Steering column has in and out play at the steering coupler so planning to rebuild it with the DMT steering coupler rebuild kit.

Is there anything that should or should not be done while doing this project?
I'm thinking would be a good time to pull steering gear and do Firm Feel 3 upgrade.

Planning to replace the Federal pump with Saginaw.

Recently removed AC system and the probable bracket pully system requires Saginaw.

What wears out, the shoes, or is it play in the pin causing the in out slop in the column?

The kit you posted also comes with the upper steering column bearing and a special coupler retainer.  You can get just the coupler rebuild kit at your local dealer much cheaper.  IF you need those extra parts that fine.

Not sure what issues will be found when opening it all up, or what I tear up , rather have the parts than need to get them after.

If you are rebuilding your entire steering column that's fine.  But if you are just rebuilding your coupler, the upper bearing doesn't even come into play.  It's at the opposite end of the column.

I don't think anything actually wears out or at least the dozen or so that I have done. The grease gets hard as a rock but it doesn't really move a lot.

I strongly recommend you review Cody's 4 part series on steering column rebuilds/etc at https://www.e-bodies.org/videos/.  It's well done and should answer any questions you have.  :bigthumb:

Yes, watched briefly , but definitely will watch when I start the work.

I can pull the steering wheel in and out from the dash a good bit so definitely play somewhere,

The column is collapsible as a safety feature and held together with plastic shear pins.  Yours could have sheared causing the movement in the column you describe.

anlauto

I disagree, what he's describing would be impossible with just a shear pin problem. I would say the outer snap-ring on top of the bearing is not in it's groove properly. :alan2cents:

I vote for the snap ring as well. That bearing is 50 years old too, so the new one will be a good addition.

Hope to work on it soon to find out where the slop is and repair, @anlauto that snap ring sounds reasonable .
Thanks all for the info and help.
