So I come across a nice original 2 pice rotor and hub. That looks in excellent condition and almost 1 inch thick still.

We all know that the drum brakes had red painted on the front of them.

This has red paint on the front hub and looks like it was done then a wheel was attached shortly after.

I'm wondering if the factory still painted the hubs on disc brake cars red or did someone decide to paint it red at some point. Neither makes any sense because it's not seen after the wheel is attached.

Or was a factory worker so use to painting red on the brakes and just painted it because.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Trying to decide if I want to reapply the red paint after I get it cleaned up.

Perhaps a prior owner did this for self entertainment purposes?  I'd be interested in any details revealed after you clean it.  I cleaned the one in the pics below with 20% vinegar rather then mechanical stripping methods. No paint found on the hub surface.

I don't know what aesthetic Chrysler would achieve by painting that part of the rotor.  It's not visible in any way once the rim is mounted.  I suspect that was done by a previous owner.

Yea I agree I don't see Chrysler wasting the money on this but also why a previous owner would do it either because it's not seen.
Just thought I would put this out there in case anyone else has seen it.

It's why I threw out there maybe some worker was so use to slapping paint on the drums just did it to the disc hub who will ever know.

judging from the paint pattern, it looks like rally rims were installed and painted red on the car, and its the over spray we now see on the hub.  when the brake drums were painted at the factory, i believe it was done before the wheels were installed.

Rallye wheels would not have those openings for the paint to go thru, in fact very few wheels would.

I initially had the same thought but now suspect the areas without paint may be where the wheel touched the hub and rubbed off the paint?

Yea and the way the paint is around the wheel studs. To me it looks like the paint was wet when the wheel was applied. Like they did on the drums.

Hard to know just thought I would post it and see if anyone else has seen anything like it on an original car before.
