Hi Guys,

I'm looking for a new aluminum intake for my shaker 1970 Challenger.  As some of you may have seen it's been painted the new Plum Crazy and looks great.  I've converted it from the original flat hood to a shaker.  I'm running a mildly modified 340.  It's my understanding that the 340 sits a little lower in the engine bay than the 440?  I'm using a new Edelbrock Thunder series carb.

I'm looking for an intake that will fit under the shaker and not be too tall.  I know a lot of you say use an original intake but I don't want to do that it's heavier and I would just like a new one.  Below is what I'm looking to get does anyone have any experience and know if these intakes will fit correctly? Lower is obviously better since I can use spacers.  Just looking for the right purchase the first time.  Thanks for all of your advise

Welcome @Daveh    :welcome:  Great to see you here!  Hoping @Chryco Psycho will chime in here.  :fingerscrossed:

Sorry I don't have any good suggestions, but maybe I could talk you in to posting a few photos of your Challenger?   :please:

Hi Cody,

I hope you are well.  I'm really surprised that there isn't more info on this topic. It's like crickets out there no one knows.  Maybe someone here will have an idea.

Here are some pics.

Love the videos by the way.

WOW!  That's looking really good!  Going to be a super sweet ride when you get it done!

Hoping Neil will know a little about the 340 shaker intakes.  I think the 340 Shaker is the most rare.  :notsure:  Lots of people do Hemi & 440 Shakers, but not many 340's?

Wow, that's going to be a sweet ride when done.  Sorry, but I don't know the answer to your question but I know there are 2 different shaker base heights that may allow you more intake height.  The different isn't much, but could be just enough.  Good luck. :bradsthumb:

This is a carb off a 71 340 Cuda.  It might give you some idea of the height needed to fit the carb.

Carb height will not change , Carter & Holley seemed to use the same std height as is used today as well .
I would measure a stock intake from the end rail to carb flange to get a baseline height & go from there , one of the best intakes for the 340 was the LD340 & this should be good height for the shaker   , the factory intake was also a very good intke but heavy but for a number of years it was reproduced in alum but has been replaed with the Eddy rpm through Mopar now which is taller , the air gap is much taller & is a no go .

@Daveh   I was hoping Chryco Psycho would chime in.

Do not go with the Mopar M1 intake as she is very tall.

She is beautiful but tall. heh

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the response.  As I said I would use the LD34 in a heartbeat but the PO removed the center plenum.  Changing it from a dual plane to a single plane.  I was worried that would change the performance band from the low end and go to the top end on mildly build 340.  What are your opinions on that?  If you say I won't notice a difference then I won't make the change.  Take at the look at the pics above of the LD340.  Thanks guys.

Sorry they weren't in this post here they are.

If it's already installed on the engine, then run it and see how you like it.  It's a really good intake and you might love the way it works.  Plus that gives you a starting point to test your shaker set up and hood.  If it doesn't fit or you don't like the intake, you'll have a good starting point.   :alan2cents:

No it's not installed yet.  I'm not going to install it until after the engine is in the car.  Makes no sense to install it out of the car only to have to remove it if it's the wrong height.  This way I can test fit it a little better.

Why not weld or JB weld a new divider? :notsure:
I wouldn't fully weld just tack weld and then seal.
