I want to put on bumperettes to cover the holes in the rear valance on my 73 Challenger. I want to make sure it hasn't been converted to an earlier style bumper.

I don't know why it post the picture upside-down but I think you can get the jist of what I'm talking about. :dunno:

Edit: it looks like it fix itself the right way up?

Thanks Cody

from the picture it appears you still have the stock '73 style extended brackets & fillers attached to the car/bumper

I believe the bumperettes are the same, they have a longer lower mounting bracket to get to the mounting point on the frame rail

got a picture of the hole pattern on your existing bumper

Get rid of those filler strips and move the bumper in farther.  :alan2cents:  If the fillers are in decent shape, you might be able to sell them to someone who is doing a stock restoration.

 :iagree:
use the 72 brackets & pull the bumpers in flush

Thanks all!!

I think I'm going like it is the car has been freshly painted so I think I'll leave it like it is for now.

So I take in doing so I'll have use the 73, 74 bumperettes right?

Here are some more pictures if that helps

Valkman, I tossed my bumperettes and had the holes filled in the valance. No that hard to do for somebody with body work skills. It looks good. I can get a pic if you want to see.

That's great I would like to see that. I'm not much of a body man, and the car a fresh coat of paint  (I bought it that way) so for now I think it would be easier to just mounted the bumperettes. Maybe do that in the future  :bigthumb:

So just to be clear if I leave the bumper the way it is as pictured,  I can or cannot use a 70-72 bumperette!

You can use 70-72 bumper guards, they'll just stick out a little further  :alan2cents:

I would love to see a picture of those installed on a 73

I have a 74 Challenger.   I installed 70-72 bumper guards on it to cover the valance holes.   To do so, I had to drill a new hole in the bumper and fill in the original big ugly bumper guard hole above it with a bumper bolt.   To drill the hole, I Put a bolt in the bumper guard and then grease on the bolt end and had it touch the bumper where it goes on.   Then drilled the hole thru the middle of the grease on a slight upward angle.   I used an all thread bolt and put it thru the bumper and then a nut on it.

I didn't bother with the lower bolt as i didn't have the bracket, but, it holds tight enough with just the one bolt.

Here is a pic

Oh, and no i didn't do the older brackets to move the bumper in tighter...   Without the big overrunning bumper guards, I think it looks pretty good as is.   The gap between the guards and the valence holes is only about 3/4 of an inch and isnt really noticeable unless you look for it, and I can spend the $135 for 70-72 bumper brackets for something else.  There is always something else.   Plus the filler strips help to make sure that the new paint doesn't get scratched.

Can anyone tell me if this is a 73 bumper,  or is the earlier style?
