lol. I'll PM you my cell number though....

Well it totally stripped now and off to the wreckers tomorrow. Kinda makes me laugh, best picked over parts car I have ever seen or done. My friend Peter bought the body panels. I went over to his place today after work and helped him cut off the front clip and cut out the rear end. Those parts are coming back to sell off. Funny this younger guy I know stopped by while we were stripping it and couldn't even tell what car it was. He guessed a Mustang.

Been crazy busy work wise haven't had much time to play. Neil was up here when his Carlisle ride bailed on him last minute. It was great to spend some time together! He showed up just as a guy was there buying extra parts I have. Sold just the plastic grill tub for $1100 in one day on facebook marketplace! He also bought the Go pack gauges for $550, and a few other parts,small stuff. He seemed like a nice guy glad to finally find the parts he needed to finish his car. Best parts car I ever bought, I got a ton of parts for free, including a 5000 mile 401 and I'm "up" about 2 grand and still have a bunch to sell off. Neil installed my new lock cylinder in the parts cars steering column as I'll use it rather than the one in the car now as its a tilt column. Sanded it down , cleaned years of grime off it and painted it. Looked pretty good when we were done!
I tore the 401 right down a few weeks ago, and it still has the cross hatching in the bores so seller was telling the truth! Plan is to install new rings and bearings, valve job, a new modern cam and assemble. Not going to get "silly/carried away" with this engine like I did the Challenger. Or so I think.... so far thats the plan anyhow?

Finally got a slow day business wise, weather was perfect so I fired up the javelin and moved it into the drive way, Installed new front rotors. Man were they pricey, only one manufacturer making them I was told? Previous owner installed new calipers, pads and flex lines but left the rotted junk rotors?WHY? Ran out of money I guess? So finished that up, gave her a bath as it was pretty dirty from siting all winter. Still has BFG T/A's on the back so I couldn't help myself and proceeded to do a so so burnout. Easy to do with those tires ::) Nice smoke show, then it stalled, fired right up again but heard this funny noise. I think the transmission let go! Sounds like squirrels lefts nuts in the bell-housing :rofl: Now I'm laughing because it's going to be replaced with a T56 6 speed asap. I have no idea what automatic it is , when I bought it the seller was going on about it has a rare desirable transmission? :notsure:, something else for the scrap guy now! :haha: Good to find all the weak spots right away I figure! :wrenching:

Alum BH, cast iron center case, and alum tail housing. An article in Car Craft magazine stated the M12 only uses 25 hp, TH400 uses 44 hp, the Chrysler 727 uses 45 hp. and the Ford C6 uses 55-60 hp.

Spent the afternoon at my buddys shop ( he builds circle track engines) finishing tearing down the 401 from the parts car. Wow did I ever luck out with this one. Engine is like new inside, bearings have the amc logo on them. Just going to ball hone/re-ring and new bearings and assemble with a new camshaft and a valve job. Spent most of the time bead blasting parts and wire wheeling the block getting ready for paint.Should be a relatively cheap engine ? Now researching how long Lunati will take to make me a hyd roller..... :tool:

I sat back and looked at the mess for awhile..... measured a few things , came up with a plan,then went to the steel store.
I figured a 1 1/2" x 3" would fit perfectly in there and make it twice as strong as original. I was wanting to make up some subframe connectors anyhow. As luck/divine intervention would have it they had exactly what I wanted at the steel supply and in .062 " wall stock, so it wasn't too heavy , still thicker than original and I got the last 2 pieces they had in stock. :D I drilled holes from the bottom of the rocker panel to plug weld to the square tubing and cut along the floor to fit. Most of the floor I welded right back onto the new tubing. It's like it was made for it. I just need to bend up some sheet metal on a 45 deg angle to weld to the inner body and pinch weld that the rocker sills cover. When I'm done it shouldn't be visible that it's even in there. Me not being able to leave well enough alone then cut out under the back seat to get into the structure behind the leaf spring mounts . I'm not gonna lie , these cars are not made from very thick material. . So I made up some pieces out of .073" plate and welded them into the " torque box" again making it at least twice as strong as the original design. I thought about making bolt in Mopar spring hangers but didn't. . Tomorrow maybe I'll tackle the front area to tie in the front frame to my new frame rails . Shouldn't be too hard to do.
Funny at first I was sort of bumed out with the mess but as it turns out I think even if it was mint in this area I'd still cut it out to do this mod but I wouldn't have thought about it if I didn't have to do something.. Should make a big difference in torsional rigidity! :bradsthumb: It WILL be better when I've had my way with it! Can't wait to dive into the front suspension!

I also moved the seat belt mounting hole back about 2" as I always seem to need to move the seats back to get comfortable..... back seat will be useless as with most muscle cars of this era . I might not even put it back in, haven't decided yet?

Engine assembly is going pretty good! Should be finished by next week. A long time buddy owns a shop that builds mainly race engines. He wasn't really to fond of AMC's but he said since it was me he would help me out. He gave me a shopping list , so I did all the leg work and he does most of the assy for me.
I wish you a lot of luck with a guy who is not fond of AMCs.

