May be wrong but my understanding was they were on the driver side only to protect all the wiring because it only ran on the driver side not passanger side. The passenger side does not have them and the carpet fits fine. Unless the passenger side had a build in hump to make up the slope??
It was only a year ago I was putting my T/A back together so should remember, but I don't (age catching up with me!), but I think there was a shield on my passenger side, and my antenna cable ran under it.  Also I should remember but I don't from when I put new carpet in my convertible, that the wiring for the right rear power window ran along the floor by the rocker and would need a shield to protect it?

I thought my 73 had shields on both sides.  I know my Dart does.(only the drivers side is used though)
