Thanks for taking such good care of us Cody!   :worship:

If your backups are scheduled on top of each other (one snapshot does not finish before the next starts) you will get resource locks and contention.   They should be able to detect that.  If it was running fine before the move to a new VM host then they certainly can move it back.

Just make sure they do not have you on the same cluster as some porn site  :soshelp:

Good point XeGnome.  I have been running the same scheduled backups at different times so they do just as you said... not overlap.  The large one starts at 11:45pm at night the others run right after each other at 5:30pm.  In the past they only take about 20 to 30 minutes.  Now they are taking so many hours they are over lapping.  So I'm running them manually right now once I know the first one is done so they do not over lap.

Cody,
You said you do full backups nightly? Maybe I'm not understanding correctly but most folks to a full backup weekly or biweekly and do incremental backups in between full backups.

This way you only take a longer hit for a full backup once a week or possibly twice a month.the incremental backups would be fairly quick as they are only that day's deltas.

We have the server set to back up the full site each night.  The site is still at a size that it was only taking about 30 minutes to complete a full backup (until they moved us).  Once we grow to a size that it no longer backs up fast I will have to back off to once or twice a week.  Right now the last full backup took 12 hours for a site that was at 19.54 gigs.  The transfer rate was 200kb/sec.  Back in the 90's the decent 3.5" floppies could transfer at 500kb/sec.  It's half as slow as a 1990's floppy disc.   :Thud:

We think it has to do with a PHP script and the ZIP process because it only slows down while it's trying to zip the backup.

Ouch, losing to a floppy disk is not good.

Looks like you are throttled on the cpu side and hence why it's taking so long (PHP & ZIP). Compression alone can peg a CPU.

Weird issues going on again so I logged out, then back in and noticed a post from last night is gone. :notsure:

:Thud:  That's news to me about any post being removed or lost.  Do you know what post it was?  I wonder if the original poster removed it?

I purchased a 2nd server in Washington DC and have been running tests on it.  All the test pass with flying colors.  It's WAY faster then what we are on now in LA.  I've got more leg work to do before we make the decision to move hosting containers, but looks like we are going to have to do it.  I will let everyone know before we make the move just in case the site is down while they move us.

Thank you everyone for being understanding while I work through this.

Cody, every site I've even spent time on has had issues that lead to some down time & frustration.... It's how it's dealt with (or not) that determines whether members continue to participate..... I'd have to say your more proactive than any forum owner I've ever had the pleasure to interact with..... Thank You!!!