:D He has built a lot of them over the years, what he hates is finding parts for hard to find engines. He likes me because I source my own stuff and custom machine what ever I can't find or need to modify. With this one being a hyd roller it needed some type of thrust plate/bearing. I came up with a Chevy thrust plate, machined the timing gear sprocket to accept the Chevy plate. Took a few hours to machine everything up and minutes to assemble. He likes that sort of thing. Work is picking up for me again, so having trouble finding time for the engine assembly. Cylinder heads should be done next week, valves ground, head machined, I did a little pocket porting, nothing to crazy just smoothed things out after machining. Picture of the custom ground hyd roller cam card I had made.
Not a whole lot a machinist ca do to improve 401 heads. I Gave the former cylinder head foreman at Valley Head Service, North Ridge, Ca. the go ahead to do the "Full Monte" to my 401 Cylinder heads. When I picked the heads up he said AMC did a great job engineering the heads and their wasn't much more he could do. Still, with new valves, seals, springs, machining, etc. it wasn't cheap.

Went to assemble the springs on the heads when I discovered 1 retainer was wrong, didn't match. Called Bullet cams and they are mailing me a replacement, so we wait..... Installed spring height was short by .040" and my buddy didn't have the right spring seat cutter so I rushed home and made one out of another one he did have . Worked great. All cut and waiting for that 1 retainer....

Brad, I installed 090 heads on my 68 AMX 390. The 090 heads lowered the compression from 10.25:1 to 9.6:1. The highest octane gas at the pump in Ca is 91. Cast iron heads don't do well on 91 octane engines with 10.25 compression. They actually flow a wee bit better than the high compression heads (291s) because the 090's combustion chamber is larger and there is less valve shrouding, and no pinging or detonation.

I am not part of the forum. Just popped in to look based on your question. Although I have always had a soft spot for AMC. 69 Rambler was my first car and always dreamed of cloning it into a Scrambler.

Finally got a nice day with no rain to work on the car. I'm working in the driveway. I got just one side done . Tied the front subframe into the square tubing frame rails I inserted earlier. Used 2x4 square tubing sunk it into the subframe and inch or so , still need to weld it some from underneath. I'll get to that latter. Should be much stronger than stock. :bradsthumb:
The missing valve retainer showed up this week too! Bullet cams shipped me one no charge. So if I get a rainy day and some time next week I can finish assembling the motor. Won't be long till the weather turns and ends the "Javelin season" Did I mention I hate living here! Still have a bunch of sub assemblies I can work on all winter. I'm hoping to have in finished in time for Carlisle? But it is the 50th for the Challenger so I should take that I guess.

Thanks ! I'm in Barrie, Ontario. We are in what they call a snow belt. About 20 minutes down the road south from here it often is like a line where when it snows we get dumped on and 20 minutes away nothing or very little. Good place to live if you like to ski.

Looks like from October to the end of April, little chilly/frozen. Summer looks very nice, actually you have 5 nice months of "warm" weather.

Not much new, pushrods came in today so I just set them in place with the rockers.... starting to look like an engine!
Found a couple hours today to work on the engine. Got the valves all adjusted, intake bolted down , frost plugs installed,and filled it up with oil 9 quarts.... Maybe tomorrow I'll get time to prime it and bolt on the valve covers and its done!

Back in the early 70's a college friend of mine owned a real 69 Rambler SCrambler. 390 4 sp. dam that thing was fast. He took on my first Challenger RT 383 and left me in the dust. Hard to beat a lite car like a Rambler Rogue w a large displacement engine. He sold it in the 1980's for $2500. I bet he wishes he had it now! :stayinlane:

I'm using the same alternator and power steering pump as I used on the Challenger as I have spares , so it's nice/easier that both cars use the same parts.

Well with it being 50 degrees here today I played around in the garage today whittling out some parts for the Javelin. I bought upper and lower arms from Arizona and glass beaded them. They looked like new, nice starting out with rust free parts to play with! I bought mono balls from QA1 and made the lower control arms able to move for more caster ( I'm also making an adjustable strut rod) without binding the stock bushing. Mono balls were about the same price as new bushings. Then after looking around and various "parts stashes" from other past projects I figured out that the Dodge ball joint tapers were the same as the Javelin, I already had all 4 I needed in stock so I bought the threaded sleeves . They were like 10 bucks each. Cheaper than buying AMC ball joints and it also gives me the option to play around with different pin lengths ( Howe circle track ball joints) Also thinking " down the road" the Dodge ball joints will always be available, the AMC stuff , maybe not so much? I also plan on making plates to box in the lower control arms. Get to use my dimple dies again!
On my Javelin the upper control arm is fixed , mounted in holes in the strut tower. After thinking about it if needed I can slot the holes and weld in serrated mounting plates so they can be adjustable if needed. I found plates from a BMW kit needed when lowering the car. I noticed after looking at pictures of the bare sandblasted chassis on the Penske Javelin race car being restored, that they moved those upper mounts .( I wonder if that was "legal " back then rule wise? I think I can accomplish the same thing using longer pins in the ball joints. Something they didn't have the option of doing way back then as those parts were not available yet.
Goal is to be able to adjust everything to be able to optimize the geometry . All the cars back then didn't have enough caster with the factory set ups. And bump steer is usually horrible?
Then in keeping with the "use up parts" I have laying around from other projects I have a Flaming river rack ( Mustand based) . I discovered when doing some measuring that the length of the rack is just about percent for a Javelin geometry wise! The steering box in the car leaks so it needs replacing.... and I already have the rack so.... It's also much lighter than the stock steering box, center link and tierod assy. Weight off the nose is always a good thing! Looking around further I discovered I had some circle track double spline sway bars and arms , so I'll use them up too! Make changing different rates very easy.

I found when researching the possibility of using a rack instead of a steering box that the lowly AMC Pacer used a rack. The replacement racks for a Pacer are stupid money as I guess they are going obsolete? But what attracted me was that the Pacer utilized unique steering arms that will bolt right up to any AMC spindle. Try and find a Pacer these days..... not very plentiful( for good reason LOL) So after searching around on the internet same AMC guy in Arizona had a pair so I bought them. They are straight instead of curved like the stock arms for a steering box car. I also found a company called Argo that reproduces the Pacer steering arm , and the 2 piece spindle for the circle track crowd ( I never knew anything AMC is used/prized with circle track racers?), So I also ordered the Argo Pacer steering arms. They don't use a taper like the stock AMC part but are drilled for a bolt and rod end common on circle track stuff. So I have options when dialing out the bumpsteer.
Bottom picture is all three steering arms , curved one is stock Javelin.
Also bought a street rod type wiring kit to rewire the entire car. I'm not messing with butchered 50 year old stock wiring. Neil has offered to do that job when he flys in for Carlisle! I'm grateful as wiring is so not my thing... :woohoo: Neil just gives me a " shopping list" and I'll have it all here for him when he comes! Thanks Neil! :wave:
Cool stuff as always. Working in parts the last 2 years it's surprising the cars you can't get simple things like ball joints and idler arms for. Good on you thinking ahead. I don't know how many guys called me saying they had an old Thunderbird, first thing I would ask is "looking for a center link right" I was usually right. Even some of the GM stuff is getting scarce.

Well with more that usual time on my hands these days I've gotten a few things done.
I made a lower control arm brace and got them welded on ground down and painted. . Made a monoball bushing and also got them welded in. On the T56 I think I finally have the hyd slave figured out. Tried a GM one but it was too short . Mopar ended up saving the day as a Viper slave ended up being a winner. I have it all plumbed up and ready to install. Just waiting on flywheel bolts. The screw in Dodge ball joints will work nicely ! A little tip if your welding in the Chrysler screw in ball joint sleeves , use a tailpipe expander to keep it from distorting when welding. Otherwise chances are you'll never be able to screw it in. Do you welding , then leave it to cool off completely and it won't distort. The screw in nice just as they should !
Went to visit an old buddy today. Yes we stayed at least 6 feet apart! He made great use of the parts car body I sold him. All ready for the track now! Next car up for building is a Corvair. He sure works quick for 72 years old! Typical Dutchman! :)

I had a few hours after lunch today, so I started on the fuel cell mounts. Cut up and welded some material. Ran out of gas for the mig welder right before dinner. I hopefully get some tomorrow.
I'm using this fuel cell. It's actually for a Jeep but will fit nicely in the Javelin . 32 gallons, should make the drive to Carlisle much easier!

Good powder coat is usually more durable than a decent paint job. I would PC if you can get it done without jumping through too many hoops or $$.

Moving right along, this afternoon I built rack mounts on my spare crossmember. The one in the car now is bent so I'll be using this one when I install the rebuilt 401 . Went pretty smooth. I figure I'll have to mill down the rack pillow blocks about 1/2" to get the rack at the right height. I'll wait till it's installed to see whats up.... Funny once you have dimple dies you always seem to find more uses for them!
Slowly running out of sub-assemblies to work on. Hopefully soon I'll pull the engine and swap in the rebuilt one with the T56. Lots to do then as I want to paint the engine bay when I do. In the future I'll get coil overs for the front end. Gotta get it running and driving first, priorities....
Got home early so I put up the crossmember on the mill. I was surprised to see only one hole was out of position by about .030"-.040" fore and aft so while it was all indicated on the mill I made all the holes perfect and from welding it moved on one side about .070" up and down so I took this opportunity to machine it in perfect position . The "dimples" are the rack center line and the lower control arm center lines , just in case I need them for set up? While it was all set up I slotted the mounting holes part way thru just in case I need to move it when it's in the car. I can easily finish the slots with a carbine burr if necessary.
Is it worth the effort to try and adapt a R&P like that to an E-body? I've seen them from time to time used for what seem to be reasonable prices <$100. Probably a big tear up or a custom K-frame but it might be fun if it is worth the effort for steering feel and performance.
The rack could be adapted at the rear of the k frame under the engine but putting in front the is a problem , the lower ball joint is the steering arm , this creates the wrong ackerman angles if you reverse them & point them forward .

For Front steer, You would need a spindle with the proper steering arm geometry for a rack . As luck would have it the Pacer was factory equipped with a rack and the steering arms from the pacer bolt on to the Javelin spindle.
I don't know the dimensions/specs for the DSE but a spindle like this with a bolt on steering arm would be nice. Something like this.....
They do make rear steer racks too.

Thanks, when I got this car no one made a new stock gas tank for it , fuel cell goes with the race theme and I'll like the extra range of 32 gallons. I watched rusty old gas tanks sell for 350 USD and was having zero part in that nonsense. I have the original tank here still to sell off. No way I was interested in using it I just know it will be full of crap/rust after almost 50 years. Not to mention dealing with finding a stock sending unit etc..... modern easily available parts were attractive to me.
Worked on it today for a few hours. This is a good illustration on why you shouldn't use air shocks.
I cut out the rest of the trunk floor as I'll have to replace it anyhow due to air shock damages. Not a big deal at this point. I knew this was damaged and I cut out what I needed from the parts car before I scrapped it. Now with the floor cut right out I'll build a area for the battery to mount.

I got to spend most of the day working on it again. Got the front cross member powder coated black. Looks ok. Almost finished the fab work in the back now. Almost got finished but ran out of gas for the mig welder. I'll get some tomorrow and finish it up. I bought a small box/pan brake worked really well for the tin work around the fuel cell.
Very nice. Have enjoyed my brake. Made a couple fan shrouds already.

Test fit the fuel cell today for the first time. When I went to slide it in it wouldn't go and I had that old sicking feeling of " oh crap!" but it turned out I just had to unbolt and remove the trunk latch hook. Phew! It fit and looks pretty good in there! I had the day off yesterday and today to work on it! Fantastic weather to work , not too hot. :cooldance:

It's a relatively new series called the " Hot rod series" . It's a historical or vintage series. Newer chassis with older bodies. It's generated a lot of interest and gotten a bunch of people back into racing again. It's kinda nice/refreshing to be able to tell what kind of car it is without looking for a decal on a rubber nosecone! Actual " stock car" racing! What a concept huh? :D

Well I'd had enough of welding, fabricating, and sanding . Worked up the courage to try my hand at painting . I'm quite happy/surprised at the results. It's just light grey tremclad paint, some reducer and hardener and a $30 Princess auto paint gun. My first time painting worked out pretty good! :woohoo:

Final installation. Just need to make a fuel hose adapter 2 1/4" 45 deg elbow to 2 1/2" to connect the two hoses. Fuel filler cap is not "authentic" to Donohue's car but I felt it was a good compromise for a street car. Donohue's car had the Fuel filler out at the back I didn't want to carve up the spoiler trunk lid etc....
The Cobra style fuel filler cap is somewhat period correct for Trans Am race cars and I like the look of it so...

This afternoon it was " out with the old" day for the front suspension. Previous owners hack job will end up in the scrap pile. The crossmember got hit and badly bent along with the lower control arm and a cracked upper control arm. So to "half ass it" he lengthens the strut rod by welding in a spacer?
Man I just could never do that? Like why? Go get the required parts and replace them? Sheesh huh?
Lucky for me I already have Arizona rust free parts to go back on and the crossmember from the parts car. I'm also going to use a rod end and do away with those goofy strut rod bushings and make my strut rods adjustable. I previously installed mono balls in the lower control arms instead of bushings so I will be able to adjust the front end how I want. Looking at where the stock steering box and idler arms bolts in I think I'll utilize those holes to mount the stock car double ended splined sway bar. Making it a bolt in deal, allowing it to be brought back to stock if desired down the road. I was somewhat worried the frame railed would go boing and not allow me to bolt in my replacement crossmember but it was all good!
It was a great day today for working , nice and cool. I enjoyed the day! Nice to progress and finally be able to bolt parts back on. Next summer should be fun!

Finished up work early and got 5 hours in before dark beat me. Assembled one strut rod,( waiting for bolts to arrive) looks good, had to shorten the turnbuckle . Looks good and should work great!
I got ambitious and cut out the rad saddle as someone before looks like they tried to jack on it. Bad idea, just flimsy sheet metal. I cut it out and replaced it with square tubing, much stronger than stock. Also notched the frame rail to accommodate the 31" rad . Easy enough to do, used .070" material as little heavier than the stock .062" Test fit rad, looks good. I'm now adding a "X" to the rad saddle area as the real race car did this also. Should add to the stiffness .
Finished up the crossbrace before dinner.
Going after this look..... I'm planning on selling off the stock grill as the race car never used one. I'll make up some filler panels out of aluminum instead. I got $1700 for the last one I sold. This one needs some repair so I don't expect as much.
Here is a picture of the real race car stripped down before it was restored. A few "war wounds" are visible. Looks like they brazed on parts instead of welding?

I like the idea of that cross brace up front. With the addition of the square tube across the bottom, that should really stiffen up the front end. Something similar should be effective on our E-bodies, I would think.

Well 3 races in and it's not wadded up yet!
With wanting to lower it some and of course bigger/wider tires. I noticed on one side of the inner fender the wheel rubbed due to the battery mount, so I cut that out for more clearance and welded in a panel. Battery will move to the trunk.
Today working on the Javelin. I keep finding issues with the previous owners workmanship. This was horrible. Amazing I got the car home from Wisconsin without the hood flying up. This is what was holding the hood on. Nut was hanging on by a sliver of .045" material. Can you imagine blasting down the highway or race track at full song and this was all that was keeping the hood from flying up. Never trust anyone else's work. I made these inserts and welded them in. Plug welded also on the sides. Do it right or don't do it all. Now I'll need new hood pins..... I think I'll use the stainless E-body ones , same as my Challenger.
I spend time on this everyday but nothing picture worthy . Spent some time wire wheeling off some undercoating. ( What a horrible job!) and also wire wheeling off paint in the engine bay. Welding up a crazy amount of holes from clips for wiring , some not used etc... I've ordered front coil overs via QA1 and a A/C condenser from vintage air (so I can finish off the rad mounts) . I ordered material to turn up some shafts to mount the coil overs but I figured it was easier to "harvest" the shafts out of the stock spring saddles and turn them down slightly to fit the coil overs. Went to Princesses Auto
( much the same as Harbor Freight in the USA) and bought some 3/4" shaft collars to keep the coilovers from walking around. Cheaper than making them.... Stuck waiting a week or 2 for parts. Lots of other things to keep me busy though. Today I also stripped off the paint from the hood hinge assy and primed it. Not the easiest thing to do on the hood springs. Boring tedious and dirty but needs to be done!
Today's additions to the Kenosha hot rod. Strut rod. This should help to take the twist out of it. I'll wait to drill the holes for the strut tower bar after engine goes in to give me some wiggle room. Also filled in a bunch of holes from wiring looms etc... Next up rad mounts.... The AC condenser came in! :bradsthumb:

I now need to order new leaf springs, u-bolts etc... My good buddy Mike ( who with a little help , just joined the forum today "CudaKidd" ) is returning it back to original ....340 billboard car. So I got to buy the S60 Dana. :banana:
Only took us 2 hours to pull the Dana, take out the DrDiff offset kit and install the original 8 3/4 back in.
Coilovers came in this week too! Time to get busy now before the weather gets cold....

Installed the coil overs this afternoon. Also went with 70 E-Body calipers. Cheaper and easier to get now and in the future and has a bigger piston . Found/bought some stainless braided lines with banjo fittings that were listed for a Chevy that will work perfect. They should also work great on our E-Bodies as well. :alan2cents:

Todays progress. Made mounts for the A/C condenser then removed the Chevy rear end . That fought me some removing the leaf springs, had to cut one of the mounting bolts and one shackle .Need to source new ones. Getting quite a scrap pile, need to make a call and get it taken away. Plan is to install the Dana next weekend. I ordered new leaf springs, said they will be in on Thursday. Gotta get moving, weather is turning.....

I have no idea why the GM rear end? It's what was available I guess? The guy I bought it from said it was a 3:73 posi? I'd guess from a camaro or S-10. Mind you even if it had the AMC rear end I'd still be changing it. AMC rear ends are kinda goofy in that they had a hub that was held onto the axle with a big nut and a type of wooddruff key . :no:
Now my minilite style wheels will fit.

I've seen those. Used often in circle track but I'd rather use the stock type shackles . This car is already going to be a magnet for law enforcement/MTO I'd rather not give them more to be concerned over LOL
AMC model 20 rear ends aren't the most performance oriented because, like Brad said, it has a single nut holding the axle and hub together. GM rear ends are plentiful and inexpensive to build out.
Had a couple hours today to spend on the Javelin so I went over to my buddy Mikes place and installed the new stainless diff cover and my 10" drums that were on the Challenger when I bought it. I picked up new leaf springs today and shackles from a B-body Mopar ( they will work in the Javelin also) I sure like Mike's Charger! He has very good taste in cars! :yes: Plan is to install the rear end on Saturday, should go quick.
Well its in for good . FYI a 67-70 Chrysler B-Body rear end will bolt right into a 71-74 Javelin with zero modifications . Maybe u-joint /driveshaft issues? but I'm getting a new drive shaft anyhow so it's a non issue in this case
Mike and a I installed it in about an hour along with new leaf springs and shackles . Only hiccup was the locating hole for the drum brakes needed to be opened up .050" thou or so to fit on the Strange S60 locating boss on the axel. I was happy/surprised also that the stock E-Body
e- brake cables bolted right into the stock set up from AMC. Nice when things go easy and you get to reuse/recycle parts! New leaf springs kinda disappointed me in that the bushing was about .160" to narrow on each side, making it sloppy fitting. I quickly turned up a washer/spacer. I'm glad to have the lathe and mill in my garage, sure comes in handy! Seems like all resto parts have issues not just Mopar stuff..... :pullinghair:
That looks great. I like to build things to accept factory type parts as well. For instance you can throw a stock 8 3/4 in there anytime you choose with no fabbing at all.

