Need that Overdrive, I guess Gear Vendors is the Winner

I've been researching the best route to get that final overdrive with my 4 speed Hemi Cuda clone.  I'd love to bolt the Passon 5 speed right in and wouldn't mind paying the 5-6K price.  We all know that it's just not going to happen with the backlog and uncertainty.

The Passon OD 4 speed is just not what I want - having that nice RPM transition all the way is why I love 5 speed overdrives.

The other kits, well I'm not going to cut up my nice underbody painted Barracuda.

Gear Vendors seems to be the winner.  The cost, 3K and the minimal mods (some tunnel dimpling - which I hope to make look pretty, make the the GV unit very attractive.

why not use a A500 (42rh) or 518 (46RH)???

Both are OD autos, will fit with out cutting up your floor, and a hell of a lot less then 3k.

Rich G.

You got to take pictures and tell us what's involved with the installation and what trans you used.

@Rich G.   yep...the thread is thre.  I will summarize everything into a nice celan thread with some more pics in the next few weeks, once I have some real world experience to report.  Still have one issue to work out.

After years of planning on a 5-speed tremec swap on my auto I'm considering a 518.  One question you may be able to answer, I added the part throttle kickdown on my 727 years ago and love that.  Did that become a standard thing on 518?  or optional?

Thanks

Part throttle kick down is standard...  Just something to consider... A518 vs A500... The A518 is a little beefier but the A500 can easily by built to handle 500HP and has a few advantages...  It's a little smaller than the A518 which is nice but more importantly it has better gear ratios than the A518.....

                    A500             A518
1st Gear        2.74               2.45
2nd Gear       1.54               1.45
Drive             1.00               1.00
O/D                .69                 .69

That may not seem like a big deal butttttt...... Add the rear axle ratio & it means something

First gear with an A500 and 3.55 gear equals 9.727
First gear with an A518 and 3.55 gear equals 8.697
First gear with an A518 and 3.91 gear equals 9.579

So first gear is deeper but at highway speed a 3.55 is equal to a 2.45....

Plus the A500 has considerably less parasitic drag than the A518...

Just something to consider.... If you have big HP yeah go A518 but if not........

Wow...talk about thread mis-direction....I think Mops is looking to stay with a manual transmission behind his HEMI  :burnout:

We are hijacking this thread but I like the information on the 500, and the 2.74 low gear.  I'm under 400hp with my 360, at least at mile high.  Argh!

I have installed a few GV OD units , indestructable , I believe you will be happy with it , you could check with Dan / 3030 Mopar he had a number inline for the 855

I was not aware that you could mate a Gear Vendors to a manual trans.

learn something new everyday.

That would be a good thread showing the conversion and videos.

Sorry for the late reply to my OP.  Yes, I have the A833 manual and need that extra gear.  The write ups on this forum did help convince me to go this route.  I will take pics but I will not be doing it myself.  Just can't get under the car for too long and still go to work the next day without too much pain.

Playing football for 22 yrs straight is taking its toll.  Hopefully, I'll avoid the brain stuff - now where did I put my keys, or car for that matter?  LOL!

Chryco Psycho

Well I would be happy to do it for you but the airport is closed & I will not take any vaccines while I am still breathing  :dunno:
