Uggg sorry to see this. I lost a cam ( timing gear) in my Buick 455 so I know the feeling. I did end up tearing it down to clean everything.

Sorry man: I wish I was there, I would give you a hand with it. You caught it right away which is good. 30 years ago I caught one in my Hemi the same way. I didn't know better so I drained the oil, changed the cam, broke it in, drained it again and ran for tons of miles. These days though I wouldn't chance it. I would tear it down, blow everything out and replace anything iffy.

Yeah. Not really.  In took it for a 5 mile spin before I caught it!  I thought I heard it while tuning in the driveway idling away...went for a spin and it got much worse!!!

If it were mine, I'd slosh a few quarts of varsol through it with the pan plug out first and add the magnets as per TC's suggestion and make the repair. I've seen lots of engines- usually 305 Chevys, that wore right off, a couple of lobes and that's what the lads did and it seemed to be ok, not perfect, but ok. What're you going to do about the cam? Canada Crank and Chrome can regrind cams if it's not too bad and it's just the one, it may be a cost effective option. I know you bought a Lunati, but if it's any help, I've got a brand new-in the box Comp XE268 with new lifters that I bought for my 360 before I went roller and I'd make you a hell of a deal should you consider it. Just FYI and man, I can't tell you how I hoped that it was just a bad lifter that ticked. That really sucks.  :bye:

I had a bad feeling , Sorry Jason

Why it happens is simple , the cam gets Zero direct oil all it has is splash from the crank & run down from the heads only , You have to get the engine up to 2500 RPM immediately & keep it there to keep enough oil on the cam anything else & the cam starves for oil & the break in lube only lasts a short time .

The engine will be fine , I would pull the oil pan , replace the oil pump , you can check a few brgs while the pan is off but if you were using a Wix filter my bet is the brgs are fine if they were ok before the cam replacement , if not you can swap in new brgs , If the filter caught the minimal debris the rest of the oil system will be clean , you can always put in some oil & prelube the system into a new filter thn replace the oil & filter again before firing it up again