Well it was just over 50 degs here today , so I sprayed the engine bay. Turned out ok got a few runs but mehh its and engine bay. Now I have no excuses to not work on it. Running new brakes lines next that I got from Inline tube. They made a kit to do the whole car . Then I guess its engine install time. That will be nice as it will free up some space in my garage.
Not much progress to report, been super busy with work and it's cold now . Which kinda zaps my enthusiasm. I had to order another brake line kit from inline tube as apparently I have a drum brake kit on the car now? Brakes worked great but what ever.... so I have the new kit , still had to modify a couple lines. Latest piece of the puzzle is new Speedhut gauges. Just signed off on the art work just now. Should be real nice, kinda pumped to get them installed!
I was going for a stock AMX gauge look as much as possible . I think they came out pretty well! Here are the artwork proofs and OEM AMX gauges...

The gauges look great. Like the direction of the needle sweeps on the four clustered gauges. Also prefer the elimination of the clock in the tach gauge. :ohyeah:

I haven't been able to do much, crazy busy with work and too cold outside at the moment so nothing more new to photograph. Pictures of the car are on page 17 of this thread when I first brought it home, still looks the same except for I changed the rims to the ones you were using.

Man snow sure went quick about 3 feet in a few days! So today it was pretty warm so I pushed it out of the garage , pulled the dash, pedals, steering column and heater box . I then test fitted the clutch pedal set up and it fits good. Next is the Vintage Air , shoe horning that under the dash will require some "cutting and pasting" I'll have to cut out part of the firewall and box it in to fit it as Javelin dashes are very narrow on the passenger side goes down to 6" at one point. Also adding a M/C for a hyd clutch set up . Had to vacate the original fuse box and all the plug in's from the firewall to do it but the wiring is a mess and needs all to be replaced anyhow. Most of the connector plugs were so brittle they broke apart when I tried to unplug them. Going with a simple " hotrod" type modern fuse box and wiring kit , cheap and easy....

In high school a friend of mine had a Javelin (don't remember the year), that pic of the dash reminded me of how curved the speedo was. Cool.
We had a Pierre Cardin edition we got for my dad about 1986 for $150. It was a real beauty. Still a fun car though.
I was hovering around the freezing mark today so I decided to fiddle with the gauges today. Was pretty easy/straightforward really . Just some aluminum sheet metal I had in stock and about 4-5 hours later all done except for painting. I'll do that when it gets warmer..... It was easier/quicker having a mill but anyone could have done the same with a jigsaw and a die grinder.
The machined turned dash parts I got From the parts car I had parted out . Nice score!

Todays mayhem.... install Hyundai Tiburon seats in the Javelin. Kinda fought me for a bit, floor has various angles to deal with but I got it done. Had to cut off all the mounts and build new ones. Moved them back about 3" from stock as I find most cars never have the seats going back far enough for me. I have the same seats in the Challenger as well. I had these sitting in the basement for spare parts, so might as well use them .No electronics to go bad, very adjustable, lumbar even, hold you in position quite well, and light weight. Wish I could find another pair....
Yesterday was drivetrain install day. " Just keep cutting till it fits!" :)) T56 wasn't exactly plug and play. I'll build it back stronger! 8) The T56 sure is a long transmission! Shifter came thru in a ok spot, considering I moved the seats back already.
just got this in today.... humped fenders .... humped console.... not sitting in correct spot yet of course ... just wanted to see how it will look. Plan is to remove the black part where the shifter comes thru, get out the english wheel and make an aluminum part to replace it/blend into stock dash. then cover it with a machine turned overlay to match the dash. I got a E-body pistol grip shifter from Alan a few years back that I'm going to use, Also planning to use the stock shifter boot from e-body as well.
Console is from a 08-17 AUDI A5. Spent some time on ebay looking at lots of consoles trying to find one that will work. I think this one will do nicely ! After all, a guy must have cup holders don't ya know! Leather arm rest slides forward covering the first cup holder so lots of adjustment.
Finally had a few hours today to work on it. Today I made the power steering pump mount. Next up is the A/C and alternator brackets. Started with the easy one first. :D

I think the milling machine it is mounted on probably functions as the X-Y cross slide? You wouldn't want to attempt that corner rounding on a drill press.

Yes, but mill x - y moves only increase the milled radius.
Arch on all milled pieces with this method is spun off centerline of the rotary table. Cross slide on rotary table allows to fine tune the location of the mounted part relative to its necessary centerline.
I'm old.... Still have a book that provides movements to step off concave and convex curves. IE make a bowl.

