Power steering has this horrible creaking noise when cold. Basically when I start it and turn out of the garage at low speed. When driving it goes away, when warm it goes away. The pump is the original 73 power steering pump off my 318. Fluid level is correct, belt is tight. What's the culprit?

Also, they make conditioners for PS fluid that might temporary stop the issue?   :notsure:

Does it just need a simple rebuild?

That's what I was thinking also. Is there how to or any details anywhere? Never done it before

You can get a seal kit from your local parts store.  Pretty simple really.  The hardest part is removing the reservoir without bending it all up.  You'll need a press(or a friend with a press) to install the new shaft bushing.  Being a 73 pump, it should have a "keyed" pulley and a nut on it.  If it's a pressed pulley, I'd replace the pump/pulley.  I'd try a bottle of additive first.  :alan2cents:

So it's more of a creak than a whine? So maybe the bushing going out? I've never had that happen but it sure could. It sounds like a pump rebuild is in order all right. Usually leakage is the problem.
