What Does the Backside of a Factory Quarter Panel Look Like?

Pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but would like to get some feedback from others as I think I've just made several interesting discoveries about the car that I've owned for the last 35 years.

When looking from the interior through the access for the quarter window mechanisms, would you expect the back of the quarter panel to have sound deadener applied and have some body color overspray similar to the adjacent unibody structure, or would it be gray primer with no overspray or sound deadener?

To me, the top photo (passenger side) looks like a factory quarter and the bottom photo (driver's side) looks like it has been replaced.  If that is correct, the "interesting" part of the discovery is this.

I always assumed that the driver's side quarter was original because when I bought the car in 1988 both quarters were fairly rotted out.  The car was originally FY1 yellow, but had been repainted green and the paint was in really poor shape by 1988, so I assumed the car had been repainted sometime in the late 70s or early 80s.  The driver's side quarter has the original color yellow paint under the green, so it must have been replaced prior to the green repaint.  Did anyone actually go to the trouble to replace quarter panels on 383 cars in the 70s?  I thought that cars requiring that degree of work just went to the crusher?

The strange thing about the passenger side looking factory is that I had a body shop install a Year One quarter panel skin on that side in like 1989 or 1990.  I always assumed that the original quarter panel was cut off and the new skin welded on.  However, the top photo and some other evidence seems to indicate that they just applied the new quarter panel skin over the top of the original quarter panel. OK, so apparently haven't generated a whole lot of chatter on this thread. :Thud:

Can I at least get someone to confirm that the factory quarter would have received sound deadener in the pocket behind the quarter glass hardware, like is shown in the first photo?  Thanks

I just looked at my dealer promo and the undercoating/sound deadener looks like the pictures you posted. It goes from the rear, minus a couple inches all the way to the door jamb and again, just short of the jamb. Hope this helps and there is over spray the full inner side.

Give me a couple hours and I will drag out the original quarter from the driver side on my 70 challenger and post a picture. I also have the passenger side but the area in question took about a 2 inch intrusion on a T-bone hit at some point in time and had been replaced but stay tuned and I'll get back to this...

Thanks @PLY474 and @Jocigar for the responses!  Jocigar, the link you provided is very helpful.

@7E-Bodies, hopefully all is well and you just got sidetracked with life.  If you haven't already pulled out your old quarter, I think I'm good at this point.  But I certainly appreciate the offer to go out of your way.

 gents!

73 Challenger OEM.
My 70 Challenger had badly replaced quarters and no treatment inside them.

@DeathProofCuda I actually went and dug them out fairly quickly, THEN got sidetracked and forgot to respond  :sorry: It appears they had been patched clear up to the body line decades ago. I know they'd been patched, but just not that far. Sorry to be of no help.
