Loctite has a great thread sealer for those situations, I use it a lot.

Man, you're just having all kinds of bad luck with that head.   :(

No kidding. I have bad luck in general.

Its not bad luck, its gaining experience.

I agree, don't go oversize if you don't have to, it only complicates things...  Tap it clear into the water jacket, double ended stud & sealer of your choice...My choice would be   https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0030MTX5I?tag=vs-auto-insert-amazon-20

I used Permatex Aviation on my heavy truck high pressure diesel fuel lines and oil lines. Great stuff. No more teflon here.

If what I've done doesn't work, that's going to be the next thing I try.

Fair enough. I've drilled and tapped holes before, helicoiled them...just not on anything this expensive. I have to keep reminding myself that there's no telling how many shade tree mechanics have been into this motor.

Chryco Psycho

Going to water it is better to use a Timesert rather than a helicoil

rebelyell

Makes sense. I used an 8mm SHCS and teflon tape. Should hold up, but I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Good to hear you got it fixed.   I just hate the days when if not for bad luck I would have no luck at all.  :pullinghair:

I remember changing out a water pump on a V6 Mercury Capri.
9 bolts, 2 of which are 1/2 inch longer.
Put the longer bolt back in, in the wrong hole, and cracked
the front aluminum engine casing.  $400 in 1977
was a lot of money!

Don't go jinxing me now, I have been on a winning streak lately. LOL

Chryco Psycho

Not trying to jinx anyone , just personally cannot remember a time where everything is not going wrong as fast as I can fix it , this AM I topped up a battery as the water level was low , fire it up & it is exploding the caps off of the battery .... WTH   :notsure:
If bad things happen in 3s I feel blessed when it is limited to 3 / day , I am working on my second set of 3 bad decades .  :Thud:
Good luck is just a myth ....

I just have awful, awful, luck. Anyway, the freeze plug didn't hold up. I'm going fill up the whole opening with gasket maker. if that doesn't work them I'm going to have to change the freeze plug.  :crying:

Even if it works for now, it will start to leak at the most inconvenient time (just ask Murphy), change the plug, it's easy.

Chryco Psycho

I agree but which freeze plug , you may have to pull the head to change it  :notsure:
