Every convertible I've worked on until now has had the A01 light group which gave it a map light.
Today I'm working on one that came to me in a million pieces....The owner supplied a map light with no switch ? There's also a short harness that would tie the map light into the "dome light circuit" which would make sense turning that light on when the doors are open, however no being able to switch it on with a separate switch other than the interior dimmer switch. :dunno:

Can anybody confirm this is a possibility on a convertible without A01 ?

Interesting that you brought this up right now.  Over the weekend, I was replacing regular incandescent bulbs with LEDs on my Dart's dash.(which is sitting on a stand in my basement)  I was looking at the map light wiring as well as the dome light wiring and had a similar question.

I've got two yellow wires on the right side of the dash that are hanging down.  One definately goes to the right door switch.  The other wire is factory spliced and has both male and female connectors on it.  The only thing I could figure out is that the single dome light wire gets plugged into the dual plugged map light wire...then that wire connects to the door switch.(tying the two systems together)

I still don't completely have it figured out though.  It looks to me that you wouldn't be able to turn on the map light unless a door was open.  Maybe the map light has a secondary ground that I'm not seeing?

On the convertibles that you've worked on...Did the map light also turn on the rear interior lights?(or did it just turn on the map light)

Usually there is a switch next to the map light which controlled the map light. It did not control the other interior lights.

However this car has a short harness that plugs into the light with one yellow wire and one pink which makes me think it plugs into the "dome light circuit" ....On a Cuda up by the headlight switch is a panel dimmer switch which you can turn all the way one way to turn on the interior dome light, I think it this convertible that's how the map light is wired too :looney:

My old vert had that arraignment... No dome light so you get footwell lights...

anlauto

So you're saying it had a map light with no map light switch ?

Yup... Accept it's not really a map light, it's a footwell light.... There's no switch like a map light... :D

Is this for both 70 & 71 convertibles?
Barracuda & Challenger?

I imagine so, just checking.

So I guess you wouldn't be able to read a map then ? :crying:

On 71's I would think so but the only 71 vert I was involved with restoring was loaded with options & has a switched map light....

Alan, sadly no, you can't read maps with a footwell light....  Unless you wrap the map around your feet....  But thats true of the map light too.....

Back in the day, in the early 70's, a friend of mine had a 318 '70 Challenger with the map light your referring to. He had the gas station fold up maps in the glove box. When ever we would take his car places, since I always rode shotgun. Remember, "No Google" if we needed to find an address or a street, the maps would come out, he turned the dimmer switch all the way to the left, which turned on the dome light, whether the car was moving or not. His car did have A/C so on the passenger side, under the trim that covers all the A/C components was a map light. With the dimmer switch all the way to the left after the click there is a chrome toggle switch on the map light. You still had to layout the map at your feet to see it, or I could sit back in the seat and look at the map ( young eyes help here). I did this many times whenever we had to find out where we were going. I believe you could order the map light even if you had no A/C. Hope this helps.      Thanks,   Al

The map light was part of the "light group".  AFAIK, it couldn't be ordered by itself.  There were probably differences by year but in the "light group", you usually got...
map light
trunk light
fender mount turn signals(deleted in 70-72? with R/T hood)
ignition switch light
switch panel light
glove box light
ash tray light

I agree with your list Darren, but I think they might have put the light under the dash due to lack of a dome light  :dunno:

usually the convertibles received the 2 rear louvered seat panel lights instead of the dome light

Far as I can tell all verts got the rear footwell lights, but those do nothing for the front seats & the front seats are more likely to be occupied  so therefore are more in need of the light...  Which Chrysler did by adding a passenger front footwell light....
