I made the mistake of looking on youtube for suggestions on an entry level gun.. two hours later my head was spinning to the point where I may just go to harbor freight and get the next gun up from purple gun and buy a purple for primer.

I hoped to find a decent gun for both base and clear ~$250 range.

Is there a simple choice?  maybe a kit with pressure regular and tips sizes.

Home projects:
1st  my son's Honda Si  fender and rubber bumper
2nd my daughters 67 dart entire car.

Thanks !

I have been using a Devillbis "Finishline (their lower line) gun for quite some time with terrific results. I also have a Devillbis Tekna Copper, but is twice your price range.

Believe it or not the Harbor Freight Black Widow is getting rave reviews in my FB custom paint group & is well within your price range. They also have a coupon from time to time for it!

Being the fact I can't seem to throw anything away, I still have a Binks #7 with an agitating cup from the early 80's when I started painting for laquer  & a Sharpe 775 from the same time period for Enamel as well!  :))

I painted my last 3 cars with the Eastwood Concourse gun. Very happy with the results. I do wonder what the $800.00 guns do differently. I'm assuming it would lay the clear down better and get less orange peel .

For a few bucks you can get an adapter for the "Black Widow" gun from HF to use the disposable cups system from the more expensive units. I "believe" they care use some of the same replacements parts too, which has always been a problem with the cheaper HF guns people use a couple of times and toss in the trash. I'll be paying attention though since eventually I'll be in the same boat.

See if you can find a used SATA 3000-jet, I love mine.  :perfect10:

I also have  SATA. and loved it when I painted 20 years ago.
Now sure how good it would be with today's paints.

@js27  Is yours an HVLP, gravity or siphon feed?

thanks all!

Looked on HF,  Great reviews on the Black widow HTE.

Some reviewer say design close to sata

question can I shoot base with 1.3 tip ?

They sell  HTE model for clear and HVLP for primer

Yes.

I also bought the Devillbis "Finishline from Eastwood.  Granted I haven't painted any cars with it but have painted numerous parts for my 'Cuda along with the rubber front bumper for my sons car.  Very happy with it.

I guess these are two solid choices for $200; FLG-4 or BW HTE

I would be afraid to buy a used Sata too many knockoffs to start with.

There was no mention of air compressor size here.  You're going to get poor results with a top quality spray gun if you don't have the air to feed it.   HVLP works great with the large two stage compressors.  If you have a small 20 gallon compressor, it may not be able to meet the demands.  In which case you might look at a LVLP gun.  Uses much less air but still has the transfer efficiency.  Look at the Devilbiss GFG-670 its a bit more than $250.  There may be knockoffs of this out there for a lower price.  Check into Astro Pnuematic.

Yes on the adapters & the disposable cups system. I bought the Dekups system. However after some research I will be buying the PPS style adapter, because my paint company (Tamco) sells the disposable cups, lids, etc for about a 3rd of the price of the big guys!

By the way....Anyone who paints needs to check out Tamco Paints. Their prices are amazing & the quality of their products are much better than the major manufacturers.  Example : the Dupont high solids clear is approx 36% solids while Tamcos' is 54% @ less than half the price.
