Cam selection

Stock 383 with an edelbrock manifold and carb. Still have stock exhaust manifolds. No power brakes, 4 speed and 3.55's in the rear. Called Hughes for a cam choice and they suggested this

Want a good streetable cam to just wake up the motor...don't need to balance a glass on the air cleaner, but it needs to idle in traffic if needed. Looking for thoughts on what they suggested.

I like Mr. Six Pack cams.  He does a great job of balancing a good running / idling cam with some good performance.

Have a question since I don't have it apart yet...do I have a 1 bolt or a 3 bolt cam?

A new chain and new lifters are a no brainer.....just wondering about the number of bolts on the stock cam

If it's stock it will more than likely be a 1 bolt. I agree with CP on using a 3 bolt set up.  Since your ordering a cam,  chain and gear set you can do whatever you want.

I agree with Cody, I have two cams from Mr. Six Pack and very happy with the results.

I think the cam Hughes suggested would work great for your combo based on the specs, BUT there is a cheaper alternative.

SUM-K6401 cam and lifter kit is VERY close to the Hughe's cam specs. Except, it comes with lifters, its U.S. made, its $47 cheaper, and shipping is FREE. (I've used this cam myself.)

The intake closing ABDC isn't listed on Summit's site, but from my cam card it says 41 degrees (the Hughes is 40 degrees). So, it makes good dynamic compression in medium and low compression iron headed big blocks. If your 383 is truly stock, you might find that 9.5:1 compression rating is actually 9.0:1 or less when measured, which is right in the sweet spot for the Hughes cam and Summit cam.

About 8:1 dynamic compression is considered safe for iron heads, or so I've read.

I have found that the 383's deck height is all over the place which will dramatically effect compression. That's one of the main reasons some 383's are screamers and some are just flat out pigs. You can usually track it right down to the compression issue and if you put the wrong cam in a low compression 383 and you will not be happy.

From a lot of personal experience I can tell you the Lunatis make power & respond well

I would like to know more about your combo before recommending a specific cam such as gear ratio in the diff , od trans or not , you want to be into the powerband @ highway cruising speed
either of these should work well as you have the 4 spd & std brakes so comnverter stall & manifold vacuum are less of a concern
