Trying to figure out on my 1970 challenger 318 console shift what the lock out tube should prevent. I have rebuilt column and lock out tube is locking but I can still put car in reverse and neutral. Not sure if this is how it should work or not. Thanks.

The main purpose of the lock-out tube on a 1970 floor shifted automatic is to lock the STEERING when the car is in park. If the linkage is all in place, you should not be able to pull the shifter out of park either unless the key has been turned first, I believe.

Yeah that's what I think too. It's like the rod is too short, I have adjusted as far as I can and the shifter still can move to reverse with steering locked. Maybe I have something else out of adjustment or my lock out tube isn't locking in the right position. I've messed with it for hours and can't figure out what I'm missing.

Yeah me too. It's driving me crazy I can't figure it out. Maybe my lock out tube isn't locking out in the right position. I rebuilt it watching the cuda Cody videos and everything seemed to work just like it should. Thanks for the reply.

I included a picture and think this linkage should be straight and is causing the rest of the lock out linkage to be too short. I cant find if this linkage should be straight or shaped like a"z".

YES, that one piece of linkage is NOT at all correct :alan2cents:

This is a 1970 automatic piece. This one is column auto, so it's different on the "flat end" but they are the same length.

I have no idea how it got bent that way. I bought the car 4 years ago and refinished all the parts that came and I guess it was like this. I'm going to straighten it out and tig weld up the tiny cracks, paint it and install. Thanks for the help guys.

Setup looks like this.
