The normal sized breather should fit with the shaker.  It is a close fit, but there is clearance.

You may need to tweak the position of the bellcrank and/or add an extra gasket or two to the carb throat.

I am also wondering if Fram (with their amazing quality control at the time - remember how this outer baseplate had no shaker nuts tackwelded on?) welded the bellcrank bracket in the wrong spot?

Steve, Yes the normal breather works. It is close but you need to make sure you have the correct carb gasket. I used a NOS gasket.
Also you need the correct 70 base plate because the 70 and 71 base plates are different. If you are using a 71 it will sit lower on carb
Hope this helps
Bob

You can check the position of bell crank which is welded on where the 2 dimples are to line it up.
I had one baseplate had the feet on wrong also.

It has the correct 1970 baseplate. (the prior owner went through quite a search to find one and even traded an NOS 71 plate for it).

Steve,
I am sure James had the correct one, just do yourself a favor and check the throat measurement. I can get that later if you need it.
I think there is about a 1/4 inch difference between the two

Steve
Here are the measurements.
Here also is the location of the bellcrank spot weld from the Fram print.
I doubt your original adapter ring had the bellcrank spot welded in the wrong location since as mentioned, on an original there were two dimples to line up for spot welding.
Last photo top picture shows original location bellcrank is on the adapter ring.
Bottom picture shows a reproduction adapter ring with bellcrank in wrong position.
Watch out for that on some of the earlier reproduction adapter rings.

Hi Terry you beat me too it. Notice the 1/4 inch difference between the 70 and 71 base plate
It all is correct I get my finger in between the bell crank and breather

Yup, its at least 1-3/4 tall and the bellcrank is in the right dimpled spots. (excuse the duct tape, it's hold the rubber seal on while it "learns the curve" of the adapter ring.

OK, sounds good. If the bell crank is still hitting the breather, just bend the bell crank out away from the carb a small amount. It will give you more clearance.

njsteve

I just ordered a new breather from Roseville. We will see how it all fits once it arrives.

njsteve

The new oil breather arrived, and I painted it, and all is good. I think some of the problem was an optical illusion from the "shorter" breather that actually sat taller on it's mounting tube. So here's the result: one specifically calibrated, index finger width of clearance.
