Front Bearing Retainer Question

Tonight I learned the hard way that my 4 spd transmission has the large bearing retainer on it so it won't bolt up to my 340 bellhousing with the small retainer opening. 

My question is can I swap the large retainer on the transmission to  small one? Or do I need a whole new transmission case?

If you opt to bore the pilot hole, there is not much meat for the pivot bolts.
I did this one to run an 18 spline.
