Lock out tube

Do you need the LOT or can it be removed and left out upon reassembly. What I want to do is install a bearing at the end of the steering column tube and the LOT is in the way.

You're working on a 1970 column, right?  Why do you want leave the tube out?  If you don't want it to lock leave the mech inside the column out so it never locks.  Much easier and it will still look stock from the outside.
