A66 code 1970 340 Challengers

I thought all 1970 340 Challengers' were A66 code, here's my convertible's fender tag.....




Then I saw a red 340 Challenger convertible at the Nat's and looking at the car saw a few things I thought were not right for A66... until I looked at the tag. This is not an A66 car:
Is this unusual, -  clearly I was wrong in thinking all 1970 340 Challengers were A66 code cars?

Most likely a reproduction tag I guess  :dunno:

And yup repo tag...  Probably started life as a brown car..

I've no idea.... I have known the car for over 25 years and it has always been there.

I guess the red tag may be a repro... but i wonder? it is a very late build car.
The tag on my green A66 is defineitely original.

All 1970 340 Challengers were A66 cars.
There were very early 340 Challengers that may not have had the A66 code?

The 340 A66 package was offered starting in September, 1969 w the 340 engine, 15" rallye wheels, RT hood, bumble stripe and collapsable spare. 

It was a late decision to offer the formal A66 package; hence the early A66 cars came with 340 decals on the hood rather then the metal call outs which were not ready for the newly offered package.

Some of the very early 340 cars came with flat hoods (August/early September) and may not have had the A66 code. Not sure when they started demarcating A66?.  :thinking:

per the '70 Dodge "salesman's pocket guide" 9/23/69 version:
CODE A66 - Challenger 340 CID engine package - $258.90
NA Special Edition (29), NA R/T (JS)
15" Rallye wheels (W21) - required at EXTRA cost
collapsable spare (W34) - required at EXTRA cost

this changed at some point - as the following shows

per the '70 Dodge "dealership data book" no date found
CODE A66 - Challenger 340 CID engine package - includes
340 engine - E55
F70-14 RWL tires - T87
R/T hood
H.D. brakes
H.D. suspension
"bumble bee" stripe
"scat pack" decals
wheel lip mouldings "DELETED"

7/23/69:
The 340 Performance Package (A66) will be available on the hardtop and convertible models in conjunction with the 340 engine in early September. The 340 engine will only be available in combination with the 340 Performance Package.

10/20/69:
Effective immediately, F70x14-inch RWL tires (T87) are standard with the 340 Performance Package. The E60x15-inch tires (U82) will be optional at extra cost. The Collapsible Spare (W34) and Rallye Wheels will no longer be required with the 340 Package. A Rear Spoiler in Dull Black (J81) will be available in early November. Effective immediately, Performance Axle Packages A31 and A36 are available with the 340 Package.

The June 10th date code on the red tag is very late. Tag seems odd.  The 1971 340 Challengers no longer carried the A66 code. May be the late production has something to do with the absence of the code?

I thought I would show my A66 340 here..
This car has all original sheet metal and has never had any rust or dents. The paint was original when I bought the car but really needed a repaint.
(I've changed the tyres since this photo)

The red one does look like a reproduction tag.  @6bblgt  might have some thoughts on it.

I'm a rank amature compared to most on this forum but yes, that red fender tag is almost surely a reproduction. Way too crisp! @Jim W ..... That is a beautiful car. :bradsthumb:  :banana:

I agree very crisp letters alway make me take a closer look and yet I've seen originals that were equally crisp....

the 340 Challenger was a LATE addition to the 1970 Dodge line-up, the earliest car I know of is 6+ weeks into production (mid-September) - & all 340 Challengers for 1970 are "A66 package cars"
