Getting engine area ready for paint. My cuda is an early build dec 69 car so this area is blacked out . My Question is if I restore it to the way it is now the inside area pictured is black correct ??  NOW if I was to paint the fj5 colour on the top of the cowl Would this mean that the inside was body colour OR black ? Hope you can follow my Question  :australia:

The cowl blackout goes on AFTER the color coat so just spray the color like you would normally and get those interior areas with a good amount of paint/overspray.
Next, paint the cowl blackout and let the overspray get in those same interior areas. Make sure you do not mask the front of the cowl at the vertical edge of the firewall. You can keep it looking correct as long as you do not have a hard masking line from black to color. There is a lot of variation where the black stops and the color starts.
Here are some examples of original cars.

I forgot to mention that Trans Am cars were done completely different so do not look at examples of T/A and AAR cowls. They had the cowl painted black first and then the color was applied.
After the run of Trans Am cars concluded in late-April of 1970, no cars got the cowl blackout. My Cuda has an SPD of June `70 so no blackout.

This is an interesting topic that has been discussed on here a few times. My May 1970 SPD Challenger FC7 built at Hamtramck doesn't have the cowl blackout either. Also, I believe only certain colors ever got the blackout treatment. Same as the front end blackout. Black, dark blue, dark green didn't get the front end blackout.

It seems like the OPs question is related to what is down inside the cowl area, where the wiper motor/arms are.
If so, that area was not given much attention at the factory. Basically overspray from what I have seen.
So, there would be body color, but not well applied.
And as the other comments state, the black applied afterwards was not directed into that area, but also oversprayed.

Our EW1 (1972) was not blacked out on the cowl or inside where the wiper links are.  All body color except for the plastic screens which were black.

Cowl blackout went away after the first nine months of 1970 E-Body production. August `69 - April `70 have it, May - July `70 do not.

Ok, thanks.