No , just the Bridgeport its mounted on. "Oldschool" comments make me feel old HAHA . I also have a dividing head, 2 of them actually. I also have a wohlhaupter facing / boring head in R8. That is a pretty cool tool to use. Bought it for machining an oil groove in the front cam bearing in my 455 Buick block when I was playing with Buicks. I wasn't dealing with all those goofy external oil feed lines to feed the lifters on the one side.
CNC would be nice but for what I do this works out ok. Could never me competitive if I was charging for this stuff but my own junk I find it a nice diversion/relaxing somehow. I got laid off once and at one point I used to make a living with this stuff making parts for circle track, hotrods and custom bikes at one point here out of my garage but tough to charge for your time
I like old school. I'm an engineer in the machine automation industry and am programming servo drives all the time to automate manufacturing systems. But I have lost interest in converting my lathes and 1939 Index mill to CNC. Sometimes it is faster to just turn the handles. Most of what I do is one-off so writing the code would take longer. That attitude may change when I retired soon and have a little more time available. I did put a servo on a rotary table for one of our show demos, that was fun little exercise.
Yea my days of CNC has passed. All relegated now to the home shop like yours. Opened my toolbox at work the other day. First time in about a year...
This was my last hurrah piece.
Squeezed it in after hours when running the shop at my last job.
Today was such a nice day so instead of building more of the accessory brackets , (I thought I'd save that for a rainy day. ) I pushed it out of the garage and finished up the transmission crossmember modifications to suit the T56. So its all bolted down for good now I hope . I then bolted on the shifter and boot ( they look familiar somehow? LOL) and I was shocked.... I do not need to trim the console at all it fits the floor perfectly! :unbelievable: Even the shifter and boot fit the hole perfect! I was shocked! Next I guess will be getting out the english wheel and making a new transmission tunnel .

HAHA Way to keep me on my toes. I took this picture while I was fine tuning the length of the spacer so I didn't bottom out on the engine block. I did turn up a spacer but in the end used just one regular grade 8 washer. :bradsthumb:
What screwed me up was the pulley was off ( machined incorrectly for dual A/C belts ) So I pulled out my spare alternator and had to adjust the spacer . I contacted the manufacturer and they want me to pay $30 plus shipping for another ( correctly machined pulley?) I haven't responded yet, thinking ummm ya right boys I have 3 of your alternators one of the pulleys was machined wrong .... I've already paid your for the correct pulley! Why should I have to pay again? Not the end of the world I'm sure if I ever needed my spare I could swap over the pullies . While for the Javelin I don't " need" this much alternator capacity I'm using the same power steering pump and alternator on both the Challenger and the Javelin, so I'll only need one spare to suit both cars.
It has been a busy July for me business wise ( unexpectant ) so I haven't had much time for the Javelin. Today I got to work on it and welded in the tranny hump I made for the T56
I had the afternoon to work on it today. Lots of welding and grinding . Got to use my dimple dies again and made a seat brace for the floor. That sure stiffened things up with little weight gain. Got it painted also. Tremclad and a brush.... Just a garage build, nothing too fancy here.

Well at some point it will get covered with carpet so its fine with me.Keeps it from rusting -main goal. I'll do the bottom same way. Funny I have a buddy that used to paint his street stock circle track cars with tremclad and a roller/brush. He would " color sand" it then buff it and it looked pretty darn good for the intended purpose and easy to touch up after Saturday nights " festivities" HAHA I would have never known it was not sprayed if he didn't tell me.
That car must, in it's own automotive fashion, give thanks everyday that it came into your hands Brad. Your can-do attitude and amazing machinist abilities never cease to amaze me and your sense of where this car is going, also impresses. The cross member, or whatever it is close to where your heel would be when driving. Is that a modification or just how javelin floor pans are?
Seems like an odd place for a bump in the floor.
I really like watching your progress on this. I'm not an originality kind of hobbyist, so watching it get built 'as you want to build it' is cool.

Yes, I added that, it ties into the square tubing I sunk into the rocker. Basically its a full frame car now as the square tubing in the rockers is tied into the front subframe and the rear torque box/subframe . I plan on doing something with aluminum and dimple dies to rest my feet on so that lower part up front won't be an issue. A " skid plate" of sorts....
Well now that the tranny tunnel is finished, I put the seats back in, and set the console in place. I need to mount the console yet.
Today was fitting the vintage air Gen-IV Magnum A\C unit in the Javelin . The empty case for mock up comes in handy. Picture shown of actual unit. Now just need to build a sheet metal box more or less to cover it all. The Vintage air A/C unit sure is nice, no more cables doors etc.... that and its lighter than the stock set up also!
Used the nutsert kit again, drilled 2 holes inside to mount the bracket and bolted it in place, easy /peasy . I think I need a new nutsert set as the handle mechanisim seems to be all bent up. Quality offshore tools ya know! :bigthumb:

Today I made a metal box to accommodate the A\C that stick thru the firewall somewhat. Ill need to paint it, drill some holes to mount the AC box and the lines that will come thru. Then weld it in place . First time I've used a box-pan brake . If I can do it so can you!

I hear ya, I really wanted a 4 foot box pan brake but settled for this for the same reasons as you mentioned. Its been great so far , not all that expensive either .

Made my own. 3 deep in fan shrouds with it amongst other small brackets.
Dash piece as well just yesterday.
Next version of the top will be split to smaller segments.
Bottom support slides in and out to tuck it away easily.
Need to treat it nicer though.

Well, it must be Karma. I've tried to be a good boy lately. I ran across this on FB market. Got if for the princely sum of $10 American and a two hour round trip. It is a home made job but seems to be nicely done and heavy duty with 5/8" plate. 18" width capacity and should do 18ga without issue. I'll get it cleaned up a bit, add some hold downs and handles, and it will be in use this week. Big enough for what I need but I can put it on a shelf or in the corner when not in use.

