Change heater core steps

Hi, I took the car out for I little drive for the first time this year and before going to the inspection. Guest what ! After 5 min drive Preston start to drip from the heater box . Now I have to fix that before I can to the inspection.

Can somebody give me the steps to get the heater box out? Is It a big job?

What's parts I'm going to need other than the core?

A/C or non A/C car?

If it's non A/C it's a piece of cake. Couple of nuts in the engine compartment and one bracket inside and pull the whole box out. A/C car same thing but you have to disconnect the lines. Pop the clips off the box and it comes apart.

If your going to go through the trouble you might want to get a reseal and gasket kit from Detroit muscle it also has new foams for the blend doors great kit.

You will need to remove the glovebox & disconnet the wires & cables under dash as well

 I also recommend after draining the antifreeze to remove the passengers side seat and to get the carpet out of the way. Remove glovebox, disconnect cables from heater box door shafts, disconnect blower motor electrical plug, disconnect hoses, remove nuts from engine compartment side and remove heater box. Definitely get DMT gasket kit. Take lots of pictures during process so you know how it all goes together.

Gosh...the guy just wants to fix is leaky heater core not restore his whole car.

Step 1: Disconnect two heater hoses, turn them up high so they don't keep leaking.
Step 2: At the open vent side of the box you'll spot a 5/16 head bolt pointing up, that's a hook that holds the box to the upper cowl opening. Remove that bolt or loosen enough to reach inside and unhook the hook.
Step 3: In the engine compartment undo the three 7/16 nuts
Step 4: throw an old towel on the floor and give the box a yank, it will fall on the floor.
Step 5: Undo the two cables from the top now as well and unplug the electrical connection
Step 6: Undo the vent cable from the dash by the ashtray
Step 7: throw the box up on the bench.
Step 8: remove all the spring clips and split the box it two. don't forget the one screw holding the core by the tubes on the front side
Step 9: remove the four screws holding the heater core.
Step 10: (edit) Install the new heater core that you already bought from ROCKAUTO using our discount obviously.
Step 11: throw everything back together in the reverse order.
Should take less than an hour.

Now if you want the job to take three days you can remove things like glove boxes, seats, carpets, drain all the antifreeze, etc... you can buy the new DMT gasket kit and fully restore the heater box, lots of great help on here for that one...BUT if you're looking for a quick fix that gets you back on the road this afternoon....it doesn't have to be that big of a job.

True Alan. I did it once without removing the entire box from the car. Split the box by leaving it in the car. Never again. I'm not sure I can squeeze myself into those shapes anymore.  I think it took me longer to do it tha way than one hour.

It's a no ac car. Thank you all for the help.  Got the FItech Install today with a tank inc work goo. Now have to fix the heater.

Hi, I bought the heater core from rock auto, took the most expensive one thinking that the quality would be better.  Since Im really busy my dad did the job. He had to re weld the spacer plate between the inlet and outlets off the rad. She wasn't weld at the right place.

Some body  can tell me where the blower motor is grounded? We have no ground on the motor how? There is a brown wire from the motor to the heater box and them the box is suppose to be ground where?  Everything was working good before dad took it apart.

The blower motor grounds to the motor plate...you'll see and extra screw hole on top next to a mounting screw...

Yes thats thé brome wire but whats ground thé Motors plate to the body? For now I ran a wire from the plate to the body.
