You want an oil with higher Zinc levels for flat tappet cams , Diesel [Rotella] & agricultural oils have more zinc really you want SJ rated oil if you can find it , you might at a farm store SL is OK also , SN is not good . If there is a lot of gunk inside the engine it can plug the oil pick up , I just fixed one this weekend where the oil had never bben changed & there was no oil pressure , the pick up was gummed up solid .

I peaked inside the valve covers, seems nice and clean there, the clogged up engines I have seen usually has a lot of gunk there also.

Thanks guys for all the good advice!
When I bought it I did not count on the engine being OK, but since it ran fine it would be cool to drive it this summer.
If not, I can always get another running small block pretty cheap here.

Or, I have 2 Gen3 Hemis in the garage...

Gonna save this one though because it's the original engine.

Ha, ha: The gas tank thing made me chuckle. Keep your eye on the water pump weep hole. It's very common for the seal to dry up and leak if the car hasn't been used alot or the water drained.

At least the 4 bolts at the ends of the pump go into the coolant passages , , the 2 at the bottom go into the oil / timing cover & the top ones is dry

The weep hole is central to the shaft on the bottom. Works as a forewarning to major pump failure. When bearings start to go bad the lateral movement will damage the front seal. (Or old seal dries out). When this happens the water pump will start leaking past seal. Hence the drip. I have seen bad pumps fans break loose and launch into the radiator. This is not typical as the leak becomes a giveaway warning.
"Weep" hole is to alleviate pressure from the sealed cavity where bearing and seal are pressed in during pump assembly. Added bonus is the early warning it provides.

OK, I did a compression test, 10-10,5 on all cylinders, seems good.
I ran it warm for about 10 minutes with the thin 10 oil and a new filter, drained it and it looks OK I think, what do you guys think of the color?
Looks all black in the black pan but you see the color on the other picture. No grey in it, just a little bit dirty.

Then changed the filter again and filled with 15W-40 mineral oil, gonna run that while driving for a while and keep an eye on the color.
But I can't drive it right now, no wheels and no brakes. Thats next.

Water leak stopped now but I have a new pump coming anyways, it was cheap so I might as well change it.

Looks OK to me just k=make sure you have zinc additive or SL oil in there

Great! This is a zinc additive available here, I'll get some of that.

The picture of the Rislone bottle you posted does not say ZDDP or ZINC on it anywhere. You need something that has that in it.

It said zinc in the description, but not on the bottle. I'll check if they have those you posted. Thanks!