Today was an amazing day weather wise. I had a few hours before family comes for thanksgiving dinner so.... I made up a few A/C lines. Went great, nice with all the right tools.

Good question, I'm not sure? :notsure:
I suspect a hyd line like a power steering line would have steel fittings as were A/C has aluminum so maybe this wouldn't be strong enough or the correct crimp?

Works great, no regrets buying it. Vintage air wants $579 USD for the same thing, much more than $100 difference. The one I got was $170 Canadian which is under $140 USD :bradsthumb:

As a mold(tool)maker by trade, I have a deep understanding of how tools get the jobs done.

Today is " Canada day" and I find it harder each year to scrape up some patriotism due to current government. It's been 3 years and counting since I've been " permitted" to see my family. So I dragged my butt out to the garage to take my mind off it all. Working on this car has been therapy for me a distraction from all the covid BS. Now that the Challenger is down for collision repairs the time was right to get back at it.
I haven't had time to do much till today. So far this year all I had done was swap out 1 shock/leaf spring plate and bolt in the rear shocks. Today I jacked up the rear and started on the exhaust. I got a few component's done. All in 308 Stainless mandrel bends. Chop saw, disc grinder and a welder, made in the driveway. If I can do it so can you!

We today was the "enough thinking, start cutting day" not guts no glory right? Instead of tunneling the exhaust like the original race car I chose to do this. I'm not going to use the rear seat. AMX should have been a 2 seater anyhow! LOL. I more or less deleted the rear foot well. I wanted the exhaust tucked up as far as possible without cutting into the rocker. I did trim off the lip on the rocker, I'll weld it back up another day. I also finished off the mufflers. I made some stainless hangers and welded them on the rear of the mufflers. At the front I made 4 bushings that the hanger rods slip into, I'll weld them when I get them adjusted how I wanted.

Over 30 years I have had Challenger and a Mustang. Would never consider to chop them up.
Since working on Falcon, I can cut and chop at will with zero trepidation.

I have had a few purist type comments in the AMC crowd though. LOL I like posting pictures to inspire others to build stuff. Really its not hard, you can do quite a bit with a disc grinder and a mig welder and other simple common hand tools. You are usually only limited by your imagination and confidence to try! What some would call fancy equipment , like a Bridgeport or a sheet metal brake really only make things quicker/easier, they can all be done by hand if one wanted to.

Exactly jump in with both feet and work your way out the other end.
I already have the Falcon sold. Figuring another couple months to finish and enjoy for a short bit. As much as I do like it. I gotta have less toys and Challenger remains top of that list.

No heat kinda "cools" my enthusiasm but managed to make these brackets and got the VDog gear box mounted. I reused the original steering box mounts , so it could always be simply unbolted and returned to stock if need be?

I haven't updated this in awhile. Things are progressing. I have finished the exhaust run all the fuel lines, brake lines. It was nice to finally get it down off the jackstands. (after a couple years I think?)
Today I finished off the A/C my mounting the dryer and making up the lines. I like that it will be hidden once I'm done . I also got the plugs and wires installed, as well as made power steering lines. So easy with stock car parts.... I also drilled the holes and bolted in the " Monte-Carlo" bar.
While under the car I noticed a soft spot in the front frame where it meets the floor. I kept the parts car front clip , so I cut it apart to see what was inside. They have a double welded arear there that traps moisture with no place to go. So it was a pretty quick job with the plasma cutter. I fitted in a new piece , welded it in then made a cap to go over it all . I doubt it will rust thru in my lifetime again. Some day I'll do the same to the other side so they look symmetrical but it was very solid and not necessary so I decided to leave it for another day. I'm trying to focus on getting it running, pretty stuff can wait till later.
I'm happy with how the exhaust turned out. I can't wait to fire it up and see how it sounds!
I also made brackets to mount the Audi console. It fits great!
Rewiring the whole car is next, not something I'm looking forward to as electrical is not my strong point.
I think this car has just as many Dodge parts on it as it does AMC now. I find I'm using up a lot of parts I've had hanging around for years!

Comin' along and lookin' good Brad! I was watching YouTube and there's a site called Coldwar Motors, that has nothing to do with war. They're a bunch of zanies in Alberta who're right into old cars and thrashing them back to life. Well worth a look- and when you do, look for the segment where they go over to one of their rich buddies who in addition to many other nice car, recently bought a 70 Mark Donohue edition at one of the big sales in the US and they give it a pretty good looking over. It's a beauty and I'm sure you'd love it. Keep on rockin' Brad, you're getting pretty close!
Your car is looking great. Is the plan to run your T/A against the Javelin in an SCCA-like rod course? That would be cool.

With the Challenger away at the paint shop I found myself with an empty garage for the first time in 27 years. Yesterday and today I puttered around and modified the hood for cowl induction. Plasma cutter came in handy! It made quick work of cutting out the opening for the stainless screening. Just used BBQ paint on the new aluminum insert I made. Cheap and easy!
