So I went to put my mini starter on and found out my starter hit the raised boss on the drivers side on my 392 Hemi. I will have to grind on the raised area just above the oil pan to get the starter to fit. I don't have a picture but didn't realize this was a issue when using a manual bell housing or 727 transmission. Just wanted to see if any of the starters fit without grinding on the engine block?

What mini-starter did you use?

I saw Roseville wants something like $300 for a hemi starter; I intended on using the tried and true "Dakota starter" found on all the 3.9, 5.2, and 5.9 magnum engines of the 90s and early 2000s.   I used my 10 year old stock dakota starter from the V6 and it had no problem cranking the 10.5:1 compression, 438 in 383 stroker that I built for the truck.

However, I have not bolted up a bell housing/flywheel yet to see if the Dakota starter would even work.   If it does, those things can be found in junkyards for $10, or remanufactured with a warranty period for around $75

Mini starter was bought off ebay. Here are some pictures of it.

Eh, I couldn't run that starter on my build because it would hit the headers.  Granted, I am running a Tremec magnum trans, but you may have the same issue.  I posted in my Hellcat engine swap thread the P/N that I used.  It's for a 2005 Ram with a 5.7 if I recall.  It requires far less block grinding as well.

P/N 56029274AA is what I used.  I bought a new aftermarket one for <$100 and it works perfect.

Thanks I will look it up. I'm running Hooker blackheart headers and the starter will clear them.

He did say it was a Gen III Hemi 392. Not an older LA or B/RB engine. The starter could also mounted on the passenger side on Gen III engines. They were mounted in 3 different locations depending on whether car or truck or year /model. as opposed to the drivers side on all earlier La and B/Rb engines, Old Torqueflite transmissions.
These came with a small starter to begin with.
Are you having a problem with the starter or is there more to the story.
Is this the stock engine ? What is it in ? Any engine mods ?
Generally when you change parts from the stock application you run into these types of issues. Sometimes you have to reclock them or make mods to fit like grinding an area or two.

Ya, I know he said gen 3 hemi.   But a lot of the time, starters are "universal".   That's why I was able to take a starter from a modern fuel injected magnum v6 and use it on a carbureted 1970s big block with no problem.    I can take a small block bell housing and 833 from a 340, and bolt it to a modern gen 3 hemi.   So it seems pretty reasonable to consider trying a 'non-typical' starter on the gen 3 hemi.

But, what do I know?

74-5.7

On my 5.7 A904 now A518 swap the 90s era mini starter like the one in the photos is what I used with no problem.
I used the crapy TTI mounts had to modify a bit. For Exhaust I just went with stock truck exhaust headers on the 5.7 and all stock suspension. For what it's worth
